I stayed here almost exactly a year ago with my husband for the first two nights of our honeymoon. We thought this place would be fun and quirky and were left feeling "meh"
by the Tahiti Room, which had a bed that was weirdly high and uncomfortable, a not great air conditioning system, and an uninspiring and small shower. All of this would have been fine, however, if the worst thing ever had not happened.
When we arrived, it turned out that, due to their Web 1.0 third party booking site, we had somehow booked two rooms instead of one. There was nothing in my email or confirmation to reflect this, as I showed them -- it was just something the young girl who worked there said when we arrived. I said no, we just wanted one room and she said it was no problem. I thought, Phew, that would have been an epic disaster. Two days later, when we checked out, a different man at the front desk we had never seen before said, "I heard it's your honeymoon -- congratulations! If you stay with us again, you can get a free upgrade." I thought this was sweet and thanked him, and then with the same idiotic smile on his face, he said, "We weren't able to sell the other room you booked, so we've charged you for it, sorry!" He was saying this, by the way, only after our taxi to the train station had arrived, so I had very little time to say that this was absurd. We're talking over 400 dollars completely wasted for no reason. Since the cab was there and I like to think of myself as a nice person, I decided to handle the matter when I got home a week later, which only lead to several bullshit emails saying this was not their fault and that I should take it up with their barely-functional third party site. Nothing worked, and I decided that it was time to move on and push my quiet rage about this aside because it was raising my blood pressure.
Looking back, I wish I had put a fraud alert on my credit card because that's what this was. My husband and I are teachers who are very stressed about money and splurged on what was literally our first real vacation together that did not involve our friends and family in some way, and I can't say that knowing I literally lost a third of our budgeted spending money for no reason didn't cast a pall over the trip. I will definitely be standing up for myself much more the next time someone tries to scam me while congratulating me in the same breath. I understand that what happened with the booking site was not their fault directly, but I just couldn't believe they didn't just remove the charge when we explained what happened. Ridiculous. read more
