The naan was well balanced of garlic and butter. The chicken entrees were tasty. You can choose your spice level up to 10. This is a great place in Ames to get Indian food. If you or a friend have never had Indian food before, this is a pretty good place to try. The interior is simple and nice, it is very clean. There is a good ambience and they show some Bollywood on the tv which is entertaining. They have a good amount of booths and tables. But I can imagine a wait if a lot of people are in all at once. The staff is also incredibly friendly. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. If you're new to Indian food and unsure of what to order, ask the staff, they're really helpful. When you order, you can scale how spicy you want your dish to be. If you have a great spice tolerance, a 10 probably won't phase you that much. But if you're pretty moderate with spice, picking the middle range can give you a nice kick. The spices and texture is incredibly smooth. And the rice is so fluffy. I love their rice. I've heard many good things about this place, and it's well deserved. Definitely a great place to bring your friends, especially the ones who want to try Indian food. read more

We love Indian food, and looked forward to eating here. We were surprised and disappointed. We came in expecting a nice sit-down meal and understood it would likely cost $50 or more. It did cost that much, but we would not have paid that for fast food... and it wasn't fast. My wife left saying she felt ripped off. See below for details. We went here for lunch, and got the Chicken Korma and the Chicken Tikka Masala, with Naan and Garlic Naan, and a Coke. The Coke was in a can... no glass, just the can... for $2.49. There was no waiter or waitress, just order at the counter. When the food came out, it came with Styrofoam plates and plasticware. The food was in plastic pint to-go containers, and the rice was in small Styrofoam to-go containers. A pint of Korma or Chicken Tikka Masala for $17.99?!?!? WOW! That's pretty pricey! The Naan was wrapped in aluminum foil. It did not look like any Naan I've ever had - it was completely flat, more like a thick tortilla than Naan. Not even like a pita. The Naan was $3.99 for regular Naan, and $4.99 for the Garlic Naan. The food was OK in taste, but really a let-down when expecting nice Indian food. And for a place that really looks like a nice restaurant, it was quite surprising to have the food served in to-go containers. Almost like "You can eat here, but we'd prefer you didn't." I grew up eating here with my mom at the old location as often as we could, and its so fun to be able to still come back here from time to time. It is always worth the drive to Ames- the owners are so kind and friendly, their host is very helpful and attentive, and their food always exceeds any expectations. They have sooo many vegan options for meals and appetizers that I still haven't tried all of them. I finally got to bring my girlfriend here to try out my favorite restaurant and now she's hooked too and always asks when we can get samosas again! I was in town with a couple of friends, visiting the Mayhem Comics and Games. This place was right around the corner so we decided to grab some lunch. I gotta say, I'm glad we did. I was immediately impressed with how clean and modern the joint was. They clearly just finished some renovations and the decor was quite nice. It's on the small side but there's plenty of room between the booths and tables. We got some pakora to start with, which came with a sweet dipping sauce, and a savory one with a hint of mint. They were easily the best I've had. About big enough for two good bites, and there were nine on the plate. We each got an entree, and they all came with rice as well. I also grabbed a big bottle of Flying Horse beer. When the wait staff (extremely attentive and prompt) brought the food out, they asked if we'd like some naan bread as well. We got garlic. The naan. Was. Amazing. We all got medium spice (they do it on a scale of 10, I got a 7) and it was hot enough to get me going but not cause a meltdown. I tried everyone's food and everything was insanely tasty. One of my buddies also got a mango shake and was flipping out about how good it was. All in all, I loved it. Cute place with amazing food. The service was great as well. We drove about 40 minutes because of some shopping we needed to do nearby but quickly decided we would drive back just to eat here. We started with the Veggie Samosa which were as fresh as could be and had a very flaky pie-like crust. Well seasoned filling of carrots, peas and potatoes. The Mango Chicken and Chicken Tikka we're both delicious. The waiter helped us decide on Tikka rather than Curry because the Curry and Mango would have been very similar sauces. We finished with the rice pudding which had an aromatic flavor and we both decided it was just OK. Next time we will probably try the mango ice cream. Someone at a nearby table ordered it and it looked bright orange and delicious (the menu picture doesn't do it justice). read more

It has been a hot minute since I've had me some Indian food, so it was about time! When I went to India Place a few weekends ago, it was gloomy out, so it was the perfect day for some curry. I'll be completely honest here: I can count how many times I've eaten Indian food on one hand...yes, I know...how embarrassing. Regardless, I think I have good judgement, so I'm going to cross my fingers you find this review to be helpful. We all were set on getting curry when we arrived, but being that we were all rookies in the Indian cuisine game, we relied on our waiter for recommendations and knowledge. Lucky for us, our waiter provided tremendous assistance. He was one of those guys that you can tell is always in a happy smiley mood. I ended up getting the Lamb Mushroom curry ($13.99), my boyfriend got the Lamb Vindaloo ($13.99) and our friend got the Lamb Tikka Masala ($13.99). Our waiter let us know that with any dish, we can determine our own "spice level." Everyone at our table chose mild because we weren't sure if the restaurant had a different definition of mild than we did. We didn't want to risk our tongues going numb. We also got the Cheese Naan ($3.99) to share. Now that I've tried their mild level curry, I'd suggest being courageous and choosing a spicier level. I was hoping to get a small kick with my dish, but my dish was 100% creamy. Don't get me wrong, it was marvelous, and warmed my heart and tummy, but a little bit of spice to cleanse my soul would've made it even better. The fellas enjoyed their dishes a lot too. The lamb is excellent with the rice. As for the Cheese Naan, I would not get that again. It was greasy to the touch, and at the very least, I was hoping this meant super melty cheese in the middle...this was not the case y'all. They stuffed the Naan with feta cheese...no stringy-dripping-deliciousness anywhere to be found. Feta cheese is fine on certain dishes, but I've had way better Cheese Naan before. I talked up the Naan to the fellas at my table since they had never had it, and it left them disappointed. This is a fun place to try if you are in the heart of Ames, Iowa. Their staff is amazing and even if Indian food is out of your comfort zone, it's certainly worth a try here! They are so accommodating and will answer any questions! I usually don't eat Indian food but I've heard nothing but good things about India Palace so we ordered a lot of food and it was great portions! the mango lassi's are amazing!!!!! The greeter behind the cash register is awesome and exudes good vibes. Very tree nut allergy friendly! We can get any order without tree nuts easily which is good. The only thing is it's a little expensive for a college restaurant but I guess the food is good enough that they can do whatever they want. read more

I am so glad this restaurant reopened. The family and service has always been so hospitable and the food is delicious and good every time. I like the dinner for two to provide some variety. It includes vegetarian or lamb samosas, chicken tikka masala, butter chicken and chicken tandoori. Everything is delicious. If you like more heat they can make the food hot for you. I enjoy a "can't have a conversation because I am on fire hot" and they can do that without losing flavor. That said, the food is naturally mild and flavorful and feels comforting to me. I am always greeted warmly and treated as if I am family being served in a home. The restaurant is cold so wear an extra jacket or sweater. This is one of my favorite Ames restaurants and is so because the food is good, consistently and perfectly executed and the owners provide the kind of environment you just enjoy. I am hungry thinking about it while writing this review it is so delicious. Don't forget the naan, I prefer the garlic naan. read more

Wife & I made an unplanned stop for dinner at Ames' India Palace while we were driving back from Minneapolis to Des Moines. We are very happy with our impulse decision. Ames is lucky to have this restaurant. We were promptly greeted and asked to sit wherever we'd like. Our waiter came by quickly and took our order: Samosa, Paneer Makhani, garlic Naan, and Mango Lassi. The food arrived so rapidly that it was still piping hot. The garlic Naan was soft, warm, fluffy, cloudy, and drenched in ghee (Indian butter). The samosas tasted fresh; flaky & crispy on the outside, and hot & soft on the inside. We were also pleased that they were not very oily since samosas are traditionally fried. The curry was simply perfect. We ordered it medium spicy. The one oddity was that the paneer was minced into tiny pieces instead of small to medium sized cubes as normally served, but I think their alteration improved the taste profile since each tiny piece of paneer had more surface area for the curry sauce to cling to. The best part was that we didn't walk away feeling like we had a big greasy meal, as that can often be the case with rich, North Indian food. My only regret is that this restaurant is not in the Des Moines area. I guess we will be driving up to Ames more often now! read more

While on campus for an interviewing trip, I was looking for something different and found this restaurant. This appears to be a family run establishment and service was very attentive and friendly. I was there for dinner, so the buffet was not in operation. All of the food was good. I enjoyed a chicken dish whose name escapes me along with dal makhani and plain naan. I ordered the chicken at the hottest chile level and it was nicely warm, but not incendiary. The menu comprises pretty standard northern Indian dominated dishes, familiar to those who frequent Indian restaurants in the US mid-west. I had a nice dinner and would certainly return on a future visit to Ames. It would be nice to be there with a group to allow a wider sampling. read more

Re-opened and better than ever, India Palace is my go to for Indian food in Ames. An added bonus: you get can India palace delivered to your home. Dishes are somewhat pricey at India palace but you get what you pay for in terms of quality and I almost always have enough left over for the next day. I'm boring when it comes to Indian food and almost always order the same thing (chicken Tikka masala because who doesn't love a cream sauce?) but everything I've sampled from India Palace has been great. I've had tandoori, vindaloo, Chana, samosas, naan... not a single disappointment. Even my picky father in law was impressed with his vindaloo and he's never impressed. I don't even know if he likes me, but I know he likes the vindaloo. I digress. My husband always gets the Chana masala because he feels the chick peas are the perfect texture every time: not mushy, not hard. The best Indian food in Ames. I've tried Indian delights and it just doesn't compare. The naan here is incredible, not too oily and perfectly fluffy when it is brought to the table. I have probably ordered chicken tikka masala more than any other dish. They give a good portion and the flavor is really good. Tip: get it at spice level of 7/8. The chicken tikka and chicken tandoori are close second, the marinate that they use is phenomenal. Lastly for drinks, the mango lassi is refreshing after a meal, texture and flavor is perfect.
