This place is amazing to come to. Particularly for me, over the years, closer to the dusk hour to walk the pier and boardwalk. The ambiance is spectacular especially when the sky has clementine colors and the pier is all lit up. And is it me...the closer you get to the boarder the rolled tacos get that much better?! I've always enjoyed every outing here. Grab an ice cream! And sit on the surf board style benches. Lots of cool art pieces to look at in the area too. I cherish all my meet ups with friends and family here. *Once upon a time while collecting shells the ocean (or seaweed) decided to trade unbeknownst to me and took a gemstone from a ring of mine. Extending 1,491 feet, with a water depth of up to 20 feet, this pier is known as a prime fishing locale for many locals and tourists alike. Anyone can stroll down towards the end of the pier and enjoy a meal at The Fish Cafe, we did not do that, but we did walk around the beginning of the wooden structure. On a clear day, if you are at the very end of the pier and look south, you might be able to see landmarks and portions of Mexican landscape. read more

Very busy pier with lots of entertainment. Lots of different foods close by. It's a nice bike ride from Coronado. Breweries close by.

It was my families first visit. The pier is in good shape, it's a nice walk with a beautiful view of the ocean and beach. Lots of people fishing off the pier. There is a restaurant at the end of the pier. We paid $2 for parking. They have bathrooms and are near small shops and an ice cream parlor. read more

I had never been there until Friday, I live close to Oceanside pier and this is like 45 miles away so don't get down there very often. Nice pier and plenty of free parking on a Friday afternoon, and the free parking is easy walking distance. There are shops and restaurants only a few feet away so quite convenient and things to do all around. The pier is nice and the surrounding beach was nicely kept, I didn't see any trash or anything that would detract from visiting. Before you go out on the pier, there is a colorful sculpture that says Imperial Beach which lends itself nicely to a photo opp. If you are nearby and need a beach with a pier I recommend trying it out. read more

The Imperial Beach Pier is the pier which is furthest south in the state of California.  It's only a short distance from the border with Mexico.  Tip: Due to its proximity to Tijuana, the water here is sometimes contaminated with sewage, so caution is advised The Pier (which is built in the shape of an arrow) runs for just under 2000 feet on a long, sandy beach.  I've found it pleasant to walk along the wooden boards to the end, where you'll find a place with tables that sells drinks and food.  Given that it's a pier, you will almost always find fisherman here. read more

Less traffic and less sunny than the other beaches on a hot day, this place always bring back my memories during the grunions run when I came here with friends to catch them fishes jumping on the sand to lay eggs under the bridge pier; on other occasions I would be on top of the bridge fishing late at night with a group of people, we mostly caught mackerel, bay rays and California moray, it was the fun time to revisit while taking my relatives here for an evening walk. read more

Imperial Beach or IB is an A-Ok beach to go to for stunning views into the Pacific Ocean or maybe fish on the pier, but unfortunately, this beach is not swimable. We came here to take a trip down south to visit IB and enjoy the lovely scenery it has to offer. This beach is literally 5 exits away from the border of Mexico, and from the pier, you can see the mountains of Mexico and the city. The pier is a great place to go to for some free pier fishing, and you will see many locals doing this. The pier stretches out 1490 ft, and at the end, it has a small seafood restaurant. You can order some food and drinks. From the right side of the pier, you can oversee the city of San Diego and Coronado Bridge, and from the left side, stands Tijuana, Mexico. The waves are high and rigid while the water is a nice teal blue. The sand is brown, and there are beach houses all along the waterfront. Unfortunately, no swimming is allowed here, and there are signs posted up stating that no one is allowed in the ocean due to sewage contamination. Along the beach coast, there are many breweries and restaurants and also a small playground for the kids. There is also a small exercise fitness center as well. A-OK beach to go to if you don't plan on swimming since it isn't allowed. Please come here and walk on the pier that stretches nearly 1500 feet into the ocean and grab your lawn chairs and poles, and get some fishing done. Parking is available on the sides of the streets and there is also a small parking lot for cars too. read more

Walking along the pier, there's really nowhere to sit as many people line the edges fishing for smelt and other small fish. Pups allowed on leashes. Imperial Beach Pier is an awesome spot to visit. It is the southwestern-most point in the continental United States. There is a mural at the end painted on a wall where you can take a cool pic showing that you were here. While on the pier, I had a close encounter with a tame brown pelican which I also got pictures of . People enjoy fishing here and surfing in the area as well. There are many catchy little signs on the pier with ocean/beach-related sayings and puns to read as you walk to the end. There is also a good ice cream shop and a souvenir shop at the beginning. Despite recent warnings about sewage in the area, there was no stench in the air and the water looked beautiful and clear. As you look towards the south, you can see the border fence and Tijuana. When you turn and look towards the north you can see the San Diego skyline and the Coronado Bridge. I enjoyed our brief visit to the area and definitely want to go back to explore more. read more

I've never really taken the time to explore IB and I got here early enough to avoid parking issues. Grabbed a 2 hour spot near the entrance to the pier. What a great view even when it had the gloomy gray marine layer. I need to come out here more often. Chill place. read more

WARNING: The water on the beach is highly toxic!!! The color of the water by the beach is a sludgy green and delineated by blue color water from a short distance away farther to the ocean. There are signs from the health department warning not to swim in the water. I've been to 10+ beaches across the California coast, many of which are considered unswimmable; but, have never seen anything like this before. Some people even report the water as being "smelly"; but, I personally did not notice this. Supposedly, the pollution is due to sewage from neighboring Tijuana. Toxic water aside, the sand is not good either. A lot of the beach is pebbly, there are plenty of beach flies, and there are black streaks in the sand. Boardwalk/Attractions: The beach has a fun abstract "surfboard" motif with a good number of sculptures. There are plenty of restaurants nearby as well as multiple parks. The parks are new and clean and feature a playground, basketball court, and a fun gymnastics workout area. Parking: There is parking nearby for $2 for 8 hours. There is also free street parking available. Crowd: The beach had a good amount of people on a March, Sunday morning. It was not a lot of people for the area relative to the population density but a lot of people relative to the quality of the coast. Verdict: Overall, I do not recommend being on or near this beach over the long term if you are the health conscious type due to the low water quality. The city did the best out of a bad situation and nearby attractions (parks, art/decor, shopping) are worth visiting, though. read more

Like to give it more then 4 stars but the fact that if I go swimming near the pier or walk in the water on certain days I might grow an extra nipple or toe or lose the little hair I got left & that is a concern. The reason is, you'll see a sign there sometimes saying it's not swimmable because of the pollution from the TJ River.You also might see a few tweekers here on bikes on the Pier smiling & being nice but you never know so just hold your belongings close to you. But other then that it's a chill little Pier/beach. The locals here are really nice & love to share tips on fishing, it's mainly older Asians & Mexicans. You can peacefully fish there, have a beer a smoke & no one trips on you as long as your cool.Fish really bite there, if you catch one just give it to one of the fisherman, they'll eat it later or you can throw it back in. They have a little ice cream store near the pier so if you bring the kids for a nice walk with the dog you can take them for ice cream. I visit this pier as much as I can, I have an emotional connection to it due to my little brother's ashes being spread over this pier. So me & my fam sometimes come at night have a drink, smoke & tell stories of my brother. I will continue to come & enjoy this Pier, so if you see me say hi & I'll share a beer/smoke with you & we'll share some good vibes. See you soon IB Pier & continue to RIP little brother. read more

Nice beach!! Traveled all the way from Arizona just for a beach for our kids! & we liked it! We stopped at the dollar store and got beach toys and gear and my kids had a blast running around! Even Seen lifeguards on duty! Guys driving around (maybe security) keeping the beach clean from garbage and junk! Even found close parking less than a 5 min walk! The water is absolutely freezing, so we didn't stay long. but we will definitely be back! & lots of restaurants nearby! read more

This pier is awesome from a distance or walking right on it. Situated on Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach, it's the center of where many people meet up and many activities take place. Every Friday there is a farmers market just in front of the pier. There is a nice coffee and ice cream place and small beach toy store in front as well. The beginning of the pier is clean and there is no fishing allowed due to surfers. It's fun to watch the surfers as you walk on the pier. You can try and catch fish at the later 1/2 of the pier. There is a small restaurant at the end of the pier that serves tacos and burritos. It gets crowded at the end due to the fisherman. The view is wonderful on the pier to view the Imperial Beach coastline. I also enjoy walking on the beach and seeing the pier from down below. I look forward to return!! read more

I went here with my husband and his friend a few weeks ago to watch the sunset. The views in this place is just so amazing! While you walk towards the end of the pier, you will see some people fishing. Maybe I could also try to go fishing here one day! There is a restaurant at the end of the pier where you can dine in but if you just want to enjoy the view and sea breeze, it's fine too. You can come here for free but the parking is quite hard. There are some free parking spaces around the area and there are paid parking spaces too. If you get hungry, you can easily find spots to buy food! It's all around the area. If you're interested to visit the IMPERIAL BEACH PIER, go do it cause it is definitely WORTH IT! read more

A great place to spend the 4th of July. Plenty of sandy beach, friendly families, barbecues allowed, pop up tents everywhere. Walking the pier -- the most southwesterly pier in the United States -- late at night is such a treat. You can see downtown San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico clearly, all at once. After the massive crowds have vacated the pier, having arrived to watch the sunset, it turns into a most amazing serene and meditative place. Often, fishermen will be casting their lines for surf perch, corbina, yellowfin, halibut and spotfin croaker well into the evening, as the pier is free to use and open until 10 p.m. It is fairly well lit in the evening and opens again at 5 a.m. There is a set of bathrooms on the pier, toward the end. The pier also has a number of benches and cleaning stations. And Tin Fish, a restaurant specializing in seafood, is also located at the pier's end. Toward the start of the pier is the Portwood Pier Plaza, a popular meeting place at the foot of the pier, and it is the site of community events that appear to happen on the regular. There are a few shops for eats there, too. Parking can be somewhat of a challenge. I recommend parking a couple of blocks away for a trek in, though there is a paid lot right out front. read more

Spent a really beautiful afternoon walking around and taking in the sights. Came here with our friend and I'm sure his pictures are way better than mine as he possesses some really nice camera lenses and looks like he knows his way around a camera. Can't wait to see them! Here's just a short list of the most interesting facts I've found about Imperial Beach: The most southwesterly city in the continental United States. Home to the annual Sun & Sea Festival, featuring the famous Sandcastle building competition and a plethora of additional activities spanning over a few days time once a year. Three and a half miles of coastline including the big wave break famously called Tijuana Sloughs. Home to 370 species of birds. So as you can imagine, birdwatching is a year around activity. Over 4,000 acres of protected wildlife and native vegetation habitats. A few places to go bird watching in Imperial Beach; Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge, Dairy Mart Pond, Border field State Park and San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Definitely will be doing more bird watching in this area. read more

IB pier is one of my fave pier in Town. I've been here many times and we used to live in this area five years ago. It's a homey feel little town family friendly, very laid back;) - the crowd here is mix of locals and tourists. It's a great spot to watch people fishing, the surfers, wake boarders and of course the ocean, and beautiful sunset. I love to take pictures and stroll, brisk walking and chasing my kids and the birds and feel the lovely breeze of the ocean. You can also stroll all the way to the end and look for Dolphins and enjoy fresh seafood and ocean views at the Tin Fish restaurant. They also have a pier plaza with ice cream shops, gifts shops and local dining. and children's playground.bring your kiddos and the whole family ;) wink;) I love the tall colorful surfboard shaped arches in the plaza and Palm trees Check my photos :) Parking is only $2.00. Must visit Imperial beach or IB there are lots of things to do here. I love it here and it's not too crowded like PB and OB. Good place to watch the sunset. It's about 15 mins off 405 if you happen to be in your way to the border or heading back from Las Americas outlets. Street parking but plenty to be found. The pier is about 100 years long and 20 feet wide. Plenty of people fishing and you can watch the surfers below. An ice cream shop at the street entrance. We have been to IB pier soooo many times. It's the closest beach to where we live so hey why not come and play around in IB. This beach is so South Bay LOL. It's a tiny little hipster community with people always moving around either day or night. There are so many restaurants and cool little hot spots to check out while your on your way walking towards the pier. Once you get to the actual structure it's awesome it's actual wood and it does feel old skool. I like walking on the pier when the little restaurant is open because once you go to the back you get to see all the people fishing and it's a little low key spot. Great for picture opportunities of the sunset ! Today we saw 3 dolphins swimming around, awesome surfs and we saw all these birds hunt for food it was mesmerizing. So get out there South Bay and spend time at the IB pier Im sure you don't regret it :) read more

It's not as ghetto as I thought it'll be...since it's the closest beach to the border. I honestly thought it'll be much dirtier though. The water isn't the best (compared to other SD beaches). I overheard someone said don't go in the water because it's a run off from TJ or something. Probably not true but it's pretty close to the border. It's cool, I don't go in Cali waters just cuz it's so cold and dirty. Bathrooms were constantly kept up to maintenance. Pretty nice pier to my surprise. Very crowded on a Saturday though... And hard to find parking. But the entrance to the pier is very cool! read more

IB is NOT ok. Everything you need to know about IB can be learned from watching the old HBO series "John from Cincinnati". Shot in Imperial Beach, it's often regarded as one of the worst HBO shows every made. It only lasted one season before being canceled. It's not like HBO is picky or anything, how many terrible seasons of True Blood were made again? It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Imperial Beach is one of the worst looking beach cities in California. Mostly consisting of small tacky houses with chain linked fencing, and nothing to attract tourists. The people and local government that live and govern here are OKAY keeping IB in the 80's. They don't want to improve, develop, clean things up. Just try remodeling a house here and you'll how difficult it is to make improvements. The Beach - This beach is often closed after rain storms due to sewage-contaminated water from the Tijuana river overflowing. When clean, it not a bad beach and there are often events like Sandcastle events and surfing contents during the year. If there is one thing that IB can hang its hat on is the updated pier area. Note that there isn't much there, no outdoor restaurants, no real beach businesses, no clean / affordable hotels, no Boardwalk, but they do have a nice kids spring rocker animal park. But wait, there's more! Mosquitos! Because of the proximity to a large estuary and the Tijuana river/sewer there are endless mosquitos attacking you in the evening. So, leave early if you're spending the day at the beach. - When the city slogan is "IB is OK" you know the bar is set low.. - Look, this is the cheapest beach front property in California. read more
