Dr. Barbara H. Volk was my mother's doctor for more than 30 years. She knew my mom well. When my…read moremom entered her office last fall using a walker because of intense back pain (my mom, 79, lived independently and did not ever use a walker), Dr. Volk touched my mom's spine, deduced there was no fracture and sent her away with directions to switch from Advil to Tylenol and rest. My mother was a paraplegic soon thereafter because without ordering any imaging, Dr. Volk missed a cancerous tumor pressing on my mother's upper spine, which had already broken multiple vertebrae. X-rays can see tumors and broken vertebrae. Dr. Volk's fingers cannot. Dr. Volk told me her office does not have access to quick x-rays and radiologists to read them like they formerly did. When asked why she didn't send my mom to an urgent care/quick clinic or even an orthopedic walk-in clinic, which is near her office, she did not have a good answer. Any of these places could have done x-rays and had them read quickly. Dr. Volk's lack of action and care for my mother accelerated my mother's death and led to my mother living in pain for the weeks before she died. Dr. Volk's ways are antiquated, and she harmed my mother. Do not go to this doctor. If your family members go to this doctor, read this to them and tell them to switch practices. My mom's death will not be in vain.
