The atmosphere it gave me was that the kind of people who own this store were more likely people who inherited it or just got tied into it somehow and while they don't need it they still keep it open. The man behind the glass was openly hostile from the moment I walked in. His attitude felt blatantly racist -- dismissive, condescending, and aggressive in a way that made it clear my race played a role in how I was treated. He lied about the current gold spot price (I checked it on my phone while standing there -- it was way off) and then offered me roughly 55% of what my necklace is actually worth. When I questioned the numbers, he became even ruder and basically told me to take it or leave. No explanation, no transparency, just attitude. I've sold gold before and have never been treated this poorly anywhere else in Houston. This place is predatory and discriminatory. Although it took a bit of education beforehand and a few minutes of negotiation, Rick offered the best overall evaluation of the gold pieces I was interested in selling, and very quickly offered what I considered a fair price based on the day's gold trading rates. Other buyers in the area, including the much advertised Gold and Silver Buyers, lowballed their offer by more than $300 (for only one of the three pieces) until I produced the documented quote from Rick Simmons. Gold and Silver Buyers then changed their tune and insisted they would match Rick's offer, but by then I'd lost confidence in their ethics, knowledge and expertise, and decided to forego the minimal additional amount they offered and plan to return to Rick at Gold Buyers of Texas, who I consider more honest up front.
