Great customer service and a better variety of trees than most of the tree farms. They were so kind and knowledgeable. I have been to a couple tree farms up at Apple Hill but this is the best experience I have had so far. You can cut your own tree or have them cut it for you. Been coming here for 40+ years, and you can't beat the experience, even though it's gotten very, very expensive over the past 7-8 years. The next generation of the family has clearly taken over the business and they realize that the demand is so high they can charge quite a bit more than what the previous generation was charging. I wanted to start a new tradition with my son and came to Indian Rock to get a fresh tree for Christmas. The view is just amazing here and there's small waterfalls. Nestled in Apple Hill, it's the epitome of Christmas. Coming in, there's precut trees that were recently cut or you can drive in further to choose your own tree to cut. It's a really big lot and very spacious with a lot of trees to choose from. It took 2 hours and walked around 1 mile to find the perfect tree but that's because I'm pretty picky. Once we found our tree, we yelled cutter and a cutter came to cut it for us. He even offered to take a picture for us. There's an option to have the cutter bring it down or to bring it down ourselves. They have a few different types of trees. Silver tip is more in the back of the hill. Most of the trees are pay per foot. The taller the tree, the more expensive it is by feet. My 9' white tip tree came out to be $135. They do sell food and drinks here such as hot dogs, donuts, and cider. There's a fire pit as well. Multiple porta potties are available. read more

What a great experience! The family loves to come here to search for a tree. It can be a hike if you take the wrong route, but the kids have a great time exploring the farm. They offer pre-cut trees in the front parking area or you can find your own towards the back and call out for a cutter. Even if you don't leave with a tree, be sure to try the apple cider from the gift shop or maybe pick out a wreath from the tree prep hut. They recently started charging a parking fee for reserving a spot during Thanksgiving weekend, but it seems to flow well. The prices here are comparable. The prices all depend on what species of tree you choose. We have been getting our tree here for the past eight years. This year was only the second time we didn't leave with one, this year just because we found the one at the last minute and the staff never showed when we called. The other was 8 feet and cost $200. We were shocked and won't be back. If they had just told us they charge $25 per foot we never would have come. Maybe that's why. They had their act together. I'll give then that. My neighbor gave us a reservation. We arrived right on time. They were pretty busy but managed to find us a parking spot. The attached sign shows the prices. Good luck figuring out what the final height will be (after cutting) or even which species you get. When you find a tree you like you yell "cutter" and someone comes up with a saw. Ours knew the species (the most expensive type if course) so I suppose you could ask them but it's a little hard before you find the tree you like. He cut and carried the tree down. They had food and drink I believe. We didn't get any. Saving room for apple donuts down the road. Took my tag to the cashier. $136 with tax and tip! That works out to basically $4 a day for each day the tree was up. I actually left it up way into the new year just to justify the price. Why 4 stars? Because I read the reviews. I knew it was going to be expensive. It's a beautiful drive. They have their stuff together. The property is beautiful. The tree, which is now leaning against the woodpile in the side yard, still looks like we just cut it down. They have great trees and run a nice operation, just be prepared to pay. read more

We were so excited about this place but this just wasn't a good year I think.z we had overheard one of the workers that the year before they let customer chop trees below 5 feet which made it difficult for the following year trees to grow. So while there were a lot of nice trees, they were all about 6ft. We needed a tree about 9 feet tall and unfortunately we could t find any to our liking. Pros; the tree lot is beautiful. It's quite serene. They have two parking lots. A front one and then a back one. The backbone of over a bridge that passes by a small stream and a nice place to have lunch and then once you get to the back lot, you can park and do the "u" cut trees. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. They have a bee system this year where got register your spot snd time online. Which made it nice so you were guaranteed a spot and it wasn't overly crowded Cons: the hills are steep. While my husband and I were fine, the kids and grandparents were not. Can be slippery and almost everyone slipped going up or down the hills. When you register, you pay for parking ($12) and then you have an hour and half alotted time. We were hoping to be able to have a picnic by the water but we had used up our parking time while looking for a tree and had to go. It's a beautiful spot with friendly staff. Just picked our tree today and we are sooooo happy! The trees here last a really long time and you can get exactly what you want since you pick it out off the side of a hill. Cezar carried our ginormous tree all the way down the mountain. I love the staff here, and I love that we can bring our dogs (leashed) and explore all over. It's definitely our pre-Turkey Day tradition. The property is also meticulous. My favorite part of today was bringing our Labs to splash around in their fly fishing river. 2nd year coming to Indian Rock Tree Farm on Thanksgiving weekend. Looks like we might be starting a tradition. We actually found this place last year by accident and glad we did. We park down below and walk-in, you pass a bridge which a great picture opportunity with a babbling brook. On top they have an old gold mine that has been closed off but you are still able to walk inside and sign your name on the wall. The kids love it and you can take your well behaved dog on a leash with you. They have different varieties of trees and different price ranges. Yes you can find a less costly tree at Costco or Home Depot but the experience with family and friends can't be beat. Last year we walked all the way up to the top and it was pretty wet and muddy, this year there was snow and half of us decided to find a tree lower this time instead of maneuvering the steep trail. Once you find "the one" you shout out "CUTTER" and a lumberjack will show up in a red jacket to help cut it and walk it down for you. Before heading up the mountain the kids like to get some hot chocolate and a snack. They have hot dogs, chili Beans and pretty decent tamales. Oh and of course apple cider. Larry and Geri have owned the property for about 50 years, and Larry has been working nonstop to make your experience memorable. They're a really cute couple. It's a family business, and you can come in the off-season (that's nine months a year) for the trout fly fishing. Larry's built a series of pools with small waterfalls that are really incredible and natural looking. All along the trout stream, there are shaded picnic areas so you can crack open a 40 and kick back (or listen to your 10 year old telling the family how he landed the monster). It's all catch and release, and you can call ahead for rates, hours and tips. And, I'm sure you can find out the cost of their Christmas trees before coming out, just to make sure it's in line with your expectations. There's a small craft shop where you can get apple pastries, coffee and hot cider. Can't go wrong there. As far as the trees go, we've gotten our trees here several times. It's always fun to trudge all the way up the hill, over and down the other side, only to realize the first tree you saw was "the one". Off the beaten path, and worth it! read more

Tucked out of the way of the major Apple Hill roads, this is a nice little gem of a place. With about six varieties of trees at different price points there is something for everyone looking for a fresh cut Christmas tree. This was my second year in a row coming here with a group of friends. I think the reason we wanted to come back is that its not just about finding and cutting down a tree. There are fire pits, hot cider and cocoa for sale, and just a jolly festive attitude surrounding you. They give cute buttons to the kids for accomplishing a trek to the top of the mountain (and quite a trek it is) and it is just a great family friendly place to spend an afternoon. There are plenty of "cutters" up and down the hills when you find the perfect tree to cut it down and take it to get wrapped up for your trip home. Some of our crew don't even get trees, just come along for a fun day outdoors. Highly recommend and look forward to making the trip again next year. read more

By far, the best place to go cut down a Christmas Tree. And by cut down, I mean walking all over looking at hundreds of tree's until you find the perfect one, having a "cutter" cut it down for you, haul it down the hill, and ultimately to your car, netted and tied down. The location couldn't be better. Upon arriving there, you find yourself looking up at what is basically a 180 degree view of trees and hill. And I use the word hill lightly, as some parts of it are straight up steep. But there are also paths winding throughout it, so most people should have few problems finding their way around. The hike to the top is worth it, and it affords one a pretty good view of the local area. Very picturesque. The hill itself is unofficially designated into different parts, simply by the type of tree that happens to be most numerous in each particular area. It seems like the silver tips, white firs and incense cedars are the most popular. But then again, we are usually set on getting a silver tip so that is what our eyes are trained on. Another great thing about this place is that its family owned, and not only owned but also operated. The kids and grand-kids of the owners can be found working different jobs all over the farm. And every person I've interacted with there were genuinely friendly. You just can't say that about too many places this day and age. The prices are about average for a tree farm in apple hill. Sure you could save a few bucks and head to the local, pre-cut tree farm here in town. But what fun is that? If you have the time and it isn't too cold, go find a tree and then make it an afternoon and have a picnic by the stream you cross over on the way in. And if it is cold, bypass the stream for a cup of warm cocoa and then warm up by the fire barrel. Christmas is full of traditions. The yearly trek to Indian Rock Tree Farm continues to be one of my favorites and one that will continue on long into the future. CUTTER!!!!!! read more

This christmas tree farm is amazing! I was so excited to come cut down a christmas tree and have a true tree hunting experience. This place does not disappoint. Everything was perfect here, from the super nice employees, to the HUGE selection (this farm is giant)....it's all great! We were able to bring our dog (as long as they are on a leash) and were given the chance to cut down our own tree even. I was so pleased with the experience. The only downside is you are going to pay more than you would at somewhere like Walmart. I think that's pretty obvious, but it's a whole entire experience you are paying for. It took my husband a little while to get into the spirit of cutting down a Christmas tree. Initially, he said he only wanted to purchase a tree from a farm with a name that met the two following conditions: 1) it's as pagan-sounding as possible, and 2) it sounds like a place you could have a last stand with federal marshals. And lo, there was Indian Rock! This place is great. We've been coming here for about five years and always wind up with a great tree at a reasonable price (between $45 and $55). The staff is super friendly and helpful. We've never had a hard time getting the kind of tree we want and at the appropriate height. And they have a ton of trees to choose from! I love getting cider and drinking it by the fire in a barrel. It's the best way to kick off Wintertime. (Well, this and a few beers from Jack Russell Brewery.) read more

I have been going here since I was a little kid. It is kind of annoying to find because I seem to forget where it is every year. This place is my favorite. I love hiking up the hillside every year for no reason looking for a tree. The prices are a little steep but Im not one to mind because I find it more enjoyable cutting down my own tree. Getting warm with apple cider near the fire is my favorite thing to do after getting the tree. I reccomend this place to everyone except the elderly. They probably won't make it that far. read more

We chose a really nice 6.5 ft one that ended up costing us $93 (with tax, net wrapping)..not including tip. Their farm is beautiful and service was great, so that is why I give them 4. I would give them 5 if they weren't so expensive. I believe Hillside farm charges a flat rate of $85 for any sized tree and Cedarville farm charges $24. read more

Went to buy a Christmas Tree yesterday. My rating is based on a buyer looking for a tree over 8 feet or anyone looking for reasonable price for a tree. I cannot recommend this place unless you want to visit a scenic spot and overpay for a six foot tree. This is a beautiful spot with Apple Hill views, a creek--hard to beat. But the main cluster of trees are all about the same height, fairly short. It took us a lot of walking to learn they had nothing in the main area we would want. At one point I asked an employee how much the trees cost. He said about $10/foot, but it was dependent on what type of tree you bought. I never saw a price list until prior to leaving on a sign partially up one of the trails. We were later directed down the road and to a less-used train and more thinly populated. But it had taller trees and we found a nice one. I asked the employee who came to cut the tree how talk it was and he said 12 feet. He did not know how much it would cost. We paid $229 for a "13 foot" white fir. It s a nice tree but I did not want to pay $229 for any Christmas tree. The checkout person would not budge on the price, and the tree was already cut. I will never come to this place again. They took a wonderful day of hiking and tree cutting and sucked the fun right out of it. My advice would be to give a price list to all the employees to hand out if they are asked. Secondly I would use tree cutters of sufficient experience to advise a client as to the actual sell price for the tree before they cut it. I feel ripped off and upset at turning Christmas into a semi-scam. read more

Lovin this Family Owned Farm! You pull up and greeted with peppermint warm smiles and cheers for the kids! Let the children run for an hour chasing after the perfect tree; not too big, not too small, not too green, a little bit of blue!! It's ok to be hungry because they have snacks! And hot chocolate! Make sure to look for "Dad" he's awesome to talk with. He's usually by the fireplace gathering sharing stories of his family, the farm, and serving in the military! Prices were over twice what we paid last year -- so we left them there! Luckily we found an excellent tree farm not far away with gorgeous trees, nice people and much better prices. All in all a tree in Sacramento would have got me for 50$ on a lot and I spent 60 here and got to make a day trip with my kids n family. Today we drove 2 hours to cut down a tree and I left feeling extremely regretful. Every year we go up to Plumas County/Oroville area and pay $15 to drive up the mountains in a wild area and choose a Christmas Tree. Today we hiked around searching for a decent tree that wasn't dying or totally bare in the middle. We did finally find a tree, and yes it was a 9ft Silver Tip but $137... are you kidding me?!? We also bout a small tree for my parents, a little 4ft-er and that was $71!! Anyways, this could be a really cool place but everything was waaaay to expensive, I would not come back!! read more

We have been coming here for 5 years for some great trees and service. Unfortunately things have been going down, except for their prices. We brought 2 other family members for trees. They wanted us to have the tree cut from the bottom, but it would be a foot too tall. So I did not find any other trees we liked, so we moved on. Our sister was able to have their tree cut as high as she wanted. It took 10 minutes to have a cutter come and cut the tree down. Their is a very high hill that you have to walk up for most of the trees. When our sister when to pay the cashier was very rude. She spent $90 for a tree and was poorly treated. Something that we will be looking into is that they wanted to know where we live, so they can charge the sales tax from there. We drove over 2 hours from the bay area to pay over 9% in tax. That just does not make any sense to me, and they were not doing that before. The next tree farm that we went to had better trees and they were a flat rate for any size. Thank you Indian Rock for not letting us being over charged for a smaller tree. We save $30 for your poor customer service. read more
