I'm going to preface this by pointing out that it happened 10 years ago, but the experience was so negative that I have sworn off India Gate and haven't been back since (and I am an absolute lover of Indian food).
A group of 8 of us had a dinner at the restaurant. The service was atrocious; our server was unfriendly and brusque, and when she brought out our main course, she dropped off all 8 plates at the end of the table and left us to serve ourselves. My perspective on gratuities is that they are based on service and not automatic, and so I had no intention of tipping this server for her terrible service. When we received our bill, however, the gratuity was added automatically. I understand that this is standard practice for large groups in order to simplify gratuity, but even then I think it is inappropriate: it should always be conditional on the service that was provided.
I took my concerns to the maitre d' and was met with a blast of unpleasantness. He immediately went on the attack, asking me if I had any idea what it was like to work in food service and how hard these servers worked. I pointed out that yes, I had spent three years working in a (gratuity-free, I might add) fast food service position, and that gratuities should be based on the level of service (which was not sufficient to warrant a tip in this case) and not an automatic thing, and from there it turned into a shouting match. I stopped him and asked him to get me his manager. To the manager's credit the gratuity was removed from the bill as soon as we spoke, but the damage was done.
I have a problem with any business who fights with a customer when they present a concern or a complaint. Sure, some concerns/complaints are unreasonable, but they're never so from the perspective of the person making them. They should be shown respect, and if that can't be done, a former customer like me is created... someone who spends a few minutes warning everyone who utters the name India Gate away from it.
I will also point out that the prices are ridiculous at India Gate: as others have pointed out, double what a reasonably priced Indian meal should cost. There are better options in the city theese days price-wise (some within walking distance of India Gate) so I highly recommend you take the time to seek them out. read more
