Had a pretty underwhelming experience here. On a a grocery run last weekend we suddenly got hungry and in the mood for some snacks. So we decided to try out the cafe inside indu grocery store. We ordered the samosa chaat for having it there and were super excited. They have a good seating area for folks who want to have their food and even the ambiance was pretty good. The food came out very quickly and was fresh. However the lady at checkout seemed annoyed and was kind of rude. She was dismissive of me when i asked if the order would come to the table or if i need to come to the counter to pick it up. She pretty much said "just go and have your seat" in an extremely rude tone. Hopefully it was just a bad day for her and the service in general is better than this. Food wise, it was 50-50 as well. The samose chaat did not have enough samosa in jt. It was mainly yogurt and chickpea which although important, not nearly as much as samosa. I discovered this Gem when it opened, much smaller than it is now, and they have added the restaurant. I don't know that I have had Punjabi food before. Always liked Indian, but I LOVE this place. (4.5 stars) Tucked into the Market-facing side of FantaCity, Indu offers a treasure trove of spices, rices, frozen meals, and more. Like Carniceria El Mercadito down the street, it also offers a small food counter and limited seating that belie the quality of the offerings. For our first visit, my wife and I split two vegetarian thalis with naan and samosas. The thalis allowed us to sample two kinds of lentils, paneer, aloo, and more. While most had a thinner-than-average consistency, the flavors were on-point. An accompanying spicy relish (those are peppers, not green beans!) let us crank up the heat to our heart's content. Service proved to be patient and accommodating as we tried to work our way through the surprisingly varied menu. This isn't sit-down entrée fare, but there were plenty of snacks, drinks, sides, breads, and parathas to choose from. The pricing, for the quantity offered, is unbeatable. Two thalis, two samosas and naan fed two hungry adults and yielded leftovers for under $20, and one person can eat well here for under $10. If you want quick, cheap, flavorful eats, can do without meat, and don't mind taking your food to go (seating, as mentioned, is very limited, and there isn't much ambiance to speak of), Indu is definitely worth a visit. So this is a double review: 1) The restaurant - where else can you get so many great Indian vegetarian items for an incredibly low price? The food is fast, fresh, and delicious. The Indian Pizza fuses Indian toppings (vegetarian) on a delicious pizza crust! The samosas are amazing 2) The supermarket: Wow - nearly all fresh and frozen Indian favorites - vegetarian, vegan, and meat! So many great items to choose from and a very friendly and helpful staff. Well, I fixed our first totally vegetarian Indian meal, almost all of which came from items purchased here, and most were selected with the help of the fine folks who run this store. The fare included my first Uttappam, a Zucchini & Sweet Corn Stir Fry, A Cucumber & Tomato Salad, Rajma, our own Riata, Coconut Chutney, and Tomato Chutney. All in all, this was a nice meal, a nice change. The Uttappam came out well, though a bit "mealy", but it was prepared from a mix, and I think making it from scratch next time will be my choice, but for a first time effort, I was not displeased with the result. This version included slice tomato, sliced onion, chopped green chili peppers, and chopped Curry Leaves. Liked it overall, but I'll work some dead animal into the next meal - probably lamb or goat, something with feathers removed, or such! This review is about the restaurant within the store. The menu is mostly Punjabi cuisine and very authentic. The aloo and Gobi parathas are my favorite! 2 parathas are served per plate and they're quite filling. They comes with butter, pickle, and curd. Yummm! I usually get a salty lassi or sugar cane juice to go along with it. Just thinking about it has me drooling for some right now.. Haha! The Chaat here is pretty good too especially the chole bhature and samosa Chaat. The rajma chawal is an authentic Punjabi dish too. They serve it separately on the same place (not mixed) and with some pickles and onion. They are very accommodating and the service is great too. Came out to try Indus famous chaat. I heard so much about it. When I walked in the store was packed and there was people standing in the door way so I had to squeeze my self in. I ordered a samosa chaat to go, I didn't really want to sit in the rush and eat. The samosa chat cost about $6.50 and was 2 crushed samosas and a cup of garbanzos with yogurt and green sauce. It was ok after taking a couple spoons I felt something funny in my mouth and it was like a piece of plastic a 1/2 strip, at first I thought it was the garbanzos or the samosas but I couldn't swallow so I spit it out and it was a strip of plastic I honestly could not eat anymore after almost swallowing this thing. I ended up throwing the rest away and I felt like something was in my throat for the next hour, but I made it. Over all the customer service was great the lady taking the orders was very sweet and nice, I just got a good feeling when she spoke to me. The service was quick!! I don't think I'll be back to have any of the food, samosa chaat etc. The food, I give it 0 stars and 3 stars for the wonderful service. read more

The Tadka Daal is rather good and the rice just fabulous (urghhh, keeps me coming back). Unlike the sugar cane juice, the mint lassi lacks taste. I discovered this gem and I was glad I did. I almost always make sure that I get the samosa, I like my samosa cold, for me it taste better when I eat it a few hours after it's made. It is a street food in its country of origin (south east Asia). This takes the vegetarian route which means that the dominating fillings are potatoes. However it's the dipping sauce that really elevates the taste of this, for me I prefer the dark colored one. They provide you with two, the other being the mint chutney I believe. The way I judge samosas is by their taste and oh my the ones here do a very good job, I would say that it taste a lot better then the ones in south east Asia. read more

This Indian store is vast and has everything you could possibly need for Indian cooking, including spices, flours, dals, rice, pickles, chutneys, frozen items, and even fresh vegetables; the fresh okra I buy here is better than okra from a supermarket! Aside from essential Indian ingredients, Indu Convenient Store also has cooking equipment, DVDs, CDs, religious memorabilia (Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, etc.), and even jewelry. We stop by here almost every time we pass through Greensboro. The big draw for us in extremely cheap fresh vegetables in season. For example, all last summer okra was an amazing 19 cents a pound! Great prices on eggplants, tomatoes, cilantro, and a wide selection of specialty veggies that are popular for Indian home cooking. In winter the prices rise, as they should. [Update: as of summer 2016 they no longer have cheap produce. Okra for example is $2.99 a pound, more than 15 times the price last summer]. The store has a great variety of spices, snacks, and the other typical products you find in an Indian store. We have some great Indian stores in Durham, but this is one of our favorites in the state! There's a fairly new vegetarian Punjabi restaurant inside, which is very convenient for a tasty and inexpensive bite to eat while you're there. I just wish they offered more vegetable dishes, using the fresh ingredients available in the store. read more

They used to be overpriced but good. Now the management changed (from what I have heard, to Nepali ownership). Everything has gone downhill. There are no Kerala puffs, Kerala Porotta, wheat porotta, Anand brand Kerala mixture, banana chips, Grandma pickles, etc. It's a shame because those were some of the best foods available. I understand it's what the clientele want but the demographics haven't changed much until then. Also, the vegetables are often old. South Indian food is a lot better than North Indian or Nepali food, even for my friends who are not South Indians. First went to Indu years ago for some paneer and naan. I didn't even notice the restaurant until reading about it in Triad City Beat. I ended up taking home enough food for six people for about $34. I've tried almost every Indian restaurant in Greensboro and this is probably the best. Very friendly service, especially if you feel uncomfortable trying to pronounce some of the things on the menu. There is a wonderful selection of sweets for dessert just a few feet away in the convenience store portion of the shop. Highly recommend for vegetarians and all interested in Indian food. read more

Fantastic variety of goods in this Indian grocery store. Great prices for the produce. We were excited to see a small fast food restaurant inside. Food is homey. However, we bought paranthas to-go and at home, we discovered long hair in one of the paranthas. Would encourage all cooks to wear hair nets, including on beards. We asked for less spicy food, which the server mentioned was available. However, they are unable to cater to different spice levels because they make their gravy-based items and daals all at once in the morning. Would not recommend the vegetable chow mein. read more
