I had a wonderful time watching Indianapolis Ballet's performance here…read more It was my first time but it was easy to navigate. I knew there was a garage but I parked on the street a block away, which was the right decision as I heard it takes long to exit the garage after the show if you park there. It is such a beautiful space. When I got inside, it was unclear where I was supposed to go. But once I went to the right section,The seat was easy to find. However, unfortunately the people with poor etiquette ruined my experience a bit. Some were constantly talking during the performance, others took out a phone with a bright screen in when it was dark. I think they need to remind the audience to be courteous and respectful, although it is a common sense.

I always get seats up on the terrace levels as it just gives me a better view of the show. The staff here are friendly, whether it at the bar, the Merch tables, or just helping with ushering. They're all very friendly usually have a smile on the face in our as helpful as possible especially for people in situations that are not normal. The seats are a little small, but that's to be expected in a older auditorium. But it seems as if everyone has a pretty direct view of the show no matter where you're sitting on the floor up on the terraces, there are three of them, or anywhere in the auditorium. I really don't see a whole lot of places here that have any obstructions whatsoever. They bring in a number of Broadway shows every year, do a lot of concerts here, and of course, the university stuff. Highly recommended.

During the night of my visit I saw a solo artist with a small band. The sound quality was quite good with very little feedback. I enjoyed sitting at the cabaret style tables toward the back. I also attended the annual bourbon tasting at Turntable. In addition to concerts and shows, they can host some special events as well. The space is not big so don't expect to cramp too many people in there. The Vogue is an iconic venue in Indy but Turntable has its merits also. The vibe is definitely different and I enjoyed seeing a more chill show in there. They have multiple events every week so keep an eye out on their calendar.

But I do want to add a couple caveats to that (and out myself as a cranky old man). We saw a sold-out show here recently and found it to be just too damn crowded for the allotted space, which limited our enjoyment of the music and also made me think it's not terribly safe. We did end up finding an intimate spot by a garbage bin near the back where we could sort of see the stage and chit-chat with the drunkards who were also back there for easy access to the bar. And we were definitely happier there than we would have been near the stage, where everyone had to sacrifice elbow room and the option of a bathroom trip in favor of a better view. We would have been a little happier in the premium seating (which was sold out before I was able to book), but, lesson learned. I'd just rather be at a place where capacity is more limited but the setup is geared toward ensuring the audience has a little more comfort.

In 2007, ICO joined the Indiana State University Contemporary Music Festival as Orchestra-in-Residence - this is an honor that continues to this day. In 2012-2013, it also became Orchestra-in-Residence for the Butler University Schrott Center for the Arts. In 2015, ICO released its first commercial CD "Momentum 21." I've seen ICO more than once - most recently at Garfield Park, an ideal location for this smaller orchestra as they played beautifully surrounded by the sounds of nature and an absolutely stunning day. ICO has nearly 2,500 supporters, nearly 40 seasons, 235+ performances played, and 34 musicians. ICO's mission is to advance and promote music composed for the small orchestra through professional concert performances and education programs. They have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion on their website and in their practices. As I began exploring their concert season for this year, I was impressed that they openly had references to accessible seating. As a wheelchair user, I'm often used to the idea that I have to go hunting for the information. The Schrott Center for the Arts is quite accessible. You can buy season tickets or individual concerts. They also do educational programming including virtually. Matthew Kraemer is the music director and principal conductor. While ISO gets an awful lot of attention here in Indy, I actually really love ICO with its smaller orchestra and more intimate sound. There's a passion that comes alive that I really appreciate and these artists have unique programming and a true sense of adventure in terms of what they'll perform. If you've never been to an ICO performance, I highly recommend it.

Indianapolis Shakespeare Company definitely still exists, and right now you can watch their production of a Midzoomer Night's Dream on YouTube. It was going to be a live production of a Midsummer Night's Dream, but then...well....COVID happened. I saw their production of Hamlet last summer at Riverside Park and it was excellent. They aren't rigid about gender of characters and also cast many actors of color which is absolutely wonderful to see. The current YouTube production was excellent and I can't wait until next summer when we can hopefully all gather for the live version!

The Indianapolis Shakespeare Company (until very recently known as Heartland Actors' Repertory…read moreTheatre, or HART) runs free, professional quality outdoor Shakespeare in White River State Park every year. The show only runs for one weekend a year, so watch the calendar to make sure you don't miss it! I'm a very regular theatre goer, and I love seeing free Shakespeare in the park: you're outdoors with people of all ages, enjoying the fresh air and the immortal words of the Bard. My expectations are usually pretty low; I've been to a lot of free outdoor Shakespeare that wasn't very good. But the 2017 production of As You Like It was a pleasant surprise, and an excellent show: the acting was good, the show included musicians and a really great singer (with what appeared to me to be some original music), and (this is key) the actors were all mic'ed well enough that you could clearly hear everything they said. (Kudos to the sound design team!) Overall, the evening was delightful. Some tips to help you enjoy your visit: - Ample $10 parking is available at the Indianapolis Zoo parking lot. It's an easy walk to the Celebration Plaza Ampitheatre from the zoo lot (or there's a golf cart shuttle for those with mobility issues.) - Arrive early! They offer free lawn chairs for public use, but when I arrived at 7:30 for an 8:00 PM Saturday night show the chairs were all claimed. You can bring your own blanket or lawn chair, as well. And there's pre-show music to entertain you while you wait for the show to start. - Bring a picnic! You're allowed to bring your own food to the park; they also had food trucks and Sun King beer for sale ($5 for a draft beer.) - Beware the setting sun: the ampitheatre is in a lovely location right on the river, but it means that the setting sun creates some big time glare that makes it hard to look at the stage. I recommend bringing sunglasses and wearing a brimmed hat, and arriving early enough to find a spot with minimal sun glare. Bring a jacket or blanket too, if it's going to be a chilly night. The company appears to be based out of Butler University's Theatre department. They have (equity and non-equity) auditions in March for their summer shows; you can find out more on their website. I'll be back in 2018 for sure!
