For me the causal subway traveler it was a nice change as parts of this line and station were elevated so i had a decent view as we made our way back to Queens. The station is massive and straddles the roadway. School was out so the station and train were packed with kids going home. The line and station were as expected, busy and on the dirty side but functional and easy to navigate.

Know it will always make a stop at Jamaica station for you to move to different destinations/LIRR lines to go further out on the island or revert back to Penn Station and Grand Central lines to go deeper into Manhattan. This station as others have noted is a bit aged looking and in need of minor repairs, but is centrally placed where the MTA Subway line(s) 7 is only steps away when you go up to the street level. The trains going in/out are typically the double floor style making it easy to find a seat comfortably. There are a couple covered waiting room/bench areas, but no visible restrooms as you hit the platform. Be mindful of the rush hour style of offered trains as this isn't a 24/7 stop.

Barclays is the Springsteen or Stones of multi-faceted stations, but Court Square is the 38 Special, less iconic but delivering plenty of hits. I have sometimes thought of Greenpoint as "far" but a jaunt from Midtown via Court Square delivers impressive metrics when compared to the more obvious (to me) Williamsburg route. You get two great tastes here, the "classic" subway look of the G and E and the outdoor views of the 7.

It's a transfer hub where the IRT train (7) can transfer to the IND train line (E, F, and G). One gets a good work out walking the underground pathway. Court House Square has just exploded with development of mega high-rise buildings. Not too long ago this area was just factories and pretty deserted late at night and into the weekend. Recall taking the 7 train and you see Swingline, Wonder Bread, Chiclets, Maiden Form were some of the buildings as the train passes by. These stations have come a long way from where they were before. E and F train station was called 23rd Ely and now it's Court Sq-23.

Given the number of people that get on and off this stop, it's probably a solid candidate for an express stop some day. (#1) For the unfamiliar, the 46th Street stop is among the majority of stops that are above ground. For folks waiting at the station, it has some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline and unless there are stalled trains, it's never all that crowded. Another fun tidbit is that this is actually the last stop along Queens Blvd before the train turns onto Greenpoint Ave (#2) toward Woodside. Folks who want stay awhile will find that there are a number of eateries just outside of the station. It isn't the most exciting stop by any means and could probably use a facelift (#3). On weekends, there is often something going on at the street level side of the station. Just another reason why Sunnyside is worth checking out always. ____________ (#1) Who are we kidding? Flushing bound folks love that LIC to Woodside ride. If 74th Street - Jackson Heights can't have it, then neither can Sunnyside. That being said, having just dealt with no local Downtown trains from 125th Street due to track work, it would have been useful to have an in-station transfer crossover between Downtown and Uptown lines to allow returning to a station in-between. Czech artist Peter Sis designed the 86th St. station's 2004 bright, playful tile mosaics entitled "Happy City," which utilizes large eyes and circles, as well as incorporates stars, buildings, city folk, birds, assorted winged animals, and (my favorite) a flying winged Guggenheim Museum! It's fun to look at!

The Astoria Boulevard subway station is an overlooked gem in the heart of Astoria. From the…read moreelevated platform there are impressive views of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge still known by many locals as the Triborough Bridge on one side and the Grand Central Parkway on the other. Looking out from up there almost feels like standing on top of a mountain with the traffic moving below and the bridge and roadway stretching into the distance. It is a view that gives you a different perspective on Astoria and the surrounding area. The views alone are worth the price of the subway fare whether one is taking the train or not.

I was definitely glad it looked safer than it used to especially as busy as the area is where the overpass goes. The elevators (spilled coffee inside tho, blecchh) were updated, the ramps were user friendly for wheelchairs etc. The view from the platform was surprisingly beautiful and I'm glad I got a chance to catch it at sunset. I did noticed it looked a little deserted, the station that is, so make sure you are prepared if you get there really late.
