This is a surprising place... and an eclectic one. When I saw the mixed-up cuisine-focus on the…read moresign I was a bit confused at first. Touted primarily as an Indonesian Restaurant, it also qualifies itself as an Indian eatery, as well as presenting the cuisine of Suriname - and doing it all under the umbrella of being Halal (which may also mean "Pradesh"). Now that's a lot of cuisines, all from different corners of the globe. But then I recalled my week shooting a movie in Belize a decade ago, and there was the connection. In Belize there seems to be an unwritten rule (or tradition) that was proudly announced by our liaison from the film office. And that was that ALL OF THE GROCERY STORES (the country only had small mom & pop places) in Belize City were owned and run by Indians from India; and the most popular food, being Chinese steam table take-out joints like we have in America (fried rice, spring rolls, noodles, sweet & sour chicken/shrimp, spicy saucy stir fried meat & vegies, etc...), and these places were always packed with lines around the corner. They were also ALL OWNED AND RUN by Vietnamese extended families. And the Vietnamese community mixed very well with the Indian families, having similarly imported ingredients from afar, as well as exotic flavors, similar spices, rice based cuisines, and they both cooked curries. Now for Suriname and Indonesia and how those two food cultures fit into the menu profile at Restaurant Riaz. I have eaten a lot of Indonesian food in my day, and its flavor pallet is very similar to India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, all using coconut milk, peanuts, chili-peppers, potatoes, green peppers, fish-sauce, vegies, and similar meats and seafoods, plus blends of sweet and salty and spicy and sour; and all of them use rice. Now the thread that sews Suriname to these others is that it was also a Dutch Colony, as were Indonesia and parts of India (like Sri Lanka [Ceylon at the time]). So the Dutch created huge incentives for the Indians in their empire to relocate to the sparsely populated Suriname; and these Indians brought their food with them. So when I ate lunch in New York City at a Surinamese place in The Bronx, I was surprised to see the menu filled with Curries, Chutney, Samosas, Fried Pakoras, and everything was served with rice and Indian Roti, (an oily flour tortilla-like bread), often accompanied by a small bowl of rich brown Curry-Gravy to dip into. The food from Suriname was Literally INDIAN FOOD. Thus the culinary story of Restaurant Riaz and its diverse menu started to make a lot of sense. The Indonesian food complimented the Surinamese meals; and the Indian dishes blended seamlessly with the other cuisines. And the Roti and Curry-Gravies went perfectly with everything. Restaurant Riaz is a big success story in my book. I can't wait to come here again - and this time I am going to bring a whole bunch of friends.

This reflects in the quality of food - you can get some very authentic and spicy options along with dishes 'blanded' down for the local flavor. Located in one of the nicest parts of the city (although there is a Subway that just opened up here), dining at Balraj is part of an even more extensive experience, that could include the best ice cream in town, nearby. One thing is for sure, you would be avoiding the throngs of aimless tourists and mind-numbing crowd noise. The prices are very attractive. Every dish comes with a serving of rice, lentils, an accompaniment in the form of a curry dish, and a 'roti'. It's a party in your tummy! Being a vegetarian, I still suffer from the lack of options, but that isn't generally a problem unless I aspire to dine here more than once a month. Even then, they have specials listed on the menu, which I assume are experiments that have the potential to be made part of the regular menu, if successful. One bit of advice - when in doubt about a dish, just ask. India has diversity in dish ingredients depending on region, even if they sound the same. So, something from the South could be a whole lot spicier than a dish with the same name from Central India. The restaurant is small and the tables were a bit too close to each other. It was difficult squeezing in between the tables to sit down. Luckily it wasn't too crowded during my visit. They have an extensive menu of both Indian and Nepalese dishes. I had already browsed the menu online and had a general idea of what I wanted. I started with a mint tea. It was really good and soothing. The server brought out complimentary papadum and it was delicious! I ordered the Bhindi Masala. The server asked what spice level I wanted and I requested mild. In hindsight, I should have said "no spice" or specified a spice level of 1 or maybe even 0 if that was an option lol. Her definition of mild was spice level 2. The dish was so good and so flavorful, but it was way too spicy for me. I was struggling with it and the server could tell. She insisted on bringing out another Bhindi Masala without any spice which I greatly appreciated. Since I had mint tea, it worsened the burning sensation. She suggested I try the Raita (yogurt mixed with cucumbers and tomatoes). It was really good and definitely helped to calm the spiciness. The portions are huge and I had so much Bhindi Masala left when I was done eating. I wasn't going to take the leftovers with me because I didn't have a way to reheat them, but the server insisted that I take it, so she packed it up for me. I tried a little bit the next day and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it tasted cold. The flavors marinated the okra overnight so the flavor packed a punch. It's unfortunate that European hotel rooms don't have microwaves because it would have been phenomenal the next day if I could have reheated it.

Of course I have had some delicious "Indian" food over the years. But either way, Ashoka is very nice! I've lived about a block away for over a year and it's my first time there, (of course half of that time it was not available due to the government pandemic restrictions). I ordered takeaway here late on a Sunday. but there were people inside, dining, having a great time. The staff was super-friendly and pleasant and even laughed at my stupid jokes. The food was amazing. HUGE portions. The naan is perfect (I bought two orders which is more than enough for two / three people)...rice is nice and light. The egg fried rice was super lekker too! Plenty of chicken in the curry meal. Something else I noted was the super-thick aluminum foil they used for their takeaway packaging. That's a sign (to me) they invest in quality. I ate too much because it was so delicious, so I worried I may have trouble sleeping with heartburn or worse, but I felt great. I think that's another sign of quality. I can't wait to dine inside. It is a very nice interior. Not a dive or unclean. I will take friends and family here whenever it's safe for them to visit. It may not appear to be the cheapest place, but don't let that distract you. It is near the center of Amsterdam in a very nice area, such high quality, clean with lots of space, it's worth it. (By the way, the Kinkerstraat part of the name is the location, since there is another location in nearby Spuistraat).
