"A for effort"... Ok, I love their menu....technically... I like that they offer things like fried sardines, zucchini fritti, bacaloa spread... So hooray for the menu! But the execution....oy vey! Seriously, when you have to add salt...a generous amount of salt....to a bacalao spread, something is seriously wrong! With a squeeze of lemon the spread became reminiscent of salted cod fish. Basically I had to keep the salt grind close at hand cause everything was severely under seasoned. The zucchini fritti were limb and topped with some bland grated unmelted dutch cheese. Why not Parmesan? Or Pecorino? The whole dinner was sad really. The semifreddo was rock solid frozen. Staff was uncustomary friendly, nothing but good intentions. So I really wanted this to be good! But the only things that were remotely decent were the lamb skewers. After a sprinkling of salt of course... And the sardines, perhaps. I'm baffled at why people are raving about this place on other review sites. Cockamamie! It hurts me to do this, but....okay, so 1 star for introducing me to Monkey 47 gin served with Fentimans tonic. And an A, not for effort but for intention. That's all I can squeeze out of this place though. That and a slice of lemon...and a sprinkle of salt. Scheiße...

Great food, a bit pricey. The water was super expensive, order tap water.

I had the good fortune of being the one and only patron for the first hour and I sat and talked to the owner, Pieter. This place just has that authentic Irish feel to it. I actually walked a half a mile past another Irish pub that was closer to my hotel to get to this one. Maastricht does not have as much exposure to Yelp, so I actually had to look for a recommendation on another site. That is exactly why I am reviewing this restaurant. Yelpers need to know this place! I enjoyed a Smithwick's on tap. The beer was extremely cold, and the pint was a perfect pour! However, the biggest draw for me was the fish and chips. They are absolutely delicious! The fish is a rather large piece, done right in beer batter. It is also extremely flaky and I consider this a good thing! The pub is also known to be a good place to watch European football. The TVs are hooked up to sound and broadcast in HD. Whether you're looking for a good pint, good food or just to enjoy a football game, this is your place. And let Pieter know that Craig from Yelp sent you!

We've been in Irish Bars all over the world. This one is special. For one thing, it's clean. I mean *really* clean. It's really nicely furnished and decorated. The place has sort of an "upscale" ambiance, but retains the laid back feeling you expect from an Irish Pub. The food was terrific. We enjoyed large portions and the exceptional presentation. Prices were reasonable and the service was great. In short, this isn't your run of the mill Irish Pub. I absolutely recommend you check it out.

In Den Ouden Vogelstruys is a brown cafe with various claims to historical permanence. Take your pick 1700's...1800's...there's even a canon ball stuck in the outside facade labeled 1670. There are a half-dozen bars on this block all beckoning for your hard earned (or recently converted euros). I have sampled them all and In Den Ouden is by far my cuppa. This time I was not alone and wanted to get a second opinion. Kate was not disappointed. We ordered the 4 cheese plate (Limburger, Brie, goat cheese and bleu). Two wedges of each along with a French roll, 4 slices of fruit and nut bread, apple syrup and a salad of grapes, walnuts and rocket all for $13.50. We accompanied this with her local herbed liqueur coffee and my Le Trapp. We had anticipated this to be a simple bar snack but in fact turned into our lunch of the day. We in particular loved the paring of the apple syrup over the bleu cheese and the Brie on the fruit/nut bread. All was yummy and beautifully presented. This was a perfect meal to linger over and be thankful for your blessings. We will come back.
