Food was good. Off you don't know what to try, they will give suggestions, and it's well worth it.

I rarely get to go our for Indian food so I ordered a lot of food knowing I'd have leftovers. I started with the Chicken 65, medium spice. It was perfectly spiced and so crispy! For my entree I ordered butter chicken, medium spice and butter naan. It was silky, perfectly spiced and the chicken was so tender. The rice was perfectly cooked as well. For my glutinous amount of leftovers I received a dish or container for each item. I was so very impressed and cannot wait to go again!

I have to admit that once we were seated it took a while for them to take our orders and things seemed kind of slow. My daughter, who trains servers at a national chain restaurant said she noticed they only had 3 servers for the entire restaurant of around 3 dozen or so tables. The food was delicious and we were checked on several times during our meal. When the bill came, our server apologized and said they were a lot more crowded than expected and he gave us a discount on our meal, which was well-received and appreciated. My wife said she would be coming back because the food was great. She said she would make it soon because of the apology.

Amruth took over a space that used to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants (Mazatlan) not far from where I live. I've been wanting to get there, but just hadn't made it yet. My birthday was a perfect excuse. Parking isn't an issue. It's in a small strip of businesses along Swanson and the lot is pretty big. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. I was shown to a table; my host also ended up being my server. The interior isn't fancy. The seating is a combination of booths and low top tables and chairs. The main seating is to the Right of the front counter as you enter. To the Left is a small area with a bar they are using for overflow and as a party room space. The menu is extensive and can be found online (https://online.skytab.com/bd3b12858938ae5724425b6f04ead3bf). I'd browsed it before arriving and pretty much knew what I wanted. My server took my drink order and brought a small carafe of water to my table. I ordered the Alfredo chicken 65 pasta (medium spice level) and that comes with garlic naan. It seemed a little unconventional... Pasta with Indian food...? But it's in their Amruth Specialty section and they wouldn't put something on on the Specialty menu if it wasn't good... Right? I also ordered a Masala chai. The pasta dish was served over a penne style pasta. Kind of a take on a cajun pasta with an Indian twist. Very good! I'd order this again and again...and again. The naan was fresh and tasted great too! Chicken 65 is something I've ordered as a appetizer many times so I had a pretty good idea of what I was getting. Interesting combination with the pasta and creme sauce... I will say I'm very glad I didn't order it at the hot spice level...the medium was lighting me up a little. And I don't shy away from heat... Lol My server checked on me every now and then and we chatted a little. I'd mentioned the spots I normally go to for lunch and their buffets. At Amruth they have an all you can eat dosa special on Thursdays (don't quote me on that, but I think that's what I read...call them and ask about it) and a buffet on Sundays. The Sunday buffet I am sure on... When we were talking he mentioned they offer 25-30 items on their buffet v. the 10 or so that other restaurants seem to offer. This will be something I have to check out! Prices are reasonable. I took care of my bill at the front counter when I finished my meal. They take cash or cards There is a small discount if you pay with cash. The portion of food I received ordering off the menu was huge and this would be a great place to bring a few friends and share dishes family style...! The customer service I had today was exceptional and the food was excellent. Definitely the caliber that makes me want to come back and check out some of the more traditional items on the menu! https://amruthindiangrill.com/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61557627782966

Our experience was the very definition of adventure. We drive up to an industrial building with little signage. As we drove around back we saw a "trucks only" sign. We pulled back around front unsure it was a restaurant, a truck stop catering to a specific community, or a mob front. Since I had my son and his girlfriend with me and could not let them down, I pulled my shoulders back, head high, and ready to do battle with whatever I was to face. What I was to face was an easy to read, very descriptive, menu board which made every dish sound enticing. The cashier/server was very nice, answered questions, and made sure to ask what heat level we wanted. Side note: the girlfriend said "Indian hot" and she chowed down. She earned a gold star for that one. Even my son who "doesn't like tofu" cleaned his plate. Any leftovers were loaded up and taken back to their apartment for "breakfast". Probably my favorite part of the entire meal was the spacing. Most restaurants pack in as many tables in hopes of getting more butts in chairs. For whatever reason there was at least 6 feet between every table. You truly felt as if you and your dinner mates were privately dining. I can't speak to the authenticity of the meal as I have never travelled to India. But, I guarantee this is the closest to Mumbai I've ever been.

It was a Friday evening and when we entered, about half the tables were full. We were guided to a table and given menus and water (glasses and a pitcher) arrived shortly after. My son definitely wanted the chicken momos. We asked for them as mild as they could make them. My husband chose the chicken vindaloo (medium) and I asked for the Korma Masala with chicken. I asked for it mild, especially so our son would be able to have some of mine, but was told it could only come medium or spicy. So I chose medium. We also placed an order of butter naan. My husband and son ordered fountain drinks. The waiter pointed out the fountain machine and told them to help themselves to start and for refills. My son and husband's food came out along with the naan. There was no mention about mine. We started to wonder if mine had been forgotten but then it came. Our son dove into his momos and almost immediately said they were too spicy. The other Indian restaurants we've been to put the sauces on the side. These had the sauce on them. He powered through and ate four. We were proud of him for doing so. My husband and I ate the rest. I enjoyed the flavor but agreed it would be spicy for a kid. The dumpling wrap seemed to be dry in places. Otherwise, I liked them. My husband enjoyed his chicken vindaloo for the most part. He did mention he's had chicken vindaloo at other Indian restaurants and said he didn't recall it being so tangy. My Korma Masala was fine. It was definitely spicier than I'd desired and there was no way my 8 year old would have enjoyed trying it. My nose would not stop running from the spice level. The butter naan was tasty. Service was non-existent once our food arrived. While other tables did get filled and orders taken, we felt completely ignored. We didn't know if the check came to us or if we needed to pay at the counter. No idea where to get to-go containers. We saw people from a large party coming up and ordering at the counter. Since this was our first time here, we had no clue if this was due to being understaffed or just the norm. Definitely not a good service experience. Our son was disappointed and asked to return to our "usual" Indian restaurant in the metro. I can't disagree.

I asked my host what's good. He told me to try the biryani. I added samosas to it because I haven't had them in years. While I waited for my food, I noticed how beautifully decorated the restaurant is. The paintings of Bollywood folks are bright, colorful and fun. It makes you feel the warmth of the place. The music was modern Pop n B with a Bollywood slant. Very nice and soothing and relaxing. Before I knew it, my samosas were there. They were delicious, hot and filled with spice. Nice flaky crust with a flavorful, soft filling on the inside. The vegetables inside tasted fresh and they popped with sweet flavor. Then the biryani came out in a bowl. It was FULL, fluffy, smelled so good and was visually pleasing. It was served with a gravy and a yogurt sauce with veggies in it. I dug in and found this dish so amazing. Just enough spice to clear my sinuses without making my palate go numb. The chicken was tender and perfectly cooked. It was so much that I only got a quarter of it in me. Very much worth the price. Great value. The next time I get to Ankeny, I will be stopping here. It's too good to pass up! Thankful to have found it.

As someone who hates their food touching, I thought their attempt at thali plates was humorous. They are the exact same lunch trays you found in your elementary school cafeteria, complete with a specific square for your carton of milk. I loved it, but I could see how some people think this could be tacky. When you enter and say you want the buffet, you're offered the choice of butter naan or plain naan. This comes to the table fresh; there were two of us and we got four pieces to share. I do not know if it was refillable or if you get more if your party is bigger. They also give you a large container of water for your table. They had a setup with about 12 different dishes; it looks like they might plan to expand the buffet at some point as the back row was all empty trays. The vegan/vegetarian dishes were segregated on their buffet line; the dishes with meat were on their own line. My vegetarian friend really enjoyed the dal and said it was some of the best he'd had. I had the karampodi chicken (a dry dish; its kinda like the gobi 65 appetizer), a chicken dish, some "kebas" that were pretty much plain chicken, rice, and the veggie fritters. Huge plus for having chai on the buffet along with galub juman! I had far too many of these. Minuses: They had raita which I love, along with a chutney. These were in bowls out in the open. These should either be kept over ice or in a chilled cooler, especially the raita. It looked like they didn't do a great job of refilling some of the dishes, I was disappointed they never refilled the fritters while we were there. It looked like they were trying very hard to keep up there. The lunch buffet I believe was $18.99+tax; I didn't pay for the meal this time. Again, soft four stars; will be back to try again shortly as well as add some exterior photos. Was surprised that no one else got to this yet.
