The place is small & cozy just enough space for a nice comfortable meal music was everything while waiting I dance in my chair while I wait for the food which came out hot and fresh good service friendly conversation price is fair for what you get I didn't give 5 stars because the person who took the order & seated us was not welcoming she seemed to be pre occupied but the person who took over was he was friendly and polite

This was a first time in for us. It was a really clean restaurant that smelled of wonderful food. The service was good and somewhat fast considering we came in before a big rush. The building is somewhat small for inside eating so lots of people were picking you their food to go. The food was wonderful and seasoned very nicely. A place I will have to go back to soon. Nice little hidden gem. When we left there was a gentleman selling koolaid pickles so we stocked up on some good pickles to take home. I would have given this place 5 stars but the waiter didn't understand all the assignment. When asked to bring some strained black eyed pea juice with no black eyed peas he brought a to go container with some sips in it and brought a bit more with equal parts black eyed peas and juice. The juice was for someone on a full liquid diet. They left hungry but still satisfied and grateful with what they got. They stayed busy and the food was great so I hope to see them expand someday. I will be back for sure.

I had a very disappointing experience with Ida Mae's Restaurant in Waxahachie and feel the public should be aware. I placed an online order through their website for the following: Two (2) 3-piece fried chicken wing dinners with two sides each, priced at $9.99 each as advertised online One (1) catfish dinner Shortly after submitting my order, I received a phone call from a representative stating that I had been undercharged. I was told the online price was an error and that the wings were actually supposed to be $17.99 each, not the price listed on their own website. They wanted to recharge me an additional amount for a price that was not advertised online. I was honestly shocked. I paid exactly what their website reflected at the time of purchase. After speaking with a manager, I was told I had only two options: pay the upcharge or receive a full refund. I chose the refund. What was most disappointing is that the restaurant did not honor their advertised price, even though the mistake was theirs--not mine. I did not argue or request they honor the price because I don't feel comfortable having food prepared when there is already a disagreement or questionable business practice involved. As a result, I've placed Ida Mae's on my "do not dine" list. I believe in fair and honest business practices, and this experience fell short of that standard.

Friendly service, nice facility, and food I will think about for the rest of my life. Black eyed peas of perfection, collard greens melting into the flavor of fried catfish, and candied yams paired with bites of banana pudding cheesecake. Skip the max and cheese but indulge in the above! Can't wait to come back!

If you're reading this review and looking for some good food, priced right and paired with friendly customer service you've found it. Stop looking right now and head on over to Ida Mae's in Waxahatchie. The food was hot and incredibly delicious. My husband had their smothered pork chops and I ordered the fried catfish they were both 5 stars entrees and very generous portions. Satisfaction guaranteed! Treat yourself or cheat yourself!

The decor is very minimal, but one wall completely covered in customer signatures honestly adds a nice personal vibe to the place. Ordering happens at the register tucked into the back corner, so when there's a line it cuts right past some of the tables. Definitely close quarters while people are eating, but it somehow still fits the character of the place. The gentleman taking orders was friendly, just not overly talkative. The lady who brought our food out was very polite and welcoming though, which I appreciated. Overall, the service was okay. Our food took about 10-15 minutes to come out, which felt a little long considering it didn't appear very busy other than one larger party already seated when we arrived. To be fair, we couldn't see what was happening in the kitchen. The only real frustrating part was waiting close to another 10 minutes for a to-go container after asking a few times. As for the food, I'd say it landed somewhere in the average range for Texas BBQ. Nothing was outright bad, but nothing really blew me away either. I ordered the loaded baked potato topped with brisket, link, two pork ribs, all the traditional baked potato toppings, and their spicy BBQ sauce. First off, the potato itself was fantastic. Huge, perfectly tender, and honestly exactly what a baked potato should be. The toppings were fresh and plentiful -- butter, cheese, sour cream, bacon pieces -- and it could have stood on its own as a solid meal even before adding the meats. The brisket was over chopped, which personally isn't my favorite style at a BBQ joint. I usually feel like finely chopped brisket loses some of the texture and full smoke flavor you get from sliced or a coarse chopped brisket cut to order. It stayed moist, but I really didn't pick up much smoke flavor from it. The link was unfortunately overcooked and dried out. The casing had tightened around the meat, and even sliced up it just didn't have much juice left in it. The ribs were probably the weakest part for me. They were on the smaller side, dry, and pretty tough with the meat cooked down close to the bone. Now with all of that said, the seasoning on the meats was excellent. Bold flavor across everything, and the spicy BBQ sauce was absolutely on point. I just wish the meats themselves had a little more life and moisture to match how good the seasoning tasted. Overall, everything felt pretty average to slightly below average for me, especially by Texas BBQ standards. On the positive side, the prices were actually very reasonable considering how expensive meat has become these days. I'd still come back again because I'd like to try some of the meats individually and let them stand on their own without being loaded onto a baked potato. There's definitely flavor here -- I just think the execution was a little inconsistent during this visit.

I expected to be able to sit down inside with my family and was pretty disappointed that the entire sitting area was blocked off and they're only allowing to go and take out orders. I waited about 35 minutes for two plates of food and spent $71 which I thought was way toooo pricey for just two plates. The soulful bowl with brisket was okay, the brisket wasn't super flavorful, the mac & cheese was a bit too salty and I had high hopes for the yams but they were pretty dry. The catfish and shrimp plate was also below expectations as the shrimp batter was falling off (not fried long enough) and the catfish was a bit fishy. Also I had to beg for cocktail and tartar sauce and got a little attitude when I asked for them. All around not the best experience and don't think I'll be making it back.

As another review said, do not let the looks of this place dissuade you. Mr. Halliburton was such a nice gentleman and a great cook. He patiently told us what our options were and served us immediately. One of our friends was hesitant to dine here, but contentedly admitted that she was wrong to judge the food based on how the establishment looked. Among our group of 6 we ordered: chicken, brisket, Mac and cheese, collard greens, potato salad, and black eyed peas. Everything satisfied our soul food cravings. There is no indoor seating, but a covered patio with several patio tables and chairs. There are comfortable cushions to put on the seats. Mr. H. even placed his speakers outside and turned on some music for us while we dined. It's not fancy, but the service is great, food is delicious, and you'll make a new friend in Mr. Halliburton. The smoke from the kitchen basically consumed the dining area and was very irritating. It eventually dissipated after a while, but I wouldn't recommend infants in this environment. After our party was seated, it took 15-20 min before our waiter greeted us and provided water; that was a bit annoying. After we got our orders in, things were smooth sailing from there. We were a large party and our waiter did a pretty good job at managing us and all of our requests. Food: they do not waste time bringing the food out. Most of our orders came out within 10 minutes! I ordered the Short Rib (unfortunately not pictured). It was hot, tender, and seasoned well....very good. It came on a bed of rice and some type of sauce. I was not a fan of either. The rice seemed uncooked and the sauce was too much and very liquid. It drowned the rice and practically made it soupy. I would have been fine with just the short rib. I also ordered a side of black eyed peas... also not a fan. It was undercooked and I didn't love whatever seasoning was used to prepare it. Other items I tried: Fries, Cornbread, Yams, and Soul Rolls. These were all tasty, specifically the soul roll. It came out crispy, hot, and stuff proportionately. I could take every bit of what was inside. It's definitely a must try.

The menu prices could be adjusted downward but it was a nice experience. I'd recommend if you're in the mood for soul food. The sweet potato cornbread was the best!
