None compare to the Thuringer Bratwurst, native to the province of Thuringia. Grill Teufel ("Devil's Grill") makes the best of the best: just a little spicy and served extra long on a tiny little bun. You can top it with either ketchup or mustard ("Senf"). There are a few stands in Jena, Weimar and Apolda. Chasing a Grill Teufel bratwurst with a dark lager (from the local breweries) is fantastic.

I do find food in Germany on the saltier side and was presently surprised to find my red cabbage and duck stuff bread perfectly seasoned and not too salty. The sour cream topping, along with the scallions and red peppers were a perfect touch to a great lunch. Would definitely come back the next time I visit Germany. Do note that there are only two tables inside Handbrotzeit. So if you're there with a large group or during rush hour, you may be hard pressed to find a seat. However, there are tables and seats outside if you're brave enough to sit out in the cold during the winter season.

Walking around Erfurt to look for a lunch place and stumbled across this place. Although they did…read morenot speak English, they were very nice and worked with me through hand gestures. I ordered the lamb skewers and a coffee. The coffee comes from an automated machine so maybe not the freshest or best you can find. However, I found the food makes up for it by far. The lamb was very well seasoned and cooked to perfection. There is something great about being able to see your meal cooked right in front of you. The peppers added the right amount of heat to the meat. Definitely a great find on a random walk to find food!

Every meat temp I've ever had here was on point. The char on the outside is beautiful. The quality of the meat is evident even before it's cooked, you can see it right in the case. Beer selection could be better, if these guys got some nice craft beer in there, it would really elevate the whole place. But really, when your meat is that good, it can be forgiven. The ambiance is awesome, really casual, looks like the place used to be an old stable. Benches, tables, and bar seating make everything no frills casual, in the best way. All in all, one of my favorite spots in Erfurt.
