Coming back from Montreal, we were craving some good Desi food, and Yelp pointed us toward a couple of places. We decided to try Indian Grill--and honestly, from the outside, you would never guess that this is a fine restaurant with great food and excellent service! We ordered dahi gappe, pakoras, the Desi Thai curry that was recommended to us, a chicken curry, samosas, rice, and tandoori roti. Quite a spread! The dahi gappe were the real standout for me. They came with their own little cup of sweet yogurt, which reminded me a bit of lassi, while the crispy homemade gappe were filled with chana and potato. I've had my fair share of gappe, and these were simply exquisite. So many flavors and textures at once--the sweet, tangy, spicy, creamy and, of course, that fantastic crunch. Delicious! The rice was also spot on. Long-grain, perfectly cooked, with each grain holding its own. None of that mushy, stew-like or oatmeal texture--just how rice should be--and the flavor was right where it needed to be. Both chicken dishes were tender and flavorful, with the meat pairing really well with both the coconut-based yellow sauce and the richer red sauce. The samosas had their own distinct character, more in line with the Indian-style samosas than the Pakistani version I'm more accustomed to. Different, but very good! The ambiance was calm and inviting, and the interior was surprisingly nice. But what really topped everything off was the kindness and attentiveness of the staff. Their recommendations were spot on, and they clearly knew their menu. If I have to be picky, the music could have been a little quieter. In a restaurant like this, I prefer music at true background volume so you can focus on the food and conversation. But that's a very minor point and certainly didn't take away from the experience. This was my first time here. I heard their buffet is great but I ordered my meal to-go. I got Chicken Vindaloo (spicy) with a side of garlic Naan. The Chicken Vindaloo was so flavorful and the spice level was perfect. The sauce had a nice viscosity and the chicken was nice big pieces. Though they were tender, they were a little dry, and the rice was a little plain. As for the garlic Naan, is was soft and came with 3 unique sauces. Each were different but were fresh and added incredible uniqueness to the meal. I especially liked the green sauce and the pink pickled peppers. The whole dinner provided two meals. As for service, the person at the door was very warm and helpful with the menu. The inside of the resturant was very welcoming. Next time I'm in town, I look forward to trying their buffet. This place looks unassuming from the outside. However, inside the food is excellent. Aloo tika chat was excellent. Dhal puri was excellent. The goat biryani was excellent. Seriously, the flavors were authentic and complex. The seasonings were perfect. I'm not sure who did the cooking, but they knocked it out of the park. We asked for extra spicy without being over the top. They did a great job. Very spicy without being unbearable. I was completely impressed. The interior is very nice. The service was great. What a great find and a great lunch buffet this is! It's pretty convenient, just a short distance off the Northway. All of the offerings, hot and cold, are very nicely spiced, even the pakoras. I hope you like chicken, because at least today, I counted something like 5 hot chicken options on the buffet and also a cold chicken tikka salad. Dessert included both rice pudding and mango custard. At the far end of the buffet was a chai carafe, and at the near end - something I've never previously seen at a buffet - a dispenser of rose milk. I loved the music they were playing, very upbeat. Outstanding North Indian restaurant in Plattsburgh strip mall, don't miss this in the north country! Really superior vegetarian dishes and very fast and helpful service. Reasonable price for big portions. Our party of five got two meals from the take away from the dinner. We didn't have the buffet but many patrons were loading up. Came here during lunch and had their lunch buffet. $12.95 a person before tax and tips. The waiters were attentive in taking away the plates after we finished each round and refilling our waters. An authentic Indian joint. We ordered some North Indian fare - Butter Naan with Paneer Makani and a Vegetable Biryani. The briyani was of the North Indian style as I expected - a colorful and flavorful medley of rice and veggies paired with the slightly sweet and tangy raitha. The bread and curry again formed a beautiful pair soothing our palates nicely. The staff was amicable and patient, the restaurant was large, beautiful and clean.
