Great Plains SPCA is a fantastic no-kill animal shelter that quietly provides adoptions of dogs and…read morecats rescued from across the Kansas City metro area. The Johnson County-based member of the big 3 that includes Wayside and KC Pet Project. We found our rescue puppy here and couldn't be happier with the process and location. Very accommodating for visiting with kids with spotless private rooms to socialize. We appreciated the overnight hold option where you pay (donate) a nominal amount to not feel rushed and ensure the whole family could sleep on it before coming back the next day for the homecoming. The shelter is often overshadowed by Wayside Waifs, which also does a great job, however this facility and team are excellent for both dogs and cats. The Merriam location also has a small retail store that you can gear up new adoptions. As you would expect, adoption fees (donations!) are much higher for puppies and kittens than the less cuddly teens and pre-teens. Note: In prior years they offered a veterinary office that was open to the public, but those services are now reserved only for the in-house clientele (ahem - bob barker...). Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays unless you're a dogcatcher

Some of the folks there were helpful but others seemed like they didn't want you to be there. No help in the dog area at all. It's like you are at an outside mall that only allows window shopping. Not a friendly place that would make me want to adopt an animal. I do feel bad for the animals there. I'm hoping they pay more attention to them than the people coming into the shelter to adapt them.

After calling what felt like a million trainers in KC, I still had no luck. I'm not sure if it was because of my dog's breed or her behavior issues or what, but it was so frustrating. I was out on a run near my neighborhood and saw tons of Dogs by Debin signs (the one with the pink dog on it) and I realized that it was located at Amity Woods Animal Hospital. When I got home I did some digging online and discovered that Dogs by Debin rescued animals and I knew that they would know someone that could help me out. So I called them and they immediately gave me the contact info for a local trainer, Robert Masters from Dogs Listen to Me, and voila, I had a consultation set up with him ASAP. You can tell that Dogs by Debin really love what they do and that they're great at it! I'm attending a new volunteer orientation this week because I'm so moved by their serivce and I'm pumped to help out their cause! p.s. I'll review Dogs Listen to Me after we have some training completed :)

My boyfriend and I were looking to adopt another cat to be a companion for our first one…read more We went online and found a four year old cat named Katie through a lady on Craiglist. She had found Katie and had taken care of her. I talked to this lady for a week or so about Katie and we decided to meet at the PetsMart that she was being kept at. My boyfriend and I fell in love with her, and were ready to get the adoption going. We sat down at the adoption table and started filling out the forms. Then the Adoption lady and her daughter asked us how old we were. My boyfriend was 20, and I 19. We did not see that as a problem, and neither did Katie's finder, however the adopters were disgusted. As soon as they found out our ages, they wanted to get us out of their adoption place as soon as possible. Asking us questions in a snotty way, and being completely rude. We would have been great owners for Katie. I have been an animal lover my whole life, and worked at a PetsMart. I am an animal activist, and Katie would have gotten nothing but love. The adopters knew that, but once they found out that neither of us were 21, it was all over. The last thing the adopter said to me was "We will call you if you get approved for the adoption, but we don't call people who don't." HOW RUDE? The lady who found Katie talked to us afterwords and expressed her feelings towards Second Chance Pet Adoptions, and said that if she had known that they would treat great pet owners that way, she would not have asked for their help to find Katie a loving home. I called the Second Chance Pet Adoptions and left a voice mail a few days later inquiring about my application, and saying that if we did not get approved we would appreciate a call anyway because we wanted Katie to find a home. However, i never receive a call or e-mail or anything. We wanted to give a cat a second change. This cat was 4 years old, and most people want kittens. But we loved Katie. Adopting cats is a great thing to do. I am glad that there or organizations that do it. But, when someone pretty much spits in my face for being young, despite my aptness to adopt and love an animal, that place should be shut down or put under new management. It was absolutely absurd. So a few weeks later we went to Wayside Waifs, where the staff was super friendly and did everything that they could to help us find the right cat. They adopted to us the same day. We did fill out an application and were asked various questions, but they saw what kind of people we were, and that we would take care of any animal.

We can't thank the ladies from Second Chance Pet Adoptions enough for our new addition!!! I did not…read morehave the experience that Mary did... This place is without a doubt the most responsible animal shelter/rescue organization that I have…read moreencountered. I work full time as a veterinary technician and have 3.5 years experience in pet rescue, so I've seen my fair share of organizations in this field. I currently live in Austin, TX which is the largest no-kill city in the U.S. and still the HSGKC is as good as it gets. I adopted my rottweiler/shepherd mix, Hailey, from here almost 4 years ago. At this point in my life I had little to no animal experience. I had submitted my application online and came into the shelter later that week to meet the particular dog (not Hailey) I was hoping to adopt. I was advised by an adoption counselor over the phone that this particular dog may not be the best fit for me as my only experience with dogs was a generally friendly family dog I grew up with. I pushed back against their advice and INSISTED that I meet that particular dog. Upon meeting the dog at the shelter my adoption counselor, Kathleen, went into tremendous detail on what kind of things I can expect from this dog. I was also educated on what I would need to do as an owner to help set this dog up for success. At this point I realized I would be getting in over my head with this particular dog and was preparing to leave disappointed. A couple of very helpful volunteers were assisting at this point too. One of them asked me why I liked that particular dog so much and my (uneducated) answer was, "I like german shepherds!" even though at this point I wasn't even entirely sure what that entailed. After taking the time to get to know me, and honoring my request...they brought out the "next best thing" (which really really was the next best thing!!!) and I met Hailey. I had prejudged this dog (Hailey) because she was a rottweiler mix. The only shepherd looking thing about this dog to me (at the time) was the brown in her hair coat. Since I had very very little experience with dogs I had assumed that rottweilers were mean, vicious, "could possibly eat you alive" dogs. After about a minute and a half in the play yard my ignorant stupidity was crushed. This rottweiler beast had everything (I didn't know) I wanted in a dog: family friendly, dog friendly, fairly basic manners. So basically, "I met Hailey and the rest was history!" But really, the time, care, and effort the staff and volunteers here take in adopting out their pets is remarkable. They are not quick to push adoptions onto people. They make sure to carefully evaluate the detailed applications to ensure that the owner (and the pet) are matched perfectly. This shelter's focus is definitely quality over quantity. They don't have as high of an intake volume as many other shelters but I believe this is a responsible and caring thing they are doing for the pets. Had they not been careful and really taken the time to educate me I would've walked out with a dog that I couldn't handle. Instead, they took they time to find out what it was that I was really looking for and matched me with the dog that was the best fit. Since they don't have high volumes the staff and volunteers can really get to know their animals so they can make perfect fits like this happen. The two volunteers that helped me that day knew Hailey EXTREMELY well, and you could tell by Hailey's interaction with them. I am very grateful for the HSGKC for pairing me with the best fit dog! Hailey has well exceeded my expectation from what I wanted from a dog. We have lived in Austin for 3.5 years now and still go back to visit HSGKC when we are in town. Last time we visited (about a year ago) one of her volunteers got to say hi to her. It was amazing to see her reaction when she saw him, you can tell these volunteers leave lasting impacts on these pets. This is the only place I would feel 100% confident in when adopting a pet! **Also noteworthy, Hailey had distemper and HSGKC did all of her medical treatment and still brought her into their program.

Very easy to schedule via email. Prompt response in scheduling. Thanks for all that you do!read more
