I came to Sicily for the first time, on vacation with my boyfriend and his family. We stayed in Il Principe Hotel from August 4 -7th, and had very little to complain about. Our room had a balcony, the AC worked well, and the complementary breakfast in the morning was decent for Sicilian standards. We toured about 10 different cities in Sicily before returning to Catania for the last night of our "Sicilian Secrets" tour. On our last night back at this hotel, they gave us room #326, which had an air conditioner that made a loud rattling noise - similar to when your car is about to break down. We went downstairs to ask for our room to be changed, and the female receptionist by the name of Carmen (dark hair, in her late 40s), stated that there was absolutely nothing they could do for us, and refused to change our rooms because there were "no other rooms available". We asked to speak to a manager, and they refused to let us speak to one. So we ended up switching rooms with another family member, who willingly gave up their room for us. When we got to this room (#402) - there were two small beds pushed together. We told them we wanted one king sized bed, not two double beds - and they did not accommodate us. The receptionist even called the travel agent from our tour to complain about us complaining. Who does that?? When we got tired of trying to get a better room, I decided to get into the shower - mind you, this is all happening at 8:30pm. As I was showering, the hotel decided to automatically shut off all the lights in the bathroom, and proceeded to tell us that they have now decided to give us another room that apparently they "did not have" an hour ago. In pitch darkness, I had to get out of the shower, get dressed, and pack up my stuff to move to a room on another floor. The only reason this hotel gets one star is because there was one employee by the name of Michelangelo who was extremely helpful, and tried his best to get us into a better room. He was so patient with us, and cared a lot about us having an enjoyable stay at this hotel... and he wasn't even the manager! But as for the receptionist, she was terrible and should probably get fired. I didn't realize how poor customer service at a hotel can be until I came here. How this hotel has such good ratings is beyond me. I am currently sitting inside my room, in Il Principe hotel, during my 8th night in Sicily (4th night in this hotel) just to say how completely I satisfied I am with this hotel. Will not recommend to anyone. read more
