The food was very delicious and they had some vegetarian friendly options. The main dishes were typically rice plates with assorted stews and sauces. The house naan comes with a trifecta of sauces and oils. Servers were very kind and informative about everything on the menu. Interior is cute, location is central (parking is not close, go into it expecting that.) As it's getting colder, I'm feeling like sticking closer to home when I go out. So I felt like it was finally time to try India Palace. The food was delicious. I wouldn't say it was the greatest Indian food I've ever had or anything, but. As I sat down I was offered hot tea and it was so comforting after coming in out of the cold. The tea was positively unctuous, like a hot chocolate in tea form. The chutneys were fantastic. The chicken rolls (a sort of spring roll with an Indian kick) were amazing. I got the chicken karahi and the spice level was perfect and the large pieces of chicken tender and gorgeous. My paneer kulcha was kind of just okay, and the rice that came with my entree was a bit.. wet. I think the only negative thing was the nature sounds white noise thing instead of music/silence. Wasn't into that. A wonderful meal though and I look forward to dining here again. read more

This must be at least the second time I ordered from this place, but tonight I wanted to try this place instead of my usual go-to, but now I wish dearly I hadn't. First of all, we ordered two dishes and I was certain that I clicked for "butter chicken" instead of "curry chicken" via 2dinein website, but when I inspected the bag, I received the latter. The receipt confirms this so could be my mistake. But I am sure I chose butter. There was not much chicken at all in the curry. The mixed vegetables were just okay... definitely seems like there are more of one vegetable and less of the other, if you catch my drift. The rice is also quite overcooked. Super puffy and fell apart. I really get disappointed with rice improperly cooked. That was the basis of throwing the whole meal off. This food is just "okay" but honestly it's the sort of thing you could make at home with those pre-made supermarket sauces. I stopped into this unassuming entryway expecting to be disappointed. But the food we had was STUPENDOUS. I went with 5 other people; we had lamb vindaloo, tandoori chicken, a saag paneer, malai kofta, and veggie pakora, with garlic naan. The appetizers were startlingly good -- everyone at the table remarked something along the lies of "WOW." The main courses were intensely flavorful, and generous -- even with only four main dishes between the six of us, we were easily satisfied. We kept remarking on how good the meal was for the hours that followed. It is easily the best Indian food I've had in Maine, and it rivals some of the best I've had on 6th street in Manhattan. Easily the most underrated restaurant in Portland, especially on Congress St. There is NEVER a wait to eat, the staff is super friendly, it's very cheap, and the food is drool-worthy. You literally cannot ask for a better experience. I usually never leave reviews until I've been to a restaurant more than 3-4 times to be able to make a fair assessment. On that note, India Palace is hands down the best Indian restaurant in Portland. I've probably had every chicken dish the off the menu. Haven't tried any of their other dish's so I can't comment on their lamb or veggie dishes. The chicken karahi and korma are a must order, along with the garlic naan. I find their dishes have fresher ingredients a long with a more balanced blend of spices than the other Indian restaurants in town. (Although sometimes I wish they'd make it spicier than their regular "extra hot" but it's usually plenty hot enough to make your whole body nice and warm. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating as well, along with the warm ambiance you'd hope for in an Indian restaurant. Overall if you like Indian food at a reasonable price you should definitely go to India Palace. read more

Portland's Asian restaurant scene has exploded with fantastic Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese spots everywhere. However, there are very few Indian options in the city that "has more restaurants per square foot than San Francisco." And after coming back from 2 weeks in Mumbai and Goa where we ate street food, family cooked meals, and at high end restaurants I feel Indian needs to be added to that scene. Indian food is full of delicious flavors: garlic naan bread, thick spicy gravies, and tasty chutneys. It can be vegan, it's mostly vegetarian, and yes there's meat. Indian Palace does a great job of making this case. We tried the Channa Masala, the Butter Chicken, and the Lamb Madras. Along with plenty of garlic naan bread, jasmine rice, and cheap beer. We left stuffed, satisfied, and missing the heat, the noise, and the people of India. read more

Wow. Im so pleasantly full and happy. Someone had recommended this place on a local Facebook page. Apparently they are under new ownership. I was blown away by how good the food is. We are regulars at TAJ (we did not care for hi Bombay or tandoor) and I have to say that it's honestly going to be a two way tie or very close. The Paneer pakora was so flavorful. You could tell they didn't just coat it in plain chickpea flour. There are def spices involved. The chicken tikka app was incredibly moist and flavorful and didn't burn my face off. Butter chicken was straight fire. I would say it's in the top 3 of butter chicken I've had. The saag paneer was delicious as well. It looks like they grill the paneer before going into the saag. Rice was cooked perfectly. Chef's kiss, baby!! We just got home from London and have been craving Indian. The price is right here as well. Definitely go check them out!!! read more

As soon as we walked in we knew we found a gem. In the words of my boyfriend: "I like the way the chicken looks. Like if you were to bring it home and grill it." We asked our waiter where we can buy some to bring home and he happily lead us to Masala Market in SoPo (another review pending) where we could find all kinds of teas and ingredients. The restaurant itself is bright, colorful, and CLEAN. The seating arrangement is interesting but I really like it. its a good use of a small space. The glasses were very clean, and our waters were always full. Our server did seem a bit nervous, but very very nice and knowledgable. A side note: It can be hard to find this place but its DIRECTLY under the 565 awning on congress st. I've traveled so many places for butter chicken and some are mediocre but THIS place has the best butter chicken. Delicious garlic naan and the freshest chutneys, which are extra condiments for free. I have come to this restaurant on one occasion and had it delivered on another. On neither occasion was I impressed with the food. It was edible, but I have had much better Indian cuisine. Their mango lassi was good, but the chicken biryani was bland and really lacking the traditional spice and flavor profile I am used to with biryani. The aloo piratha was also lacking spice. I wonder if because they are catering to a mostly non-Indian clientele they they don't use as much spice as people complain? I needed an Indian fix on Easter Sunday - thankfully, they were open! Doesn't seem like much from the outside, since it's just a little narrow doorway, but it opens up on the inside to a very cozy-feeling Indianly-decorated place. I had absolutely delicious paneer nan (cheese nan). I could have just ordered more of that and been happy. Then chicken tikka masala and vegetable biryani, both of which were very tasty. Lunch prices, so the main dish was $6.95 and the rest I don't remember well, but it was tres reasonable. My brother, cousin and I walked into the restaurant not knowing what to expect. The staff was very nice. He got us waters and was very attentive. I got the chicken curry, my brother got the shrimp curry and my cousin got a chicken spinach type dish. The waiter gave us two plateful of rice. They came with our food. The rice was different from what we were used to. It was thin and long... the curries that we got did not have any spices. They were very bland. I thought that it could have been better. We had to use the sauces they gave us to give it a kick. My brother also got a mango lassi and it tasted like the mango or yogurt went bad? It wasn't as sweet or as fresh as other restaurants. We used to go to Tandoor for years but recently we've had food poisoning from the place so we've been trying the other Indian restaurants in Portland. I've now been a few times to India Palace and I think it's at the top of our Indian places in the city (I have yet to try Haggarty's). The place doesn't look like much but the food is great! I've had the chicken korma and the tikka masala and they were both delicious. The waiter was very nice and attentive to us (the water glasses were never empty which is great when you as for your dish to be "hot"). I would recommend India Palace as a great place for lunch.
