    Biscotti at Il Grillo Moro

While staying in a beautiful home in the countryside about 15 minutes from downtown Siena, Il Grillo Moro was recommended to us by our VRBO hostess. The restaurant and inn are tucked away in the countryside. Arriving around 8pm, we came across the establishment among a wide expanse of dark, open fields. Parking is behind a tall hedgerow and you follow a path to the interestingly lit restaurant and inn. Our VRBO hostess had obviously called ahead as we were greeted loudly and warmly by the owner, Filippo. A bear of a man, Filippo cheerfully talked to us about the restaurant and what to expect before leading us to our table. Once at our table for a few minutes, Filippo came back to walk us through the menu. It was quickly settled that we'd go with his small plate suggestions, leading up to steak as our main course. Our waitress brought out a Flintstone-sized T-bone to show us what we had in store. Soon after, the small plates started to appear. These included a chopping board of wild boar, white beans with rabbit, raw chopped beef and a (could not be large enough) plate of gnocchi in a cream sauce with bacon and bread crumbs. Everything was delicious, but the gnocchi was ridiculous. My grandmother made outstanding gnocchi and these put hers to shame (sorry, Mommom). Pillowy and covered in a delicious cream sauce with bacon, this dish makes you forget all table manners and has you guarding your plate with a forearm while you shovel these nuggets in your face (growling at anyone who gets close). It was a tough act to follow and the steak did not disappoint. From the presentation (cut off the bone with the 'T' bone standing on its head), to being perfectly cooked (rare) to the delicious flavor this is one of the best steaks you will ever eat. Four grown men shared this steak. We also got a few sides -- the standout were the roasted potatoes. Treat yourself like a king or queen and include plans for a feast at Il Grillo Moro in your visit to Siena. In all aspects (ambiance, staff, food and owner) this place is fantastic.

The food, service and ambience were truly fabulous!!! The restaurant is part of a country hotel/B&B, but separate. Located in old stone building, the restaurant is fairly large, open and charming. Besides a standard menu they also offer a piatti de giorno ( plates of the day). Besides starting with bruschetta, we asked the owner to make recommendations and went with those. Hubby and I shared the Gnocchi special, Maltagliati special and a steak (yes, we were hungry as we hadn't eaten in over 12 hours). We topped it off by sharing a Panicotta with caramel sauce for dessert accompanied by some limoncello. With dinner, We chose to try some of the local Tuscan beer, Fedora brewed by Birre Artigianale. Very good beer. By 9 pm the restaurant was packed and when we left at about 10:30 pm, people were still coming in! Make sure to make reservations!

Taverna di San Giuseppe is a very well oiled machine. Reservations are a must (recommend booking…read morethrough your hotel/walking in and requesting a reservation for next day) but the atmosphere is well worth it. Every server is serving you and the owners are incredibly attentive. Meals are stepped out in a way that has you receiving each dish with ample time to enjoy. The tiramisu was to die for and the invitation to explore the wine cellar afterwards was a treat. Well worth it!!

Taverna di San Giuseppe was a disappointing meal for us, especially in a city with so many great…read moredining options. We ended up here by mistake (confused it with another spot), and unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. The restaurant fills up with reservations for two seatings, and from the moment we sat down the pace felt rushed. We ordered drinks and a starter while deciding on the rest, but multiple staff members kept coming by trying to take our full order. It felt like they were pushing to move things along quickly. There were a couple positives. The chicken livers to start were quite tasty and something we didn't see often on other menus. The primi were underwhelming. The pasta didn't taste fresh like many other trattorias in Siena, and the dishes overall were just average. The lasagna in particular was mushy, and the sauces didn't stand out. The secondi were slightly better -- pork ribs, Barolo-braised beef, and a "small chicken" -- but still nothing that justified the higher prices. They do have an underground wine cellar built into a cave, which is interesting to see, but there are other places in Siena with much larger and more impressive cellar spaces. Also worth noting, they add a "10% tax" charge rather than the typical €2 coperto per person. Overall, a rushed and fairly mediocre meal at a higher price point. With so many better places to eat in Siena, this is one I'd skip.
