This is really authentic Korean Food. I can't speak to the Japanese food, but if you want a taste for what Korean food is like on the Korean Penninsula, this rivals any place I've been to. It doesn't have Korean barbecue but the soups are killer and the pa-jang (the little dishes you get at the start of your meal) are awesome. The Chef/owner is a former RISD grad who did design but found that he loved to cook as well, makes all his own Kimchi and studied his technique for 10 years in Korea. Go check it out! read more

Ichiban currently has the best sashimi and sushi in the greater providence area. I have tried them all. Wasabi is fresh and soft. If your wasabi comes in a ball and is firm it comes from a tube. You won't get this at ichiban. Chef takes great care and everything is cut perfectly. read more

second time I've been here and I have to say, I'm totally satisfied. first off we ordered sashimi, fish was pretty fresh and delicious. decent price , we alsp ordered the galbi tang ( beef rib soup) which I did not see in the menu and had to ask for it. It turned out excellent. the meat was exceptionally tender and there was a good amount of it. The soup itself was not overly salty which leads me to believe that they did not put too much Msg in it. It had a great meaty flavor. The thing that sealed the deal for me was the service, it was attentive, friendly, and cheerful and made me really enjoy my experience there. Can't miss sushi!! You have to go just to look at the canopy over the sushi bar. Hand carved by the owner and its spectacular!! Now for the food. Kimchi is homemade and the best I've eaten. We are more sushi and today I ordered the Boston maki and Unagi rolls for lunch. Fresh and delectable. Have tried bento box in the past and that was filling and delicious. Give it a try. I discovered this place after my other favorite sushi place got temporarily shut down for health reasons and I haven't been back to them, but they had the fantastic roll which filled me up. It consisted of spicy tuna, white tuna, shrimp tempura, unagi, and drizzled with spicy mayo. Wanted to avoid death from the other place, I asked the owner if they could make my "special" roll and they did - perfectly! I go there almost every week, or at least once a month for my roll which they've named the "Sally roll" it's not on the menu so I feel extra special, and they know me by name. read more

Ichiban is a family restaurant that offers Korean and Japanese favorites. I practically lived here every weekend. The food is very good. I start with the dumpling soup. If you like sushi rolls the must have is the Ichiban Special roll. It looks great and taste even better. It's a great bargain and a must visit and I definitely recommend. read more

The best Asian in Cranston. They start you out with 4 little appetizers. Some beans, some sort of shredded cabbage, little bean paste pillows (?) and the best kimchi ever. That's before you order. The lunch specials are great. The sushi is great. The noodle dishes (I think here are 12 or so to choose from) are great. They also feature bibimbap in the clay pots. Great stuff. Servers are super nice. I think they are mostly family, but all are super nice. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's very clean and nice. read more

What's the worst kind of poisoning? Food poisoning, of course! I recently visited Ichiban on a quiet Saturday afternoon with my girlfriend. She picked Ichiban because of the great reviews the restaurant has somehow received here on Yelp. I'm here to set the record straight. The restaurant was very quiet when we arrived -- there were only 2 other guests when we were seated. We were given some free appetizers, a nice touch to an otherwise putrid experience. Nothing on the sushi menu really stood out to me, so I ordered a shrimp tempura roll and a side of shrimp fried rice. My girlfriend requested the Kami Kazi roll, and a shrimp tempura with California roll-like crabmeat. The rolls tasted alright -- nothing exceptional but also nothing indicative of how we would feel after. The shrimp fried rice was massive -- a generous portion. The shrimp were not de-veined, however. Service was somewhat spotty -- the restaurant was dead and our waitress had no other responsibilities besides our table, but she was slow with the check and equally slow with taking my payment. The manager eventually came over to take my card because our waitress was so inattentive. I immediately experienced the most crippling sort of diarrhea upon returning home, attributing it to the tuna atop the Kami Kazi roll. My girlfriend and I have raw tuna in our sushi quite often, so I know that my stomach can tolerate it. I had only 1 piece of the Kami Kazi roll, so my bout of diarrhea lasted only a sort while, foreshadowed of course by intense stomach pain. My girlfriend, on the other hand, awoke during the middle of the night to violently vomit up her food. She had eaten the remainder of the roll, ~9 pieces. She was stricken with protracted diarrhea, also. We are sure these conditions came as a result of the food we were served at Ichiban. This is simply unacceptable. My girlfriend and I would never pay for diarrhea and vomiting. This isn't, of course, to deter future patrons or returning guests from visiting Ichiban, but simply a warning. Good day sir. read more

One of the best sushi spots in RI. I always get the grace roll, kamikazi with scallop, and I highly recommend the coca tuna. The marinated tuna makes it way better than your typical crispy tuna roll. Service is decent, nothing special. read more

I've been here many times before, and have usually enjoyed it. I agree with reviewers who say the menu isn't "authentic," but who doesn't love a fusion sushi roll?? Last night, though, I had my first really bad experience here. Of the three special rolls we ordered, two were sweet. So sweet. Dessert level sweet. And for no explicable reason! Sure, the green dragon roll features a tiny slice of asian pear along with eel and avocado--but it should still be a savory, umami experience, with the fresh fruit there mostly for crunch. I have no idea where this sweetness came from, but it was gross. And the tuna. On the red dragon roll, it was a lurid color -- a magenta, really. I know that dying other fish to look like tuna is a common practice, and I can't help but think that this color was not found in nature. And if it is--well, certainly not on tuna. I had a good run of trips to this place, but after an experience like this, I don't go back. read more

Ichiban hands down my favorite korean restaurant. Very close to a legit korean food such as jjambbong and tang su yuk. Jjambbong which is a spicy broth noodle soup with huge amount of seafood is very nice. I go here once a week. They also have very nice sushi and rolls. Great atmosphere and good service. read more

I always have really good, friendly service when I come and the food is excellent. You do pay a bit more, but it is fresh, good quality food. The sushi rolls are very flavorful, try the kami kazi roll, dragon or volcano, I've tried a lot of them and have not been disappointed. The bibimbap does not disappoint either. read more

We visited Ichiban for lunch on a weekday. We ordered appetizers and (I quote the menu) "C6. Bulgogi, Traditional thin sliced Korean style BBQ beef on a sizzling platter and C7. Kopdol Bibimbab, on display in a spectacular sizzling stone bowl." Although we were not hungry, we could not stop until the dishes were empty, although the portions were sizable. No doggy bag was needed. The food was good. Don't miss the wonderful rice crust at the very bottom of Bibimbab, it can be easily scratched out. There was also a fiery red hot sauce to it which is still glimmering in my memory after a few days. It will revitalize and make you forget all your misfortunes. I love Korean food and I was excited when I found out there is a Korean restaurant near my office. I previously ordered lunch combos and the food was delicious and full of flavor! However, the other day ordered the bibimbap & I regretted ordering food from there. They basically gave me a lot of rice with little vegetables or meat. I had to add soy sauce (which I rarely do) to make it more edible! It was still bland after the soy sauce. It lacked flavor overall. I can get better food for $15 bucks. read more

For picky folks and foodies this place is a 3 star. For normal pallets easily 4-5 star. I was on work travel and wanted some fresh fish that was NOT fried, so i followed my fellow Yelp reviewers and tried Ichiban. Went on a Friday evening and sat at the sushi bar. I attempted to coax, cajol, and otherwise get the sushi chef to offer up a specialty fish dish or something he was proud of but had no luck whatsoever. Had some Octopus to start. OK, but rubbery. Really good Octopus will have a bite to it but not be rubbery. This was OK octopus. Next came a 20pc. sushi platter. Presentation was average, fish was fresh, not too thick and not too thin. Plate was unimpressive for $24, I have had same for less money. They make Korean noodles in house. I figured I would try those. Good choice. Ordered Udon with beef medium heat level, stir fry. Noodles were very good. Spice level was on the money. The stir fry aspect could have been much better done. Beef was ok. There was a bit of onion, zucchini and carrot throw in and not overcooked. Overall a good pleasant surprise. I wish I could have gone into the kitchen and shown the chef the proper cooking technique for that dish, it would have been exceptional and netted them a 5star rating from me. Something I do not give easily. Overall impresion: Average decor. attentive service in a family run environment (owners children doing HW, at the bar, personal conversations going on between waitstaff in F.O.H. etc). Sushi chef was competant but uniterested in showing personal attention to the only customer sitting in front of him... Food was fresh, $$$, completely edible, presented in an average manner. If the prices were a dollar or 2 less I would have expected less and been able to present another star for value to fresheness ratio. The Korean dishes seem to be the hits at this place. I plan on going back and sampling more during my stay in RI. If I were a local I would visit this place regularly if my finances allowed. read more
