Here's a few tips about Mellis's. First, be sure to talk to the staff and tell them what you're looking for. There's a couple of benefits of doing this. First of all, they'll help you find something suited to your taste. Secondly, they'll help you find something that goes with the meal or wine you'll be having. They're very knowledgeable about their cheeses, so trust them. If they suggest something you're not used to, don't say no just because you don't like blue cheese (or whatever). They won't have you try something they don't think you'll like. Which brings me to my second point: If you're going to dinner at a friend's (which I often do); tell them what's for dinner, or if you're not sure, tell them what wine you're bringing as well. Anytime I walk past this shop, I have a sharp intake of breath as I forget that as a Cheese specialist, it has a rather strong smell. Not a bad smell, just... well, cheesy. I finally went in the other day and wow! I was stunned by the wide selection of cheese available - it's incredible! They've got cheese from all over Europe, and accompaniments, like Salami, and antipasto - I tried a fair few samples, to be honest. Totally worth it. Each cheese comes with a back story of how it was made, along with other interesting facts. My favourite of the day, most definately, was the Brie de Meaux - I love Brie, and this was just scrumptous! Perfectly ripe, and not too overpowering, all in all, an amazing cheese! Pricing? I know nothing about cheese beyond the fact that Dairylea is really not actually cheese and that some of the cheeses you can purchase in here, are. So armed with this lack of knowledge I marched into Mellis with shopping list whcih read: Hi Chris, (it's more of a friendly letter with items to be purchased, rather than a plain old shopping list) I do hope you're having a good day so far! Now, before I (me/you) tell you the stuff you need to buy, I just wanted to remind you to remember to put the bins out tonight. Got that? Ok, we shall continue. Cheese. You need to buy cheese. All my best, Chris (me/you). Yeah, you guessed if peeps, he (I/me) totally passed the buck and pretty much just shoved me into the shop with no info at all... whit a baw! Luckily for me these guys are the experts in cheese. Cheesperts if you will. So, with a vague idea of what I required (something to go with wine, something with whisky, something with gin... ooh vague!) I was shown (read given) some samples to try and involved in a bit of back and forth on the merits of each with each of the drinkies. I was torn whether or not to give Mellis 4 or 5 stars. And here's why; The shop itself is fantastic and the service is second to none! When I was in just before Christmas bying some nice cheeses for a wee after Christmas dinner cheese board they gave a one on one service and I got to taste everything I was buying (the Camembert they sell in here is the best I've ever had) and I was really impressed with this. However I only bought maybe 300g of cheese and I only got a few pennies back off of a 20quid note! Not to fear though, this place is perfect for such times as Christmas when you are willing to spend a little more on the things you wouldn't usually otherwise. Their cured meats are also a treat. It's not only the unrivalled selection of cheese which makes this place so loved, but also the extremely friendly staff who are more than happy to help non-connoiseurs compile a well matched cheese board or choose an appropriate gift based on what you can tell them about the recipient's tastes. Stocking plenty of accompaniments as well, it's a one-stop shop for all your cheese requirements. Love this little shop, could spend a long time here! Every cheese I've tried so far have been great, the wide selection and friendly staff always bring me back. This strip of Great Western Road has some great wee food shops. It's quite pricey, but to be honest any good cheese shop is. However you really get what you pay for, a member of staff will lead you through the types of cheese you might like and let you try them before you buy any. And I bet each one you try will be delicious! When my mum and I go, we always want lots of little bits so we can try 3 or 4 types from one visit, and the staff are always happy to show off a wide selection. On the last visit we got a hard goats cheese that was a particular highlight. And a smoked Scottish cheddar that made the perfect veggie carbonara! If you're in the area, make sure to pop in! In March of 2008 I visited a friend living in Glasgow. In 10 days, I went to this fantastic cheese shop 3 times. I introduced my friend to Taleggio and the beauty of stinky cheese. It was a bit of a challenge converting pounds / grams into dollars / pound, but I didn't think the cheese was as expensive as some indicate. Maybe I'm used to paying for top shelf cheese? My favorite of the trip was St. Bridget which we used for grilled cheese sandwiches. Of course I have never seen it stateside, even at the local specialty shop, whose selection is probably 5x greater than Mellis. My friend is now moving to a small town in England, which should I ever get to visit, will hopefully have some new food destinations for me, but I'll definitely miss being able to stop in this cheese shop. No sub zero refrigerated plastic wrapped examples were present, just large wheels sitting on a table at room temperature. Can't get away with that in the States. read more

I adore this little cheesemongers come deli. The staff that I have encountered have all been super friendly and so knowledgable. Most of the time I leave stuffed full of cheese and meat samples, because they are so keen for you to try everything they have on offer. The shop it's self is reasonably big, with plenty of room to show off their gorgeous range of delicious cheese and cured meats. Also on offer they have a nice selection of fresh breads, crackers and chutneys and jams to pair with your cheesey purchases. Jumped on the subway to Kelvinbridge for a wee jaunt down the West end. I had no intention of buying cheese but when one happens to pass a genuine cheesemongers, one does not pass it by. So, following a quick withdrawal at the cash machine I nipped in and enquired about some mild blue cheese to get stuck into. I am definitely a cheddar man but fancied something different. Being from East Kilbride, my only opportunity to try cheese is at Morrisons and the idea of asking them to open up different varieties and let me taste at my own leisure would likely go down like a lead balloon. Therefore, I was very pleased that the assistance in IJ Mellis was more than happy to chat about my impending venture in to the murky world of stinky cheese. I was impressed with her (sorry, names aren't my strong point) suggestions and bought a chunk of Shropshire Blue and the Irish Cashel Blue, after a couple of tasty bites. Strong red and creamy, salty cheeses respectively. A wee box of Arran oaties was also purchased. I LOVE THIS SHOP!!!! the staff are really knowledgeable and friendly and just keep trying to feed you free cheese - what's not to love. It is on the pricey side and I pop in here for a wee treat rather than my weekly cheese shop. I'm not exactly knowledgable when it comes to different types but it's one of the few food types I'm fairly adventurous with and so am delighted when I turn up somewhere and there is a cheese board on offer. Yum! My cousin provided such cheeses on a recent visit and the conversation turned to cheese and I discovered she had purchased it all here. I had previously walked past without really paying much attention but now I was desperate to check it out. It is expensive as you would expect but if you want to impress with a varied cheese board or just want to spoil yourself then this is definitely the place to go. I moved to Glasgow two years ago and this place has definitely helped me feel more settled in the west end. It makes such a difference to moving somewhere new to feel like a 'regular' and get to know the staff in the local shops. Mellis definitely has that, and it makes all the difference. It's one of the best things about buying from independent shops is the staff usually stay there a while and so they get to know you and what you like. Specialist shops can be intimidating, but the staff here are so eager to help and teach that it takes that away completely. They are friendly, knowledgeable and very passionate about their product. They have a fantastic range of products, and if there is something you need for a recipe they don't have, then they will recommend an alternative, which I have always found to work just as well. The guy with the mustache is particularly helpful in this area, and especially friendly. He really knows his cheese and always has recommendations for what to do for dinner if you're a bit stuck on the way back from a long day at work! It makes such a difference when someone who works in a food shop is a foodie and actually WANTS to engage with you and have a chat. He is responsible for getting me addicted to a cheese called talleggio, with bacon and rosemary on a baguette [you can get these warm if you're early enough!]. Amazing. But all the staff here are really great, and very jolly, I've never been disappointed. I always bring family and friends who are over visiting in here and they love it too, it's such a unique place. This is why I would rather spend a wee bit more for such quality service that go down the road to sterile-feeling Waitrose, no chance of having a chat with anyone there, and certainly no recipe tips! Don't be intimidated to pop in, you will soon be put at ease, and will most likely come out with an addiction to cheese, and really good service! read more

Update: I wrote to Mellis owners and received a very sincere apology and a refund for the cheese I bought that day. They responded quickly and have shown they do care about what their customers think. Unfortunately I won't be going in there as long as that guy is serving because I couldn't go through that experience again but I think on the whole Mellis is a great local shop to have in the West End. read more
