The best family dentist in Burbank. I have been going here for years because I love the staff Roccio, Marta, Nancy. My husband just started going and we just took our three year old for his first check up. My toddler had a blast playing around the office. Dr. Hamel counted his first 20 baby teeth and our baby smiled the whole time. We appreciate the family vibes and good intentions at this office. I just had my first appointment with Dr. Hamel and WOW! What a great doctor. He took X-rays of my entire mouth, and then explained all that needs to be done. He is kind, patient ( I'm not a good patient), listens, I could go on and on. By far the best dentist I've ever been to. So happy my friend recommended him to me. Today was the first time I went to Dr. Hamel. My dental insurance changed and I was given a list of Dentists in Burbank. I called Dr. Hamel's office, and explained my situation about my insurance. The assistant x-ray technician Rocio, answered the phone. She told me that the insurance office manager Nancy was busy and she would give her the message and check if I was covered. Rocio was so nice and made me feel so good right away. A few days later I spoke to Nancy, she told me that they cover my insurance and was able to give me an appointment for a few days later. I went for my appointment today and I filled out the paperwork and was called into the office right on time. X-rays were taken by Rocio and Dr. Hamel came in and did the exam. Dr. Hamel is very friendly, and professional. I felt very comfortable with him. Then, Martha the hygienist came in and cleaned my teeth. She is also very nice. I recommend Dr. Hamel and his whole staff. That are all so friendly, and knowledgeable. I plan on being with all of them for years to come. Thank you so much to all of you! read more

I've been a patient of Dr Hamel for at least 4 years. I trust dr's work and the hygienist, Martha is very gentle and takes her time when cleaning teeth. Dr Hamel is a premium dentist which means I have to pay a little more than my copay because my insurance doesn't cover everything. I was okay with the additional charges because I really like the hygienist and doctor. My negative review is in regards to Candy the receptionist. She always seems to have attitude when I speak to her. I'm going to look for another dentist for this reason alone. I don't believe in spending my money where the staff is rude and unprofessional. read more

Having found Dr. Hamel on Yelp. I figured it was time I wrote him a review. I have been a patient of Dr. Hamel for a little over a year and half now. He is an excellent dentist. He's professional, polite, and understanding of your needs and concerns when you see him. He's also easy to talk to, both as a dentist and as a person. On one of my last visits with him the two of us were talking about our current economy as he did my gold crown. I have never felt any pain while I was in the chair at Dr. Hamel's and in today world of dentistry that is how it should be. Dr. Hamel makes sure you are completely numb before he begins working on you and takes his time with your mouth. The quality of work I have had on my mouth from Dr. Hamel is excellent. I don't know anyone who likes the dentist, most people say it is ok or are completely terrified. Unlike getting a haircut, which I love and some people are terrified of a communal fear of the dentist seems to be natural to the human race. With that said, Dr Hamel is pretty great, tall guy, deep voice, friendly, firm hand shake. He is very thorough, quick and professional. He will tell you what is wrong, if anything, what you need, if anything and how to fix it, if it needs fixin'. I have been to other dentists who want to do everything under the sun to make some money, Dr. Hamel does what is necessary and let's you know why as well. My mom worked as Dr. Hamel's assistant nearly my entire life, so this is where I've had my teeth cleaned forever. Lucky me I have good teeth and insurance, so I've never had to deal with the truly awful experience of a root canal (either having it or paying for it). Barbara is my favorite hygenist. She is quick and thorough. I'm usually in and out of her chair within 20 minutes. And she'll regale you with her stories about exotic travels. The last time I was there, she had just returned from the Amazon. That was a great story! And for the scaredy cat, it's a good way to distract from the dental work! I know most people are afraid of the dentist, but you shouldn't be of this guy. Dr. Hamel is an imposing figure (way over 6 feet), but not intimidating. Also, since my mom worked there, I know first hand how fastidiously clean and sterile the place is. My entire family are still his patients. I hate dentists! Or should I say, I hate going to the dentist's. When my blinding toothache hit a couple weeks ago, I knocked it back with pain pills and let it subside. I crossed my fingers and hoped it wasn't a sign of something else... but mental note: when you have a toothache, it means you need to go to the dentist. The pain came back so I decided to bite the bullet (no pun intended... okay, pun intended) and steel myself for the bad news. Turned out it was only as serious as a broken filling. He did say I might need a root canal, but when he started digging around he said that cleaning it out and replacing the filling might work, at least enough to delay a root canal for a year or two. I was surprised because in every other visit to a dentist, it was always a checkup, then come back next week, get part of the work done, come back next week again, and on and on. But Dr. Hamel took care of everything in that one visit -- and it turned out he's a HUGE fan of KFI too. Maybe that's why he numbed me up but good. Highly recommended. read more

Switched to Dr. Hamel a few years ago and am really glad I did. He is incredibly knowledgeable, professional, thorough, gentle and HONEST. I also like that the hygienists really get in there and scrape/clean your teeth by hand. I have nothing but praise for him and his staff, including the front office. Dr. Ian Hamel was my dentist from November 2018 through November 2019. As my dentist had moved out of the area, I was searching for a new dentist, and Dr. Hamel advised he was accepting new patients. He took X-Rays, and cleaned my teeth on November 18, 2018. He then recommended that I have deep cleaning. Two deep cleaning sessions were booked, one for each side of my mouth. My insurance only covered a small portion, so I was responsible for paying a large part of it. I also had regular preventative cleaning at Dr. Hamel's office.​ ​ In November 2019, Dr. Hamel brings in the X-Rays that he had taken the previous year, and said, "You'll need a root canal on tooth no. 18." Alarmed, I said, "How do you know?" He said, "See there's a shadow there under the tooth." As I left, his assistant gave me the name of the endodontist with whom I was to follow-up. I got a second opinion, and was told that I did indeed need a root canal. I underwent the root canal in February 2020. Dr. Hamel is under an obligation to inform patients when an important dental procedure like a root canal, needs to be done. He waited an entire year before informing me that the root canal needed to be performed even though he knew about it when he took the X-Rays in 2018. At best, this is abject incompetence because a dentist with his number of years of experience should be able to properly read an X-Ray. At worst, Dr. Hamel let me tooth continue to rot for an entire year before telling me about it for his own financial gain (i.e., to ensure that I would undergo the deep cleaning procedures at his office). Either one is inexcusable. read more

I wish I could rate the dentist himself separately from the rest of the staff. His poor work caused long term physical harm to my jaw and I do not plan to return here. Super friendly reception ladies. They really do anything and everything they can to make your experience pleasant. They were able to give me quick and accurate info about what my insurance would cover, and I even got a grind guard for almost half the price everyone else in town is charging. The hygienist, Martha, is awesome. Her cleaning was probably the most thorough I've had in years, and I feel confident in her recommendations on care products. She also goes the extra mile to make sure you're comfortable. When I came in for a deep cleaning, she took time to warm up the numbing solution so that it wouldn't hurt going in, and was really great about keeping my mind off all the needles and tools (which tend to make me feel woosey). I wish I could come here just to see her! Dr. Hamel seemed ok through my first visit or two, but I noticed pretty quickly that the cosmetic work I've had done here (bonding) has not held up and has had flaws that needed adjustment. Everything I've had done here chips off in under a year, even though the application method is much bulkier (allegedly stronger) than my previous dentist. Sometimes I could feel lumps on the back of my teeth or scratches in the bonding material. When I would come back in and ask for those problems to be addressed, the Dr. would give me a bit of an attitude; implying that it was all in my head or that I was being picky. I would have to be very firm to get him to fix the issues. I have since had work done else where and the difference is like night and day! On one visit I brought my night guard with me to be cleaned. When he brought it back, he had added new lumps of material to the bottom "so it would take longer for me to wear through". This was not something I asked for, but he indicated it was a routine thing to do and it seemed sound in theory. I used the guard for a week and found that when i awoke in the morning my jaw was very uncomfortable and the right side would pop in and out of joint. I went back to the office and told Dr. Hamel what was happening, and that it was never an issue before he added the lumps of material to the night guard. Essentially, he blew me off. It couldn't possibly be the fault of the night guard, I'd get used to it, etc. I slept with this horrible thing in my mouth for another month before going in again. My jaw had gotten so out of whack that it no longer clicked back into place after one or two tries. Now it popped all day long and was causing me pain. Again, the Dr. tried to tell me it couldn't possibly be because of the extra night guard bulk, even though that was the only factor that had changed in my routine prior to the pain. His attitude was very condescending and he treated the matter as though i were making it up. I asked him to buzz the extra material off the night guard to restore it to its original state and he objected, saying what he added made it "better". I had to be very firm to get him to do it, and even then he did a pretty half ass job. I ended up using a dremel tool to take the rest of the lumps off at home myself. In the end, I got a soft night guard at CVS which I actually like much better. The aftermath of Dr. Hamel's negligence and denial was 3 months of intense jaw pain, accompanied by swelling and an associated ear infection. According to my ENT, the misalignment the night guard created caused the ligaments and tendons on my right side to tighten and spasm. I could not open my mouth wide to eat a burger or even yawn comfortably. Some days there was pressure and pain under my teeth when I would chew food, due to inflammation. I have since been treated by the ENT Dr. and have relief for the first time in SO long! Just think, if Dr. Hamel had listened to my concerns the first time i came in and adjusted the night guard appropriately, I wouldn't have had to spend my entire spring eating only soft foods and feeling like Two Face. Summation: If you're looking for a hygienist, Martha is the best! Maybe check with your insurance to see if you can get your serious dental work and cosmetics done elsewhere, because I did not find Dr. Hamel's attitude or quality of work to be professional. read more

I've been Dr. Ian Hamel's patient for more than 25 years. Each and every time I go for cleaning or exams or even repairs, I find him and his entire staff to be professional, caring, efficient and skilled. Dr. Hamel himself is highly trained and a dentist who listens to the patient's symptoms and uses an analytical approach to problem-solving. He spends the time necessary to diagnose and then repair the broken tooth, the cap that needs replacing and will take preventative measures and provide education to the patient when needed. Charlene, his office manager, and assistant office manager, Candi, and hygienist Martha, as well as dental assistant Sylvia, all play roles in the efficient operation of the office, its professionalism and its caring attitudes. Recently, I had a series of headaches that caused a local doctor to send me for a brain CT scan and a brain MRI test. Both tests were very expensive. The doctor did not call me back with the results. In the meantime, my pain seemed to be focused on one of my upper molars. I called Dr. Hamel's office and they immediately suggested I come in to talk with him and allow him to exam the tooth area. He compared several years of x-rays on that particular tooth and noticed a shift/movement in its position. He took a new x-ray to compare the past ones with the current situation. After examining me, removing the previous cap, then testing to see if the tooth's roots were still active, he gave me a mild pain injection and put on a temporary cap, creating a new one to repair the missing space from movement at a later date. He noted that the cause of the movement was my grinding of teeth during the night. He made an impression for a night guard, which I picked up a few days later, and he is replacing the temporary cap with a permanent one. Going to the dentist is not something many people look forward to. Going to Dr. Ian Hamel, even with a painful headache, turned out to be the right decision. His analysis and his skill and scientific approach combined to fix my problem. I did not need a brain surgeon. I needed someone who, like Dr. Hamel, listened to the problem, tested the site of the pain and determined the solution. All this in an office with a friendly and competent staff! After a HORRIBLE experience with a different dental office when I first moved to Burbank, I was desperate to find someone I could trust. I found that person in Dr. Hamel and his wonderful team! I've been seeing them for a few years now and everyone phone call and office visit is a delight. They are so easy to talk to about any issues and all are very knowledgeable in what they do. I have not had dental insurance for years and the rates are reasonable for those uninsured. He doesn't try to upsell me on things and he doesn't rush into "fixing" a potential problem. Instead we wait it out until the next appointment and see if the issue has changed at all. Other dentists would jump right into a filling, but he doesn't waste my time or money. What a fantastic find! Dr. Hamel is terrific! Professional, kind, informative and very easy to like! His staff is truly friendly and upbeat and I am so pleased to be a patient. If you have to go to a dentist, this is really the one to go do. I had porcelain fillings and teeth cleaning and was thoroughly impressed by Dr. Hamel's work. He took time to inform me and discuss treatment with me and I never felt pushed or rushed. I really appreciate his spending time with me. And, he's really well versed on a ton of current topics both political and everyday stuff! This office is great, Dr. Ian Hamel is very friendly and his staff make you feel very comfortable. He's very reasonable (I currently don't have dental insurance) and neither he nor his staff ever once tried to upsell me on additional services. From someone who has been forced to frequent Castle Dental (the Jiffy Lube of dental offices) due to less than stellar insurance options, this office was a welcome change! I waited less than 5 minutes and I was never left in the chair alone for any longer than ten minutes, and only left that long for numbing solutions to kick in. Admittedly, Ian Hamel, DDS is my uncle. He's also a brilliant dentist. Dr. Hamel has been my dentist since birth and has dealt with some my most unfortunate dental accidents - like the time in 2nd grade that a boy on the monkey bars kicked me in the mouth and chipped my newly acquired front tooth. Even though I was sobbing incessantly before getting to Dr. Hamel's office, as soon as I sat in the chair, Uncle Ian and his staff calmed me into sweet submission. The tough procedure of repairing my heavily chipped tooth didn't bother me in the least since Dr. Hamel and the hygenists are so funny and nice:) In the 6th grade, I saw an orthodonist for braces who remarked that the repair of my chipped front tooth was the "most skillful he had ever seen." Since I've moved out of the area for school, I've seen other dentists out of necessity. EVERY ONE of them has complemented the filling on my front tooth and they all were impressed the the sealing procedure that Dr. Hamel had done to my teeth as a little girl (to prevent cavities). To that effect, I've only ever had ONE cavity - and only Dr. Hamel caught it. My other dentist didn't see it show up on an XRay, so I drove 300 miles home to get my uncle to fix it. Thank God.
