Now, I feel bad for giving this place only two stars. So I want to point out this review is based…read moreon my subjective experience, that her than how everyone may enjoy the hostel. The positive: this hostel is immaculately clean, very new and almost like a hotel. The staff are so lovely. Good location. Additional experiences. I arrived to a work site as things were being finished/fixed in the hostel. The tradesperson, after shouting for someone who worked there, called a member of staff for me who then arranged my key and room. Linen, a necessity for a backpacker generally, was extra. Got into my room. Very small hotel box room, with a chair and table so small people couldn't actually sit at it, one set of bunks and one single bed crammed in. This room, would be cosy with one bed. But 3 and superfluous furniture.. There was barely enough room on the floor to put bags. After the other two guests arrived, moving was a hazard. The communal spaces were cold, Spartan and echo-y. Rarely members of staff were present at reception. They place up a sign saying to call if you need anything any they'll come immediately. But, as a traveller, it's mr uncommon not to have a phone. And skype-calling may be an impossibility, with the Internet that constantly failed while I was there. All in all, it's hard to complain because it was.. Nice. In a weird way. It's pretty. It's clean. But, I won't stay here again. It's not the right place for me. The space feels like a hotel with too many beds put in. Little to no soul and for €36 for two nights, not really worth it when you compare it with other options. Maybe if you have a private room and treat it as a cheap hotel, you'd have a better experience.

Why 4 stars and not 5? We were hit with a bill for two nights parking at 30 Euro per night. When booking on the Holiday Inn website, one is asked to add breakfast for max 2 people at 15 Euro. Why does the website not ask if one is interested in a parking space at 30 Euro per night? This would make it very clear that the parking at the hotel is not free. Still, I highly recommend the Holiday Inn in Zwickau.

They know the good places, no matter how remote! I had Sauerbraten with Kloese with Semmel and green beans. The quality was excellent. There was nothing in the meat serving except first quality meat (not a trace of fat or gristle). Everything tasted delicious and the portions were large. Apparently this Gasthof has been in business for decades and is well-known by the people in the area, and at certain times it is quite busy. The Erzgebirge is beautiful, and this place is a great find. The Erzgebirge is known for their woodcarvings and the Gasthof Giegegruen is a museum of large carved figurines, some with multiple figures, and ceiling lights. My host knew of my interest, and since we were there in the middle of the afternoon, we made a tour of the entire facility to see the carvings. (My host pointed out that you can see where the wood was laminated in order to get a piece of wood large enough for the figurines. My host said using laminated wood was not characteristic of older Erzgebirge carvings. These are mostly large pieces, however, so I understand why they would use wood glued together before doing the carvings.. The carvings are skillfully done and a treat to see, especially such a large collection.) Do plan to visit the upstair, large rooms. The small buildings behind the Gasthof are exhibits of historic rooms, including a bakery and home arts. The animated baker and his son sing and tell about baking. The Disneyland-like technology is rather amazing given the location of the Gasthof. I speak enough German to get by, and you would need some German verbal skill in order to get the most out of the experience. We went back later in the day for ice cream sundaes, another great reason to visit the Gasthof! If visiting the Erzgebirge, which I highly recommend, the Gasthof Giegengruen is a MUST visit!

The hotel is located on Karl Liebknecht Straße, which is south of the city center, but easily within walking distance. I did not use any public transportation or taxis at all during this trip except to get to the airport. I was able to walk everywhere easily while staying at this hotel. However, if you are not a big walker please note it is maybe a 20 minute walk from the hotel to the city center where most of the attractions are. The staff was very friendly and helpful and there were no problems either at check in or check out. The hotel was very clean and seemed kind of modern looking. Rooms were small, but I would say they were slightly larger than what I would normally get in a German hotel for the price I was paying (from 44 to 54 Euros a night). This price is excellent for what you get here. The breakfast is an extra 11 Euros per night. I got the breakfast and it was worth it. It was pretty much the standard German breakfast with a nice selection of fresh rolls, cheese, cold cuts, and eggs. They did have scrambled eggs, which you don't see everywhere. The only real problem I would say with the hotel was that the wifi did not have the greatest signal or strength, and required you to re-logon every time you started a new session on your device. The television was good quality with many channels provided, with some in various non-German languages. The area directly around the hotel is great. There are loads of very nice cafes, restaurants, and bars right on Karl Liebknecht Straße. There's also an Aldi supermarket about a block away. The room had a little refrigerator, which was nice to store a few items I got from he store.
