No issues with the store itself, as it has everything you'd expect from an antique store-…read moresilverware, typewriters, records, old McDonald's toys, etc. The challenge is with many of the consignment booth prices. There are many things that are egregiously overpriced. For example, there is a unicycle that appears to have been kept outside and has a flat tire. I checked online and could get the exact same model, brand new, for less than they were charging. I understand that booth owners can charge whatever they like, but just make sure you have your phone with you so you can check if it is a good deal or not!

They don't welcome you in or say goodbye when you leave (even after I said "have a good day!" as I left, they just ignored me) and while shopping they follow you around. While this may seem like a bit of a reach, and maybe other have had better experiences, it just feels that if you are youngish, or look young, they just treat you with no respect. As for the selection, while it is large, almost EVERY booth charges way too much for their stuff, which is frankly a lot of junk, but with "vintage" slapped on it to bump up the price. There are some other consignment stores on Grand with both vintage and handmade stuff which are all better priced and actually have nice staff. It's a shame because at one point I felt this store was a cool place to spend a decent amount of time in, but with the staff, and the fact that "vintage" = expensive, I just don't recommend this place at all.

It's not a big…read moreplace, so it isn't overwhelming but it has a lot of really neat stuff, a "grab bag" if you will, of different things to go through from antique to vintage to homemade. I always find a little something for a birthday or to add to a birthday gift. It's great for teacher's gifts and stocking stuffers at the holidays too. It's my favorite antique shop in Esco and now has regular hours. It's worth a trip out to see what they have in their different booths. And even though it's neat and cute and stylish...it's never snooty or too kitschy. I really like it.

Oh, Escondido, how I love you and your antique and thrift stores…read more Grab Bag is one of many antique stores on Grand Ave. and in Escondido in general, but it's probably my favorite. It's small, run by really nice ladies, and isn't overpriced like at, say, the larger antique mall a few steps away. That said, it is smaller, so finding things is a bit harder. It's definitely a 'grab bag', but there are always a few nice gems there. Lots of old photographs and postcards, lots of knick knacks, and drawers of antique cloths/aprons/hankies/etc. I went and was able to find a nice variety of old pipes and lucky for me, they were all fifty percent off. Buying a sweet old man's pipe for only $12? Hooray! It seems certain days (most days) everything is fifty percent off, but the only downside is that it's not open regularly and hours are a bit sporadic. (I think the owner may have health problems which limit the number of hours open? But I don't quite remember.) Definitely worth a stop by if you're around downtown Escondido and looking for nice old things.

The grounds were just as beautiful as ever. It was nice to see the birds and dogs strolling about as unofficial, friendly ambassadors. We explored the huge antiques barn with our attached numbered clothes pins, which saved us from having to carry our purchases around. The staff is very astute and kindly takes your purchases to place in a bin with a corresponding number of the clothespin behind the counter. It makes the buying experience so convenient & unburdened. There is so much to see and the staff are so friendly and like to share stories. The owner Marlise is very friendly and engaging. Please read her heartwarming blog on the website to discover the journey it took to get where they are today. She's a great writer! It's a story full of sacrifices, determination, conquering, and perseverance. We then walked out to more vendors outdoors. Many of them were so warm & welcoming. We carried on great conversations with many of them. It was interesting to hear their backstories. All that shopping got us famished and we were in luck that Joselle's Filipino Cuisine food truck was there. We ordered pancit, Bistek, rice, and lumpia. It took a bit but the wait was worth it. So fresh & delicious. Please see my separate review on Joselle's here. There were great bargains to be had both indoors and outdoors. We both spent a pretty penny but it's worth it when you can procure unique gifts from some talented artisans. I always love supporting small businesses. Please take the time to visit the old Betty Crocker estate. I'm posting the schedule; they are opened once a month on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They also offer tours and various classes and offer services like massages.

A friend and I visited on a Friday, knowing there was going to be another storm system coming on Saturday and Sunday (good call!). Scattered clouds made it for a pleasant walk outside checking out some vendors and displayed decor, vintage, antique and modern pieces. There were a couple of drink and food trucks. I did get to try a iced London Fog drink, very delicious! The food truck served Filipino food which I did not get to try. But it smelled delicious. After walking around outside (and purchasing a courting chair within minutes of getting there!) we made our way inside the barn which was furnished with plenty of old and some modern items. The inside is very cramped. I saw a person trying to maneuver a wheelchair at the entrance... I don't think they would be able to enjoy looking through the entire place, a lot of tight corners. So please keep that in mind. I liked how the tables and chairs outside that you can sit at while enjoying a bite or taking a breather is for sale. They are all eclectic. I liked their system of retrieving a letter from a vendor and anything you wanted to purchase they took it and placed it in the section of your letter. You did not have to carry everything around. I would love to come back! This is not a paved ground, nor is the parking area. They only area that is cemented is inside the barn. There are a couple areas that you must watch your footing (they have signs) in the barn as well. Adjacent to the Brick N Barn is the Valley Center Historical Society Site of Historic Interest... the Clark House (1883) Betty Crocker House (1941). Although the home is occupied you can walk on the premises (using your inside voice). There are peacocks (including a white peacock!) turkey's and other birds.
