I was thoroughly disgusted with the customer service at India Gate in downtown St. John's this past Friday, August 9th, 2013. I am not referring to any of the waiters, waitresses or cleaning staff. I am speaking specifically about the owner, Mr. David Sood. Mr. Sood was rude, disrespectful and obnoxious. This past Friday, I and five of my colleagues from work organized a farewell meal for an employee. We had been to India Gate multiple times throughout the year to celebrate achievements in our workplace. Of our party of six, four of us were eating from the buffet, the fifth ordered extra naan bread and an ice cream. Meanwhile, the sixth did not order anything because she wasn't feeling well. Halfway through our meal, we were approached by the owner of India Gate, Mr. Sood. He told us that we should not have brought the two people that were not buying lunch, as this occupied seats for paying customers. Meanwhile, I looked around the restaurant and noticed several empty tables (seven in total). One of my colleagues apologized and said she was ill and unable to eat, while my other colleague said she did in fact order food as she pointed to the ice cream she was eating. The owner then responded "Well, ordering an ice cream is not enough profit to pay my bills." Shortly after, we approached the front desk to pay our bills. While paying, one of my colleagues very politely and discretely made a complaint about the service. She spoke calmly with Mr. Sood's wife as she went to pay and requested that India Gate please notify customers in advance that they must pay a certain amount of money in order to eat in their restaurant. Overhearing the conversation, Mr. Sood came over and insisted that my colleague speak to him about her complaints rather than to his wife. My colleague was uninterested in speaking with Mr. Sood after he had treated her in such a rude and unprofessional manner. At his insistence, my colleague eventually did speak with Mr. Sood and, provoked by his overbearing rudeness and disrespectful tone, they began to argue with one another. Raising his voice, Mr. Sood demanded first that my colleague and then that our entire party leave his restaurant. As we were walking out of the restaurant, the owner chased us into the porch, approached my colleague who had made the complaint and said "You little bitch, don't come back again." We cannot get over how unprofessional and vulgar Mr. Sood acted this past Friday. It is extremely unwise for Mr. Sood to treat us and the other up and coming professionals of this city in such a manner. Regardless, he does not have the right to speak to any of his customers like this. We will not be eating in India Gate again and we have used our extensive social media networks to let our peers know how we were treated while eating in this restaurant. -Justin King read more

The food here is delicious - flavourful curries and delicious naan (you must try the garlic naan!). It really is the best Indian food in St. John's, and they know it, which is why the prices are so high. We would go here more often if it wasn't so dang expensive (i.e. $80 for two people). The owners should come up with a quick and inexpensive takeout special for two people - students and the general public would be happy and loyal forever! read more

One of my favourite places to eat. The food is consistently delicious, and I have yet to try something I didn't like. I especially like this place because the food is very authentic and way better than anything I could make at home. read more

Really enjoyed our food here. Most authentic tasting Indian food we found in the city. A lot of the items are quite spicy but can be made to taste. Naan bread was delicious and fresh, the masala was very flavourful, same goes for the pakoras, samosas and everything we tried, definitely would recommend! read more

I called and made the reservation 2 days before. when we went there, they had no record of my reservation. The guy (only indian guy working there) who made the reservation was basically telling me that i was lying about reservation. I had to tell him that i called and asked for a booth by the window and wall. He didnt even let me complete my sentence, "ya, ya, ya, i'll get you a table" he told the waitress to give us a table and the waitress gave us a small table in the dark in the middle of the room. i asked her that i requested a booth by the window as we have a 15 month old. she went and asked the indian guy and he just nodded his head. We decided to leave.while leaving he was on the phone and i tried telling him that how disappointed i was. he didnt even looked at me. the waitress apologized a bunch but he had no worries in the world and didnt even bother to look at us or solve the issue. He's apparently the owner/manager of the place. I have never seen such a egoistic person like him. He shouldn't be in Newfoundland. We had planned to eat there for so long but such bad customer service just ruined our night. read more

I have been going to this restaurant for a while and it seems to be a hit or a miss depending on the week I go. But in general it seems that the quality seems to be getting worse and the quantity of food less. Last night when I ordered a take-out, I was charged double for some stuff but there was half the usual amount in the bag (1 garlic naan instead of 2 in the order and was charged $3 for 5 tiny papadums even though their menu says it is $1.95). We had India Gate cater a party at work and it was phenomenal. We had them come in and set it up; they brought all their own cutlery and dishes + the warming trays for all the food. Not only did it look great but everyone raved about the food. The butter chicken is sooo yummy! i'd definitely recommend doing this for a catered event. read more

This restaurant really ought to be investigated for their business practices. I paid $80.00 for my son's Christmas present, as it is a favorite restaurant of his and his girlfriend. On Christmas Eve, yes, Christmas Eve, they went for their reserved dinner and was told by Bobby that there was no proof that I pre-paid for his dinner. My son called me from the restaurant to see what this was about. I was assured by this idiot on the phone when I was paying for this gift certificate that everything was fine, and my son could make the reservation from St. John's, where he happens to live. Nothing to worry about, he said. I am from Orillia, Ontario and I was extremely upset that this happened, called the restaurant and asked for the idiot Bobby and was hung up on twice when I told him I had my Visa statements and banking in front of me and he was paid on Nov 23rd, according to my bank. My son said he was shuffling through bags and finally found a note about this transaction and then said he didn't have any proof - when my son stood firm and said so that's your problem, do you want me to pay and I'll come back with the proof? Then the guy honored the gift certificate. Isn't this embarrassing and shameful? I think something sinister is going on here and I hope patrons are paying closer attention to this guy and how they do business. I also intend to write a review on every site I can since the guy hung up on me twice and would not answer my calls. NEVER, NEVER AGAIN will I do business at any restaurant in St. John's because of this. I will call other people and other restaurants to inform them of this. Not good enough - you wonder what kind of people are running India Gate - either poor business practices or dishonest. Not sure if he is the owner or the manager but I assure you, I will find out. There are many nice restaurants in St. John's, I hear - go and enjoy one of them. read more
