My perception is that once our inspector set the foot in our door he had already decided that there is no mold in this home. Our condo is new and clean, I did not look super sick so I almost felt like I had to justify myself why I'm worried about mold. Like what are my symptoms, could it be from something else? Could the mycotoxins found in my urine be from food instead? Those were questions I was asked by the inspector before the inspection even started. Once I told him about the water leakage in our bathroom, he missed the still wet spot. He didn't rule there might mold behind the ceiling but overall didn't seem very concerned. We later cut out the drywall and found mold on the other side of the drywall and in the insulation. We mostly had this inspection done to confirm and gain deeper knowledge on what we already knew. I might be wrong but my impression is that if I wouldn't have had all this knowledge already - past water leak in the bathroom and still partially wet, elevated mycotoxin levels in urine - and let's say we had just the mold inspection done to rule out mold as the root cause of some of my health issues, the inspection would have come back with no findings. And I would have moved on missing the root cause of my issues. read more

I exchanged some emails and phone calls with Scott about some air quality problems in my home related to the installation of a new HVAC about a year ago. Symptoms included chemical (VOC) smells and various respiratory issues (coughing, snoring, dry and bloody noses) whenever we ran the system. Scott recommended a VOC test that I could perform and send back to him for analysis. When I mentioned I'd already done this via another firm, he kindly offered to look over the report and share his opinion at no cost. He pointed out that the location of the test was not ideal for diagnosing the issue. I wish the other firm had provided better guidance on this. Scott appears to be a much deeper expert than the other air quality diagnostic "experts" I've interacted with this past year. We had a water leak from the upstairs apartment and needed to know if there was any mold growth in the wall, so we hired Indoor Science as they were referred to us​. I just had a mold inspection and mold testing performed by indoor science. I am a landlord and felt the company did a very thorough and professional job. The inspector they sent took a couple air samples inside the unit and a control sample outside and sent to a lab to receive certified results. They also did an extensive inspection in the unit, visually looking at all aspects within the unit that could contribute to any moisture/mold issues and also did moisture readings throughout. The report they sent with their findings was also thorough. As well, the personnel I spoke with in on the phone and sent to the home was courteous and professional. I also appreciated that they were certified inspectors. As a landlord I was also relieved that they did not create a report that made it seem like were some major mold or moisture issues that did not exist in order to try and sell some expensive mold remediation service or construction repair work that was not needed. We moved into a new construction apartment that we did not expect to have water damage. After two months of living there we learned that the water would leak into the apartment into the walls. We then saw mold growing all over the sliding door and surrounding base boards/framing. We contacted the landlord and indoor science. Indoor science came by and found mold sample on the air and surface sample. We then let the landlord know that indoor science recommended a hole to be drilled into the drywall to confirm. Ian from indoor science came back, placed a hole in the crown molding, which we would later find was not going to reveal anything. He verified that no mold was found. Fast forward to a year later and the same issues persisted. A new tenant moved into the floor below us, and opened up his drywall which was covered in black mold. our apartment also had the same issue as the water was leaking from the roof of the building from our floor and below to the other apartments. Ian and Indoor sciences error gave us a false sense that no mold was in the walls. They were wrong, because they didn't know where to drill. Or were told not to as they stopped communicating with me as they told me my landlord was now there client, even though I called them and paid them both times they came out! I could not believe what they did. I called them after the black mold discovery, and only asked that they helped verify that mold existed for. They would not because there lawyers advised them not to, after I let them know I was not trying to sue them, just to get help with having the landlord pay for our move etc, since he knew the water damage was there before he rented it. I would not recommend Indoor Science if your serious about getting to the root of your problem. BE CAREFUL as BLACK MOLD is a serious issue. read more

Scott with Indoor Science did a great job evaluating my suspected mold issue in my finished attic. He took thermal scans, moisture scans, three air samples, looked behind the walls for suspicious areas (we have access doors), and very kindly and thoroughly answered all of my questions as I tagged along. The lab samples will come back in a month and I feel completely confident that they will provide unbiased, reliable data that I can use to better understand what is going on in my house. As a bonus, they use Square, so I was able to pay for it on a card, which was great. 10/25/17 edit: I incorrectly stated the report would take a month. I was very excited to use Indoor Science as my Mold Inspector after I was able to get the OK from my Landlord. I was having concerns for my health as well as the current state of my basement. My landlord said I could choose the service and he would pay. While researching different services in the Chicago area and after reading the top notch reviews and doing my own research on Indoor Science, I knew they were the service I wanted to use. My Landlord set up an appointment with Indoor Science for August 17th at 9:30am. Jordan was our inspector, he was very polite and did not mind us staying with him while he went through the inspection and talking us through it. Our unit is a Duplex that has had its fair share of Flooding during the summer with a carpeted environment having little to no ventilation, high humidity, and a lot of moisture. There are two bedrooms down there (one of them being mine) I experienced flooding in my room, our hallway, and sewage outburst coming from laundry room that is connected right next to my room into the basement. Also, a patch of yellow mold that started growing in our living area in the basement opposite to the areas effected by flooding. Jordan had his infrared camera and was scanning the floor with it. He also was monitoring areas to check for high moisture. Once it was time for air samples he explained it would be best to set the tripod up in the places with the highest moisture. This air sample had a run time of 5 minutes while it was collecting data of the environment. Jordan asked standard questions of our living space and my roommate Ania and I answered to the best of out knowledge. Jordan acknowledged "white fuzz" growing on our white brick walls, he mentioned it was an indicator of hight moisture and was not harmful. Some of our immediate concerns were the yellow mold growing on our carpet, I had initially cut the piece of carpeting out with concern to my health. Unfortunately it grew right back in the same exact spot! Jordan was not sure if he could determine the growth as mold. It is now been over three weeks and it has drastically spread. We were also concerned with the yellow starting to appear on our brick walls. We were unable to determine a correct answer to that. Jordan stated the indoor inspection was complete and needed to do the exterior of the building. Ania and I thanked him for coming and providing us with the information during the inspection. He let us know the report would be out the following week and would be emailed to us. He also said we could obtain the report by calling Indoor Science. It has been over three weeks and I have still not be able to obtain a report, nor been able to get in touch with Jordan. I have called Indoor Science 3 times now since August 17. Two of those calls were with the receptionist explaining my situation and leaving my contact info for Jordan. I was told I would be given a response back via email or call. Neither of which happened. I called again about a week apart and was told a note would be left on his desk. At this point I had followed up with my Landlord who mentioned he could not get in touch with Jordan either, said the situation is minor and he would get a carpet cleaning in place. My third time calling Indoor Science I asked to speak with Ian, he had given me some helpful information while I was still researching a service to use and sought out his help again. After I told him my situation he asked for my address and saw my Landlord's information - he told me a report was sent to my Landlord on August 24th. I was able to give Ian another email of my Landlords just to make sure, and he said he would send out the report again. Ian helped me understand that since my landlord is technically "The Client" I do not have access to this information. I understood Ian and also understand Indoor Science should not be the middle man between the Landlord and Tenant. I only wish that was more clearer when I was told I could call the office to obtain a copy. Overall, my experience with Indoor Science has left me feeling unsecured - I understand there are a lot of factors in my experience but it would have been nice to receive a call back. We had a great experience with Indoor Science, which was professional and confidence-inspiring from the get-go. Some context: we live in an older downtown high-rise and had been sick on and off for more than a month. We were starting to wonder if something in the building air was making us sick and our management office was slow to respond to our concerns. So we took matters into our own hands and contacted Indoor Science. Dylan took our initial call and walked me step-by-step through the assessments that made sense for us and they quickly scheduled our appointment for later that week. Scott showed up right on time and got to work, investigating our air quality and checking moisture on several measures in each room. He explained everything in detail to us and pointed out some areas where we should clean more carefully to be sure to prevent mold. Luckily, it ended up our air quality was generally very good, but there was some discrepancy between the number of small particles in a few rooms, which he identified as being due to the dirty dusty vents (which have probably never been cleaned ever in the history of the building, I'm guessing) and the presence of an air purifier in one room (the one with less particles). He recommended we give the vents a thorough cleaning, have our building install new filters in the fan units, and possibly get an additional air purifier. After doing all that, we have noticed a markedly better feel in our breathing air. Well worth the cost of the assessment, both for our own peace of mind and better air going forward! True to their website, at no point was there any pressure to pay for more testing that we didn't need. These guys know their stuff and they're happy to share their knowledge. I contacted Indoor Science to help me identify what might be causing a persistent air quality issue in my kitchen to which I've been having allergy symptoms (e.g. runny nose, headaches, rashes). There was no accompanying odor and the symptoms were isolated to a very small area of my home, so I had become very frustrated trying to pinpoint the cause. I decided to call Indoor Science after reviewing their website, which explains very well what kind of services they offer. If you think you may require the services of a company like Indoor Science, definitely spend some time on their extremely informative website. When I first called, Ian talked with me on the phone for a half hour or so to get an overview of the situation and then scheduled an appointment for a home inspection the following week. He arrived right on time and tested for every type of issue that the average person might have an allergic reaction to (e.g. mold, methane, carbon monoxide, VOCs, etc.). He brought a wide range of equipment and was very thorough, explaining everything he was doing along the way. I was very comfortable having him work in my home. Through a process of elimination, we concluded that some construction materials recently used above my kitchen window were the most likely culprit. While we weren't able to pinpoint the specific chemical or pollutant I was reacting to, we were able to determine many things that were NOT causing the issue, which has saved me thousands of dollars in unnecessary testing. One thing I was concerned about when I made the appointment was that the costs would spiral out of control. However, aside from very specific lab testing (which we deemed unnecessary based on the initial results), everything was covered by Ian's consulting fee of $195 an hour, and the time estimate he gave me for the service (approx 2 hours) was right on target. I also received a comprehensive report of the test results for no additional charge beyond what I had paid for the house call. I feel this is a very good value considering that a test just for mold costs between $400 and $500, and he tested for a wide range of agents, including mold. In terms of a solution, I asked if there was some type of air cleaner I should invest in, and he told me that really the best option is to keep my window open whenever possible until the materials dry out, which can take weeks or even a few months. This is basically how I was already managing the situation but I was glad to have confirmation that there's nothing else I need to be doing, at least for now. I certainly appreciated his pragmatic approach and was grateful that he didn't recommend all kind of expensive interventions that he didn't think would be effective. All of that being, said, if the "dry-out" time frame ends and the issue still persists, I will at least be way ahead of the game in terms of having ruled out any acutely dangerous causes, which was truly worth every penny I invested in this testing. Based on their comprehensive approach, reasonable pricing, and high level of customer service, I really don't think you can go wrong engaging Indoor Science for any air quality testing needs you may have! read more

During a home inspection as a part of of trying to sell my condo, mold was found in two different areas. As a result, the sale fell through and I needed to get the issue addressed. Before doing so I wanted more thorough testing done of the entire condo to ensure there weren't other problem areas. I researched several firms and decided on Indoor Science. I am very happy with that decision. Dylan came to my condo and walked me through the testing he was going to do. He took air and surface samples. He was able to confirm that the two spots identified by the home inspector were mold. The air test concluded that there was not an elevated mold count indoors which was a relief. The final report he sent me was both thorough and easy to follow. It also contained recommendations to address the mold found as a part of the surface samples conducted. Edit to add: this company attempted to get my review taken down citing "privacy concerns". They were unsuccessful. I appealed and it was put back up because everything is accurate and truthful- it just reflects poorly on their business practices. I have a mold problem in my apartment. I asked my leasing company to get a lab-certified mold test done. They chose this company. I assume they have an outstanding contract with them. And in order to keep this contract, they do as the leasing company asks within probably "legal" limits. The test was conducted on July 25th and I didn't receive the completed report until August 9th. The report was 4 pages, with the first two being pictures and a few short paragraphs. The last two pages was just a chart with the scientific names of the mold and the levels found. I don't know if they would do a more thorough report if I had contracted them directly but I can't imagine they'd be in business if they didn't. How am I, as a consumer, supposed to know what an appropriate level of mold is? There was absolutely no further explanation other than a string of scientific names followed by a bunch of arbitrary numbers. When I reached out to them directly, I received a pretty immediate email in response from Jordan Thomas. He said he would contact me the next day to further explain the results. He never did. I emailed him in the middle of the day. I tracked the email and saw he opened it but never responded. I called the office towards the end of the business day asking for him and he was "out on assignment". I spoke with his colleague and he wouldn't give me any further information on my results. When I tried communicating that there was no way the results would make any sense to anyone not in the industry he said that since my leasing company was the one they had a business relationship, their allegiance was to them. They had no interest or financial gain in making sure that I understood the results of the test. This told me exactly what I had suspected. The report was purposely vague and lacked important detail for a reason. To give me less of a pull with my leasing company with a mold problem they refuse to acknowledge. I asked for a more detailed report and Jordan's colleague said it had already been sent. It hadn't. He put me on hold to speak with Jordan and then came back saying Jordan hadn't finished it and would send it over. Shortly after our phone call a report was sent over with about 3 more sentences and a remedy to the problem (something that the leasing company has obviously told them to include). I'm STILL not clear on what the report is actually supposed to convey. If Jordan was "out on assignment" how did he get report over to me so quickly? He clearly just didn't want to speak with me directly. That's fine. I wouldn't want to speak me either. Listen guys. I'm no dummy. Your thinly-veiled attempts to pull a fast one on me weren't successful. When you couldn't forge the results of the test, you included as little information as you could get away with. When I asked for more detail, you dodged my requests and then gave me a half-assed second report to shut me up. Maybe next time don't outright confirm that's your motive, k? But as long as you keep your contract with my leasing company you're all good, eh? You do you, but when I need something in the future, I will never use your slimy services. read more

The Good, the Bad, the Ugly: The Good: Ian showed up as promised and worked with my schedule. He was very thorough in helping me determine where the mold may have originated from. The Bad: got some recommendations on how to prevent in the future. Nothing bad about the recommendations, just that I am going to have to shell out money :( The Ugly: because he was so thorough, he found another spot with mold that I didn't even realize was there. So, hopefully with that, will be able to correct without too much damage. Ian was very knowledgeable and gave me comments that will help both inside and outside of my house.
