The suite itself isn't so bad but it's not as luxurious as they describe themselves to be. The lobby has a nice modern touch, complete with a pool, jaccuzi, and a gym (6am-10pm), but don't expect much else. There's no room service since it's a suite, so I'm not dinging them on that. There's a washer and dryer, dishwasher, utensils/dishes, fridge, toaster, and an electric kettle. The floors were not clean and despite it being a smoke free hotel, I can see a cigarette burn on the carpeted area clear as day. I would not walk bare feet in any hotel anyway, but this one in particular, I'd bleach my feet if I inadvertently touched it. I just get a sense that it's not cleaned well so the icky feeling was hard to rub off. I legit boiled water and tried to sanitize as much surface area as I could. It's a short walk to the office, but other than that, there really weren't any perks for me. I'll be here another week so I'm not thrilled about my Sydney leg of the trip. Can't wait to go back home.

What's changed is the neighborhood... The central business district used to be well located for site seeing but pretty dead atmosphere wise. Just corporate buildings and workers. Quiet at night and silent on the weekends. Now, it's an amazing hub of activity with residents, coffee shops, restaurant, bars, shops and more plus the corporate buildings. The main drag, George Street, is now pedestrian only and relaxing to walk along. We look forward to returning again somehow, some way, in the future! We already agreed Mantra 2 on Bond Street will be our destination again! Furnishings felt a couple of decades dated, and the thin carpet lumped up in places. (We found a lone dead cockroach on the rug.) We felt compelled to wear flip-flops on it. And our windows on the 11th floor were sealed shut, couldn't even crack them a few inches for fresh air; we were hermetically sealed in. Bare-bones amenities -- the bathroom had liquid soap, shampoo and conditioner, and a hair dryer; but no body lotion, q-tips or cotton balls. The "kitchenette" turned out to be a large-ish closet with a few dishes, silverware, and glassware, a teapot and pod coffee maker with an assortment of teabags and a few coffee pods; but only a sink and TEEEEENY refrigerator that couldn't hold much more than last night's restaurant doggie bag stored on its side. I'd called the hotel ahead of our visit and was assured there would be a cooktop in the kitchenette, so I brought groceries for hot breakfasts and to cook chicken/burgers for picnic sandwiches -- but not only wasn't there a cooktop or oven, there wasn't even a microwave to reheat leftovers; and we couldn't cram half our bag of groceries in the micro-fridge. That p*ssed me off, a pointless lie that wasted money on the raw meat and veggies I'd brought along to cook. Minimal amenities here too -- no dish sponge, tea towels, paper towels, or dish soap, and no minibar snack offerings. (We specifically chose this place because of the kitchenette; we would have chosen a nicer place elsewhere for the same price if we'd known we couldn't actually cook or even reheat anything here.) The upside was, I wasn't remotely tempted to stay in and nurse the horrific headcold I'd caught -- the "meh" space pushed me to get out and do walking tours and see the city, balloon-head be damned. (I actually think just a standard room would be more agreeable -- no understocked and un-appointed kitchenette to disappoint, and less space to notice the lack of decor filling it.) Very nice front desk manager, and "Spice Alley" assortment of nice restaurants only a block away. The hotel would be handy for an overnight stop headed in or out of town; but not what you'd call a destination hotel.

I say "quick' "check in" because we were out of there pretty quick. The front desk staff seemed friendly enough at check in, but when we went to the room we found a total shocker. Complete filth. Trash left in the room, dust and dirt griming ever surface. The desk chair had a huge round impression in the seat and everything was rusted over. I booked the hotel through Reservations.com and am perplexed at how this place has the positive ratings and reviews. My only logical understanding is that the majority of positive reviews of this place are made up by staff and/or totally fraudulent. After checking into a disgusting room, we immediately went downstairs to ask to cancel our reservation, as we found the hallways and entire spaces we were in to just be extremely dirty. The front desk staff was courteous, understanding, and seemed to express that this happens quite often, as though it's no big deal. Here's where the bigger head ache came in. Hotels.com refused to refund the entire amount, so I am out nearly $200 because of a hotelier's decision to run a filthy operation. We had a five-night stay booked, totaling more than $700, however since we didn't give 24 hours' notice that we didn't want to stay at a trashy and filthy hotel, that we'd have to forfeit one night's stay rate. Un-freaking-believable. Reservations.com and this hotel should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage of tourists the way they do, presenting illegitimate and unverified reviews. This hotel has a great location, but as they say, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

This was my first time to Australia so I knew nothing about the area but upon doing some research it looked like it was centrally located to many venues and the airport via public trans and also within walking distance. First off, I don't consider this hotel luxurious by any means, and I don't mean that in a bad way; however, it is very comfortable! I would compare it to a Marriott Residence Inn here in the US. It was very clean and spacious with amazing views! Staff was always very personable, friendly, efficient, and accommodating to our needs. Location is awesome because it is within walking distance to both the Museum Station and Town Hall train stations as well as several bus stations. As a matter of fact, we did do quite a bit of walking as well rather than taking public trans for exercising and it took the same amount of time in certain instances (like rush hour) to get to the same place(s). As for most accommodations, nothing is without its faults. I could not get the dishwasher to work and I thought it was just user error; come to find out, it is backed up with water inside. I phoned the front desk in the morning prior to leaving for the day and when we returned it still wasn't fixed so I called again and they sent someone to fix it, which they did quickly. They informed us that they do not provide housekeeping services but if we needed anything to just ask, and ask we did! They also sent someone daily during the last couple of days during our stay to empty the trash and provide us with clean towels and other necessities (without asking). They are very conservative with toiletries and any other standard necessities such as soap, shampoo, dish soap, toilet paper, etc.. as a matter of fact, they do not provide paper towels and they also were hard to find at any local stores, so it must be the way they are, which is fine, just wasn't used to that here in the states (we also had to ask for coffee daily unless we went out and made a run ourselves to a coffee shop). Bed was comfortable; however, I did notice towards the end of our stay while making it that the mattress topper was stained and I knew that wasn't from me! I called the front desk to let them know and they had someone bring a new freshly washed mattress topper. They also provide laundry service as well as washers and dryers in every unit which was convenient and thoughtful as I took advantage and did laundry every day. They also provide laundry detergent (but no softener) which comes in a little tube and is probably just enough for a small load so I ended up buying a small box at one of the local grocery stores so I didn't have to keep asking. While we had no issues with the HVAC system in our unit, we noticed the hallways had either no AC or they did not turn it on as well as part of the lobbyway. It was a little uncomfortable especially waiting for an elevator (they dub it a "lift"). Speaking of the "lift", wait times could be long depending on how busy it was & generally early mornings were the best with no waiting. I did feel secure, however, as you are only allowed to the 15th fl where the gym is located, the lobby, and the floor that your unit is located. As for the cost, it is considered pricey by Australian standards; however, given the exchange rate per USD it was substantially cheaper and a great value for the money & this was a high floor unit (48th fl)! If I return to Australia someday (which I hope I will, it is a great country) I'd definitely stay in a Meriton Suites again!

Also, a lot of places around the hotel stays open late and walking around is safe. The reason I'm giving three stars is because of the service I got and the slow ass elevators. I arrived at 8am and the room wasn't ready, which was expected. I asked if I could borrow a key to access the gym so I can shower to freshen up for a meeting in a couple hours. The front desk said they can but they would charge me extra, which is absurd because the Meriton on Pitt St. nearby offered to let me use the gym to shower for free when I was in Sydney a couple months ago. The only reason I even asked about the gym access was because Pitt St. offered it to me so I thought it was an option since I'm a guest. This and even the Pitt St. location has slow elevators that it takes forever to go up and come down. This location has more elevators than Pitt, but still slow as hell. Their elevator operating system is really inefficient. Overall, I'd still come back because of the apartment style, room has a washing machine, and location. Wish they could just improve on what I mentioned.

It looks quite small but it is so large. The rooms are delightful and very comfortable. My daughter was coming down from the central Coast when she lost control of her car in the rain. She had to stay in Sydney as she had no way of getting back that night. I phoned and made a booking, they were so helpful and even though they were busy, they found a room from my daughter and her partner at 9pm at night. We celebrated my sister-in-law's 60th birthday at the hotel. The food was great, every course a winner. We had wonderful service, the staff were terrific. Now I go to the Spa at the hotel. It's in a separate building, right next to the swimming pool and it is really rather luxurious. They offer all sorts of things like body wraps and stone massages . The only problem is getting through to them. They don't have a separate receptionist so you have to leave a message. However, if you want to spoil yourself or a friend, there's nothing better.

They were incredibly friendly, helpful and polite. One gentleman was always chipper, whistling and hustling which made me smile every time I saw him. He always remembered my name and greeted me warmly. Conversely, the front desk staff were cold, stiff, pre-occupied and inattentive. The room was on the smaller size, but had a nice view of the city. Through the concrete jungle, you could see where the harbour area was without actually seeing the harbour. It seemed as if the fixtures and bathroom could use some updating and redecorating. It seems like free wifi just isn't something common in Sydney, and this hotel was no exception. Limited wifi access is available at a fee. In the lobby area codes for a small increment of free wifi time are available but you practically have to hold a gun to the front desk staff to get one. I loved the location. Everything was really within walking distance. Darling Harbour, QVC, Chinatown, the Rocks and Circular Quay seemed like just a hop, skip and a jump. After being in the city for just a day or two, we quickly realized how small the city and easily navigable the city was. If we return to Sydney, most likely we will stay elsewhere.
