I just returned home after a two week stay in Lubbock for work with my orchestra. Lubbock has…read morenever been an easy place for me to fit in, on the whole I've found the people there to be fairly closed off, and my stays for orchestra have over the years given me some very isolated, lonely weeks. Thanks to Crossfit Lubbock, I have discovered truly welcoming people, and I'm so grateful for the outlet and excellent coaching there. I found out about them while working out in Midland at David's old gym, Crossfit FMS. A lady one day said I should check out the new digs up in Lubbock, as I was headed there, and I did, even having established drop ins at another box in town for the previous couple of years. The facility is wonderful, spacious and fully equipped. They keep things clean and run some great programming. They are obviously doing things right as they sent a team to the Games last summer as a very new gym, but they don't leave out the "little guy." They make sure that all athletes, from beginner to advanced, get a solid workout and constructive feedback. I was able to work out there 10 times during my stay, and they even made sure I got judged for my Open 16.2 workout. The people finished with their wod came over to cheer me on in the final, agonizing minutes of attempting my last cleans when I was just totally gassed. What a great feeling to have relative strangers backing you all the way to the end. I particularly enjoy their "weakness Wednesday" routine, which is a 20 minute EMOM calling all participating athletes to choose two weaknesses to alternate during even/odd minutes. How awesome. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. I focused both my Wednesdays on pull strict pull ups and handstand push ups, and my HSPU kipping is vastly improved in just that short time. One of the advanced athletes gave me some breakthrough tips on double unders, totally unsolicited. It was so wonderful that she took the time to share the things that worked for her. I think the culture David and Steven are cultivating out there captures some of the best elements of the crossfit community. There is no drama, no bull, no looking down at those of us who still work with heavily scaled skills, just good, hard workouts and a genuine effort to give everyone a chance to improve their skills and reach past their comfort zones in a supportive environment. I can't wait for the final week of concerts of the 2015-1016 LSO season so I can work out there again.
