Ichiban and I have a funny history. Let me explain: I was born in Rapid City and spent half my childhood there. When I was maybe 5 or 6, I went to Ichiban for the first time with my dad and his friend. My dad used to come here a few times every week when we lived here- he even knew the owner and was well acquainted. But, I was a young American kid, trying sushi, which is a very hit or miss cuisine as it is. I hated it, and I remember trying an ice cream they had there (green tea I think), and it was a terrible experience. My 5 year old self never wanted to come back. Now, being a mature 20 year old (sometimes), I have developed quite a liking/ obsession with sushi. For Easter I was planning to see my family that still lives in Rapid City, so I wanted to go back to Ichiban to try and reverse my bad memories of dining there. This didn't turn out to be quite as glamorous of a turn around as I had hoped. Ichiban is a very casual Thai & sushi place, so you don't have to worry about looking nice or keeping it formal. The menu featured an insanely long list of special rolls, which made it very hard to choose. As much as it pains me to say, I was pretty disappointed in the food. "Da Bomb" roll was pretty decent- that was my favorite roll I tried. But all the other rolls, they were really average and just not high quality. I've had some pretty great sushi and Ichiban just did not hit that mark in any way. Even my dad, who used to come here all the time, agreed that it was a big let down and the quality of the food has plummeted since we lived in town. It's just really unfortunate. The service was decent, our waitress was an adorably smiley lady and she kept up with us well. And even though I now appreciate sushi for all it is, I still don't wish to come back to Ichiban if I have other options. Sigh. read more

I have tried so many sushi places in Rapid city and this one was by far the best! The fish was fresh and tasted great! If you've ever eaten at a sushi place outside of the state of South Dakota, this restaurant will be nothing but disappointing to you. If you have no idea what sushi is supposed to taste like, this could be an enjoyable experience. But in my opinion you're better off getting your sushi from the local Safeway. The waitress was sweet but the wait times and cooks are horrible and so rude. Took 45 minutes just to get 2 rolls. Only 2 other groups in there. I specified that I'm pregnant so need cooked fish and gluten free soy sauce due to allergy. 45 minutes later I get my food and it's covered in soy sauce. I apologize and ask for it to be remade with no soy sauce because of the gluten. Do not let the bad reviews fool you. I honestly don't understand how there is so many. This place has been my sushi go to for the last 4 years! Not only is the food absolutely mouth wateringly delicious, the service is top notch. I highly recommend the crab poppers and the steamed pot stickers for apps! For sushi I recommend the coconut roll, ichiban roll and the lucky 7! You will never be disappointed ordering from here. This place is the only ramen place in Rapid City. It's not true Japanese food. Allow dine in and take out. Food took a little long to arrive at our table. We ordered the followings: 1 - House Ramen soup with pork. The pork was diced. In the soup was green bean, carrot, and white baggage. Somehow they throw in imitation crab. No green onion or scallion. 2 - Nabeyaki Udon soup. This item should not be called Nebyaki Udon, it was more like another House noodle. It was not served with Udon noodle but some thing else. The chicken was from packaged chicken nuggets with Teriyaki sauce. The sauce made the soup unlike what a Nabeyaki soup should taste like or look like, which is clear. This item doesn't come with corn, mushrooms, green vegetable and a tempura shrimp. 3. Shrimp tempura roll. The shrimp doesn't taste so fresh. Sushi rice taste like regular steamed rice. Wasabi was dried up. 4. Kids teriyaki chicken. Again, they used packaged chicken nuggets covers in lots of sauce. read more

I really don't understand the handful of reviews that say the food here is not good, because my wife and I have been eating here for years, including 4 times in the last few months, and it's always been one of our favorite restaurants in the area. We've had sushi everywhere, from California to Florida, and we'd put the sushi rolls at Ichiban up against any of them. In particular, we love the Fire and Ice Roll and Poppin' Tuna Roll! Their spicy sauce is the best. The miso soup and tempura is really good, too, and the prices and food proportions can't be beat. I did give them a 4, though, because within the last few months, we've had bad customer service there whenever we've dined in. They have one older waitress there who will sit you at your table but forget to come back to take your order or never visit you again to give you refills. I don't know what she's doing half the time, because she's inattentive even when few tables are occupied. Also, the general manager was rather rude with us one time when we brought our parents to try out the place. She seemed to have forgotten that the customer always comes first as she argued over each of us using a coupon, even though we were paying separately. It got really embarrassing as she made quite a scene about it in front of the whole restaurant. Even at that, I would still recommend this place first to anyone wanting sushi in Rapid City! The fried dumplings were some of the best I have ever had and the sushi was amazing. I love sushi and have had it in every major city from here to NYC and I was very pleased with what I was served. I ordered Ichiban today through Food Dudes Delivery. I've been unimpressed with Ichiban's food in the past, but thought I would try one more time. This was the last time; never again. What I ordered, the description on the menu, and what I got: Spicy Crab Egg Roll "crab, cream cheese, bacon & spicy sauce": it was a spring roll, not an egg roll, and the crab was practically non-existent. Pork Gyoza "7 pork steamed fried dumplings & house sauce": this was the best of the order, the house sauce was basic but good, there could have been a better sear on the dumplings but I'll chalk that up to it being delivered and not eaten fresh. TNT "scallops, calamari, shrimp, & mushrooms smothered in Japanese mayo and masago": this was absolutely disgusting! The seafood was all very tough, very overcooked, and tasted fishy - not like fresh seafood at all (to be fair we live in a landlocked state, but we also have an excellent fresh fish monger in the city who supplies the best restaurants). There was no discernible masago on the dish at all, which was one of the reasons I chose it. This was unpalatable, inedible, and went in the trash. Fire Cracker Roll "tempura fried roll with crab and chile vinegar sauce": I was hoping for a roll with the bright flavors of the chile vinegar sauce, but there was too much cream cheese and only a tiny bit of the vinegar sauce; also the "crab" should have been listed as krab, crab stick, kani, surimi, etc, not crab. Not terrible, but not what was described on the menu. I understand that this was a delivery order and not eaten fresh in the restaurant; I give passes to the dumplings and the fried portion of the roll for that. Good place and very friendly staff. I stopped in after a really long day and had a pleasant and relatively quick meal - very much appreciated the speedy service. I sat at the sushi bar so I could chat with the chef a little. The nigiri was the usual stuff and very middle of the road. I noticed a wide variety of rolls on their menu and asked what they offered which was uniquely theirs. I received a recommendation to try the 'over the top' roll. I'm glad I accepted the recommendation! I would have a hard time describing this as a sushi roll based on the construction and presentation. First of all, it involves no nori. Secondly, it is served fresh from the oven. Third, good luck eating it with chopsticks (the fork was recommended and used). The best way to describe this roll is literally - it involves rice, either shrimp or calamari (your choice), cream cheese, and avocado. All of that is wrapped in a thin piece of salmon, topped with some spicy mayo, and baked until warm and the fish is mostly cooked. Sprinkle some scallions on top and serve. Again, not sure it really constitutes sushi but it certainly made for a good entree. It is incredibly rich and filling so don't get ambitious about what else to order if you have one of these in mind. As an added bonus, they even offer a military discount! read more

While living in Rapid we ate at Ichiban at least once a week. The atmosphere is comfortable and cozy. There is limited seating, but magically there always seem to be enough tables. The sushi chefs are knowledgeable and fun to talk to if you decide to sit at the bar. All-in-all I miss Ichiban it's a greatest little sushi house in South Dakota. read more

This place is pretty small but clean. We were seated right away but our waitress was really busy and we didnt really get good service. It's kind of uncomfortable/dive-y, definetly not romantic or a intimate dinner spot. It would be good for lunch or if you have a lot of kids with you. The sushi itself was priced great, the rolls were loose though and very cheesy/bready. Very large portions for your money. If you like your sushi more Americanized (think cream cheese and deep fried tastiness) then this might be a good spot for you. read more

This is the Worst Japanese restaurant I ever had! Its ramen was mushy! the fish was over cooked (and I suspect it was not fresh - that's why they over cook it to cover up) I had diarrhea right after came back in hotel. Not only that, the charge is very unreasonable!!! We asked for a cup of ginger water which was 4 slices of ginger in boiled water... They charge for $3.50! Even we live in San Francisco, the expensive town in the USA could not accept this kind of rip offs. DON'T! I say DON'T be a fool to walk in this restaurant for Japanese food, you'd be better off buy a hamburger in this town instead of having seafood here. read more

Meh. It's what you'd expect for sushi in South Dakota. Don't get me wrong - when they opened in 2005, we were THRILLED to finally have a sushi joint in town. And it's not bad, but a lot of their offerings are pretty comparable to what you'd get in a grocery store in a bigger town. Anything with "krab" is actually chopped up krab "salad" of some kind, and a lot of the fancier rolled are drowned in mayonnaise based sauce (you might consider these rolls with the sauce on the side). The rice is hit-and-miss - sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's obviously less-than-fresh. Prices seem a little higher than they ought to be, but not sky-high. On the positive, the restaurant is big - it's a great place for a large gathering, and there are plenty of offerings for non-sushi eaters. The kids menu is great - very inexpensive and good options for children (I especially like how the chefs take the time to make the children's plates visually appealing - this goes a long way with the younger crowd). The restaurant is spotless, and the staff is friendly. It's not far off I-90, so it's not a bad option for travellers. Not mind-blowing, but not bad, either. read more

So pains me to do this, but went there today after not going out to eat for 2 months, this was my first time eating out since Coronavirus began. It was also my Birthday and was dying for some rolls. So I use to come here about 6 years ago and it wasn't my favorite but it wasn't bad. What happened. Only place we could sit down so we went. First off before we sat I said i would like to use your bathroom. Lady tonks me, ok but the womans room has a burned out light bulb, so you have to use the men's. Ok so I do , and then there is no soap in the dispenser. In these times that seems insane they are not making sure that's available for customers. So we order got pot stickers and egg rolls to start. Potstickers were ok but on the slimy side and the eggroll had ground beef and onion that was it, it was like a taquito not an eggroll. Our server is very young and didnt seem to speak much English perhaps, or was so shy, wasn't sure. Then we get our meal , i ordered 2 rolls a spicy tuna roll and a smoked salmon roll with pinapple. The salmon one was dry and avocado was mushy, but wasn't the worst one. The tuna roll my first bite i almost chocked tears ran out of my eyes , I thought I had gotten a huge glob of wasabi, but the flavor was a chemical flavor and burned. It tasted like cilantro bathed in bleach with super fishy after taste. I tried one more without wasabi to make sure and it was unbelievable bad. My boyfriend got Pork Katsu , it was dry , hardly any sauce, the rice on his plate and my rolls I could tell was old...like day old. The waitress saw that we didnt eat any more of my bleach roll, didnt ask if I wanted a box or if there was a reason I left it. There were cracked out people wandering all over the front of the building, drinking beer in the bushes and trying to bum money,and at this point I was so deflated on my birthday lunch I didn't have the energy to tell this girl how bad it was, and i doubted anyone there was going to care. It cost me 50 bucks and i still tipped percent....as I am a waitress myself. I just could not just do nothing though so I am warning you.......every sushi place in Rapid is leaps and bounds above this place and I am praying I didnt get food poisoning! We went to Ichiban hoping it was the same chain we found in WY, but knew it wasn't the minute we got there. The menu has varied items and lots of rolls, but only a couple bento boxes and couple main dishes. We ordered the beef tips with veggies and rice. Tried the beef egg roll, which was way overpriced for what you receive and was super small. It also reminded me of a taquito...wasn't Asian tasting at all. The main dish was good...nothing to write home about, but not bad. If you mix it all together with the white rice, the sweet sauce they used to cook the meat and veggies in makes it tasty. We ordered their combo fried rice to take home...and was surprised when tasting it, and not in a good way. I've never in my life had fried rice that was spicy or that had bell peppers in it. There was also a huge amount of what appeared to be super mini scallops (way too much and way too fishy). Not sure what they were, but it was not good. Would not recommend this dish at all. Have to say it was the worse fried rice ever experienced. The one server working to support the entire place along with checkout did a good job, but she's overworked for sure. They need help. We will continue to search for new places to try here in SD! read more

I'm from out of town and here in RC for a job (and No, not to wack someone for the Mob). Instead of the normal "whack-a-mole" theme restaurant selection, our group of three went here, and each one of us was happy and satisfied when we left. I ordered the noodles with tempura chicken and egg & brown broth.....OMFG it was GOOD !! My co-workers had sushi and REALLY raved about the quality and flavor of their selections. And....AND.....they gave us hot towels to wipe our hands & faces with....sadly, we couldn't keep the towels (so I just stole one from my hotel room). They serve alcohol and the wait staff is friendly and helpful! Inside is clean, and minimal - not a lot of clutter. The focus is on the food !!! Go & eat - it's worth it ! read more

As a vegan family visiting Rapid City we were SO excited to find this restau. We had a delicious dinner of edamame, tofu and amazing grilled veggies (seriously -- the green onion was exceptional), veggie tempura and veggie sushi. We all really enjoyed our meal. We went in for sushi at 2:30, and we were basically the only people in the restaurant. However, that did not stop it from being the worst service we've received in a long time. We weren't given refills until we were done eating, the food took forever, and when it did arrive it was average at best, and our sushi didn't come as it was described on the menu, missing different sauces and vegetables. Finally when we had to find our server for our ticket, she asked us how our meal was- after we were already about to walk out of the door.
