It's a simple boutique hotel. Temper your expectations. It's not fancy, but it's clean and decently located with lots of restaurants and a 17 minute walk to Old Town Montreal. There are some right crowds on St. Denis Street at night. We stayed here for 3 nights for our visit in Montreal because the pricing was very reasonable. There's a metro station less than 5 mins walk away which makes it convenient for sightseeing. The hotel is a bit dated and the AC is loud in the room at night when sleeping. It does have a small fridge in the closet but don't bother with the coffee in the room. Our room was not ready because we arrived before check-in time, they had no problem storing our luggage while we went out sightseeing. The shower was strong, however they didn't give that many towels and they were thin. We felt safe staying here. We didn't mind staying here because were were out sightseeing all day anyways. Give this hotel a try if you are okay with the budget motel level. Booking directly with the hotel was the cheapest for us. read more

I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars, but I don't want to mislead anyone. It is a budget 3 star hotel. It is not luxurious in any way and some very minor issues, so I went w/4. I found this hotel online and the reviews/ratings seemed a bit better than the last hotel I stayed in when I went to Montreal and it was a bit better. Pros: Great employees. Everyone was friendly and helpful. I was greeted by everyone. I encountered two housekeeping members and while their English (and my French) was limited, we both spoke Spanish, so that was nice. I have to say the sheets and towels were extremely clean. No mattress protector like I've seen in other hotels (just a mattress pad) but no issues. The mattress was very comfortable. Bathroom had a great blow dryer and sufficient lighting (see below). Mini fridge in closet. Keurig in room. Elevator was quick. 24 hour front desk staff (I think I saw 5 all very nice). Great location, a half block from St. Catherine, just a block from "The Village". Parking was enclosed/secure, heated and just a half a block around the corner. Room was reasonably quiet (double windows) but I could hear people just talking in a room on one side and a couple enjoying themselves in another, but overall, fine. Price was a great value (got a special that included parking). Cons: Furniture is dated. Bathroom had one light that was strobing occasionally (hardwired fixture or I would have just taken out the bulb. One other light in the bathroom was out, but in a corner, so that didn't matter. Small toilet, but if it was bigger/oblong, the door wouldn't have cleared it. Needed a better/thicker toilet seat that soft-closed, but ok. Two switches, but both just turned on both fan and lights (would have been great if separately controlled. Just wired incorrectly). Water temp and pressure were adequate, except for a few mins Monday morning. Barely a trickle (not enough to shower) but it fixed itself in a few minutes. As usual, I did a ton of research before actually booking a hotel for our recent short trip to Montreal. I wanted something in a good neighborhood, with easy access to the Metro, a good walking score, and something fairly cheap. I can be quite precious sometimes, can't I? To be honest, my two biggest concerns were proximity to Parc Jean-Drapeau and cost. We were going for a music festival at the Parc, and I was trying to keep it cheap to further entice my husband into being okay with this crazy scheme of mine. Hotel St-Denis checked all my boxes, and after reading reviews on several different sites, I pulled the trigger. We were not disappointed. Location-wise, this can't be beat. It's on the Rue Saint-Denis, which is chock-full of restaurants, shops, theaters and people. It's an easy walk to Old Montreal, the Metro, Rue Saint-Catherine and plenty of bars, but it's not right in the center of the activity, so you don't have to worry about noise or any shenanigans. I will tell you that I fell in love with the Rue Saint-Denis while we were there. We spent most of our time walking that street for food, drinks, and pictures. It's SO incredibly charming - between the patios the extend into the streets and the architecture - that I couldn't get enough of it. It's also very close to a main Metro hub, which is super convenient, should you need to get somewhere beyond your comfort zone. Granted, I was all set to walk to Parc Jean-Drapeau, but the timing didn't work out. And then, by the time we left the festival, neither of us were in any condition to make the trek, so the proximity to the station was a nice bonus. Price-wise, they couldn't be beat. Most of the other hotels that were coming up in my Travelocity search were anywhere from $40 - $70 more than this hotel, and they were much further out (a metro ride to Parc Jean-Drapeau would have taken over an hour for those). The hotel itself is in a plain building with a tiny lobby. Every person we interacted with during our stay was friendly and helpful. They offered suggestions on things to do and see, as well as places to eat and drink. They greeted us every time we left or returned to the hotel. It was nice. We only took the elevator once - on our way up - and that was only because I didn't realize the staircase was so close. The elevator is tiny. It's like a closet on wheels. I fight claustrophobia on my best days, and that thing made the panic seem real. Good thing we only had to go up to the 3rd floor, but we avoided it afterwards. Our room was at the end of a hall, which meant we only shared one wall. That was a bonus because, though we only shared one wall, we could still hear way more of our neighbors than I wanted to. Especially in the bathroom...so yeah, the walls were thin, but luckily we didn't have rowdy neighbors. The room itself was perfect. It was clean, larger than I had anticipated, and had an A/C unit in the window (which we had to get creative with in order to use the unit while sleeping). The bathroom was small but clean. But the best thing about that room was the bed. I don't often love hotel room beds, mostly because it's like sleeping on a rock, no matter how soft they claim it is, but this bed really was quite comfortable. I could see myself sleeping there for a week without any issues (usually I develop a soreness in my back when sleeping on those hard-as-rocks beds). I would very much recommend staying here, if you find yourself in Montreal. Not only is it a great value, it's easy walking distance to things like Old Montreal, Chinatown, Mont Royal and the metro. It's clean, the staff is friendly, and the bed is wonderful. Plus, the WiFi was fast and free. I really can't ask for much more than that. read more

Hotel St - Denis is primo when it comes to location (a hop, skip, and two jumps away from the subway station,) friendly front desk staff, and the unsung heroes of hotels: the cleaning staff. C and I traveled to Montreal for the first time mainly to go to the annual music festival, Osheaga. After extensive research on where would be the best place to stay (air bnb and hotels alike) we decided location was most important. As mentioned we were about a minute away from a subway station that was one stop away from the festival! SO EASY. Other areas like Old Town were also a quick 10 minute walk away. Since we were festival people that week, we were stinky and drenched from rain that poured on us a couple days. The cleaning staff went above and beyond always restocking our towels, hanging wet clothes in the best spot, etc. Is this hotel fancy? Nope. But if you've got the itch to explore the city as much as possible this is the one of the cheapest options to stay in the heart of the city! read more

I had an absolutely amazing stay. There are no cons I can think of. I only speak English and was able to converse with the staff easily. There are many good restaurants a few feet from the hotel. There Berri UQAM station which will take you all over the city is a 3 minute walk. There's an IGA grocery store about 5 minutes away. The street is quiet without street noise but in the middle of everything. Easy subway ride to Le Plateau, Mont Royal, and many other places. The staff was very friendly. Onto the accomodations: room was spotless. There was a safe and a fridge. The room was above average size for a hotel and had a nice large bathroom. It was very homey and well decorated. It didn't feel like a cheap motel. I seriously can't believe how much of a steal this place was. I'm so grateful for this hotel for making my visit to Montreal so pleasant. I'll absolutely stay here upon return to Quebec! read more

Very nice European style hotel located on St-Denis the Champs-Élysées of Montreal. The location is perfect for viewing all that the Plateau has to offer as you are conveniently located within one block of the Berri UQUAM Metro station where all lines converge. This is an older hotel with only four floors; the rooms are good size as are the bathrooms and all rooms are very clean and quite comfortable. I would not recommend the hotel in the warmer months as there is no air-conditioning, otherwise it is perfect in all regards and very affordable at $64/night incl. taxes and in door parking $14/24hr. read more

For a 3 star place, you couldn't possibly ask for anything more. While I definitely wasn't looking to stay at the Ritz Carlton I did need to a hotel that was clean, comfortable, and offered a great location at a reasonable price. We stayed during the week before labor day and paid less than $100 a night. I can't stress how great of a location this is. It's right by UQAM (what seems like a fairly large university) in the Latin Quarter so there are a lot of young people in the area - which also means a lot of fun bars and restaurants. It was really convenient both in the morning (when you're starved and need to get something before you make the trek to wherever you're sightseeing) and at night (when you really don't want to walk too far just to grab a cold one). It is also located about a block from one of the metro hubs where you can pretty much jump on any of the different lines. The room we stayed in had one queen. It was a pretty comfortable size for two people. It was also very well kept - a little outdated, but spotless with a very comfy bed. While we didn't interact too much with the employees, they always greeted us in a friendly manner and helped out with whatever few questions we had. Note: It seems the most "tourist-y" part of Montreal is the Old Montreal area. That may be better for families, but I think this area is much more convenient and interesting to couples/friends traveling together. If you do stay in the Latin Quarter, definitely choose the Hotel St. Denis. read more

Major 1 star deduction was for the shower head, because our bathroom had a broken shower head. It caused us having a hard time taking a shower without one hand holding it, but everything else about the hotel was pretty nice. The location was spot-on, it's near the subway Berri-UQAM, it's closed by to many restaurants, front desk were great, and the room was pretty spacious. The hardwood floor, king size bed, FREE water bottle, and the medallion on the ceiling, just made my stay there so awesome. Elevator was tiny but hey, I'm tiny size, so it's all good. You should visit the game room, it's like underground with all the rocks and bricks, super cool. I'm not sure if this hotel used to be a hostel or something, but other than the shower head issues, I love staying here, would totally recommend it over Lord Berri, which is another block away. read more

Incredible value for your money. My room was spacious, clean and attractive, with a clean and modern bathroom. The room even had a large closet (bigger than my own at home!) that would hold your oversized luggage. There is also a mini-fridge in there. Staff were friendly and helpful, and my room was ready well before check-in time. You can't beat the location-- just steps away from the 747 airport bus stop and Berri-UQAM metro station. The hotel is an easy 10-12 minute walk from the entertainment district, shopping and many attractions. There are plenty of food options in the neighborhood and in summer, the nearby Place Émilie-Gamelin hosts many cultural activities. Overall, a great choice for budget accommodations in Montreal. read more

yeah, an average place. they give you the basics (the real most basics), like coffee maker w/one mug and some plastic cups, couple of towels, shampoo and soap, etc. the room has hardwood floor, which i found ok but some might prefer carpet. there is a work desk and a tv that "didn't have great channels" (my bf's words). ac was working but it kept making these chugging noise every now and then. there was a huge built-in radiator by the wall, but we also found an individual, portable radiator in the closet--don't know what is the implication of that comes winter time. curtains, when closed, would cover the AC completely (no vents), so we had to pull them half way up and tie a knot. and then they were leaking lights in. and people could probably see us from the university buildings around us. other than that, the room was clean (if small) and quiet, and the neighborhood doesn't seem too sketchy being right by UQAM, although we came across at least 1 bum or drunk everyday, who may or may not panhandle as you walk by. now, when we were reading the specs and reviews of the hotel, we were under the impression that each room is equipped with a mini fridge. so we were surprised to find no fridge in our room. went to front desk to inquire, and were told that we had to make advanced arrangement for it since there are only 4 floating around, mostly stationed in the "suites". but we could request for one in the next morning, which we did, and we got one rolled into our room shortly. yes now we can keep our drinks cold and all, but this little monster rattles when you don't set it in the right place. whether it just vibrated against the floor or the door was loose, it just kept buzzing unless you rolled it around a bit or put some heavy thing on top. minor issues. plus side, they do provide free wi-fi internet. but instead of being automatically detected, you'll have to sign in on their webpage using their given IDs and passwords, which makes intermittent connection cumbersome coz you have to start that page and re-connect every time. but, again, minor issues. at least while i was connected i hardly ever got dropped, which is much more important. upon check-out, i realized i have only made reservations through expedia.com, not having paid for it in full. that's fine; i generally don't care who i make the payments to as long as the rate is honored. and i understand there MAY be taxes added on top of the advertised rate, i did not get that when i booked the hotel in toronto and had it prepaid via hotels.com. now i'm "stuck" w/the 13% sales tax and some lodging fees??? that's like extra $65 for 4 nights of stay. and i already paid MORE than what i got in toronto, where the hotel was nicer and cheaper and also came w/free parking. this place, extra $15+tx a day for a separate garage parking! fine, considering how precious parking spaces are in here. the garage is just around the corner (the hotel has 1-2 15-min parking spots blocked off right outside its door for check-in/out). the side street leading to/from it can be deemed a little sketchy at night w/its dim lighting and having an alley filled w/toss-aways right next to it. the parking lot inside was well-lit, clean, and without wanderers. they seem to have a gate that can completely close and shut off the garage from the outside, but i had not seen it down once, not even at 1am on a saturday night. however, they have a couple surveillance cameras there. overall, it does seem safe (personal and property-wise) while inside. parking spots are spacious too, unlike many reviews i've read about other hotels. i know i can't compare apples and oranges. but just by the hotel itself, it's an "ok". not too hot if i'm getting charged some CAD$100+tx a day AND another CAD$15+tx a day for parking, and stayed in a 2.5-star establishment w/minimum amenities. staff was friendly and patient, though; very laid-back if you asked me. entrance and elevators are small, but at least they are there. plus side, the cafe downstairs (kilo) is RIGHT THERE and you can get food till late w/o even having to walk out of the street. there are also a few other pubs, restaurants, and sandwich/sushi take-out places right at the corner of ste-catherine w/in a couple blocks by the turn. and the berri-UQAM train station is only a block away. great for single travelers who are working/visiting in the area; not for those looking for actions at night as the bars and clubs all gather on ste-catherine O past rue peel and on maisonneuve (unless you care to pay extra for cabs). however, my bf went out w/his friends in the aforementioned happening area, and didn't have anything happen to him walking 20 blocks back to the hotel at 3am. so while there may be homeless people roaming around, the streets didn't seem so bad at night. that or maybe he was just lucky....? lol. read more

Perfect hotel for what we needed. We're a young couple visiting Montreal for the first time. We needed easy access to the metro, some fun spots we could walk to, and a simple but non-grimy room. Hotel St-Denis fulfilled all of these requirements. The room was super basic, yet clean and everything was in working order. Totally no frills, but we just wanted a place to lay our head, so it was fine. The concierge was pleasant to deal with and gave us good advice on where to go for nightlife. I felt safe in the surrounding area. The Latin Quarter is a short 5 minute walk which was awesome. Note that there is a park nearby that seemed to be full of some interesting characters. It seemed like everyone there was on some type of drug. You can easily avoid the park if that bothers you, but there are so many people in that area that I deem it safe. Great for people-watching ;-) Overall, it wasn't a bad location by any means. Transportation to spots where you're too tired to walk to is plentiful. There's a rent-a-bike station close by as well which is my #1 favorite thing about Montreal. :) read more

We had a great stay here for two nights in October 2014. The bilingual staff were very friendly. We didn't need a fancy place to stay, so our plainly furnished room with king-size bed, small fridge, free Wi-Fi, and big TV was a great surprise for the low price we paid (I booked through Hotels.com). The location is really perfect. It's right in the middle of the University of Quebec (UQAM) area, so there are lots of cute coffeeshops and cheap places to eat. It's only a few blocks to walk to great restaurants, grocery stores, and sightseeing areas, and the metro stop is two blocks away. The Greyhound station (Gare d'Autocars) is only a few minutes' walk as well. The walls are thin - we could hear the family either down the hall or next door to us have muffled conversations among themselves. We will definitely stay here again if we return to Montreal! read more

The staff were fantastic and bilingual and friendly. The hotel is clean, warm and inviting for a great price. They also have a huge basement common room with TV, fire, lounges and s billiard table. Really cool place to hang if you want some space from the room. Saying that, the rooms are very large and come complete with fridge, pod machine for coffee and tea, TV, desk and large clothes cupboard and Free WiFi. I was searching for a nice, cheap hotel for my stay in Montreal. At first I used Hotels.com...what a scam. Booking.com provided much better deals and I was able to book a room at Hotel St-Denis for a very reasonable price. Aside from lacking a fridge, this hotel is fucking AWESOME for the price. It was clean when I arrived and very spacious and well furnished. I really enjoyed the hardwood floors. Carpets in hotels probably collect decades of feet crust before they replace them. The location was also wonderful just a 15-20 minute walk to Chinatown or Old Port. They also don't provide continental breakfast but I hate those anyway. TL;DR: Will live here again without hesitation. read more

We stayed three nights at Hotel St-Denis. We were in Montreal for a visit and wanted 1) an affordable ($100CA or less/night) place to hang our hats, 2) a hotel close to the Metro system, 3) somewhere with an option to store the rental car for the time we were in town, and 4) somewhere clean but not requiring any frills. Hotel St-Denis fulfilled all these requirements admirably. The rooms were simple and very nicely kept up, beds were comfortable, plumbing worked, and the price was right. The room was quiet, with no discernable noise through the walls. As far as convenience, this place is a block from the Metro hub (Berri-UQAM), giving us easy access to any neighborhoods we chose. This was by far the most beneficial aspect of the hotel. Anyone wanting to use the public transit system in Montreal is advised to be near here. Car parking was half a block away for $16/night. I have paid or seen substantially higher prices in other major cities. My overall impression is that this hotel is fairly priced for what we got, and I would certainly consider staying here again. The proximity to transit is certainly the best aspect of the place. read more

This room was perfect for what I needed. I stayed here for four nights with my sister on our first ever visit to Montreal. The room is super basic. If you are looking to spend time in your room go somewhere else. This is a place to sleep at night and check your e-mail, that is about it. That being said the room is clean and it was quiet at night despite the latin quarter foot traffic on Saturday night. The staff is pleasant and happy to help you find whatever you need. We got in early and they did not charge us an early check-in fee. The Metro was a block and a half away and it was a hub station so i was able to get pretty much anywhere I needed to go. There are bixi stations, rent a bike, nearby too for those who love the concept of a rented bike at your disposal as much as I do. For less than $100 Canadian I don't think I could have asked for much more. I will be back. read more

So much of the great time I had in Montreal can be attributed to the Hotel St-Denis. Honestly, though, it's not that the place is palatial or awe-inspiring or in any real way a good time in and of itself. Now, don't get me wrong: the hotel is great. It's clean, accommodating, wonderfully understated, and serviced by a friendly staff. The thing about the Hotel St-Denis, though, (and this is particularly important for international travelers) is its location. The location is tops. The Hotel St-Denis is surrounded by bars, restaurants, and enough bus/metro stops to make vacationing easy for even the densest of people (i.e. me: The Meandering Traveler). Staying here makes visiting Montreal as easy as walking in any given direction for a few minutes. Further, other curiosities (like Montreal's many cathedrals, its museum, and Old Montreal) are close enough that you don't really need a cab (bear in mind that "close enough" just means that travel by car isn't REALLY necessary, but if you're not ready to walk upwards of five-to-ten miles round-trip, ignore my last observation). Lastly (and of greatest delight to me), the neighborhood is NOT family-friendly, so if you're traveling with a gaggle of children and a nagging spouse, your best bet is Old Montreal. If, however, you're a bit younger (in body and/or mind) and fancy yourself a bit more progressive in ideals, don't even consider staying elsewhere. Drop the Hotel St-Denis a line and inquire as to how soon they'd be willing to accept your money. read more

The staff at check in were very polite, we arrived around 2am so they're there 24/7. All of our questions were answered promptly in person and through the hotel phone. Great location, right by the Berri-UQAM metro and in the Latin quarter. Short walk also to old town. Hardwood floors, great bed and glorious double double glazing with an old fashioned radiator. No waking in the middle of the night cold, or because the warm air heating just clanked on. Toasty rooms, more than enough coat hangers for my weeks worth of business clothes.. Two bedside tables and lights (amazed how many hotels these days don't think that you both want to read!). Small but perfectly functional shower and super hair dryer. Extremely friendly staff, bilingual and friendly enough to answer our dumb questions about language in Montreal. Great value. read more

This is a no-frills hotel that still manages to be charming and very resourceful to stay in when you're making the trip to Montreal. The hotel is situated in the Latin Quarter, which was where a majority of our trip was spent dining and meeting-up with people. Very conveniently located for taking the Metro, shopping, dining, seeing shows-- pretty much anything but being in downtown proper. The bi-lingual hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, especially when it came to helping a lost couple find their way to the parking garage that was tucked into an alley-like one-way street (A staffer walked me out to physically point to and show me where to go-- much-appreciated) The hotel is cozy and very much not a corporate chain hotel you're probably a bit more used to. We were out and on-the-go for 100 percent of our trip, and I wish I had been able to sit and relax with some coffee and the paper in what looked like a comfortable & home-y lobby. The room was typical in the sense that it has everything you need when staying and being on-the-go in a new city; again, no frills, but you get the sense that you're staying in someone's guest room rather than a cold, boxy hotel-- I found this appealing, others may not. Bonus for free (good speed) wi-fi-- crucial for two people from out of the country using wi-fi as their communication lifeline. Overall, this was a great way to start a stay in Montreal. We were mid-road trip through Quebec, and stopped in Montreal/stayed at St-Denis for one night, then ventured up to Quebec City and back to Montreal, staying in a different hotel in downtown thanks to credit card points. Looking back and seeing how often we were in the Latin Quarter area, I wish we booked our second and final stay here as the hotel had everything we needed for half of the price-- with location being the most important. I'd recommend to anyone staying in Montreal who isn't a high-maintenance traveler; if that is the case though, message me and I'll tell you about the hotel we didn't prefer in downtown Montreal. read more

Very good location. Close to everything. Neat and clean as a pin. Housekeeping was awesome. The hotel kept the charm from the time when it was built but had good amenities. They have the typical hotel stuff plus a little refrigerator and some dishes and a microwave. The parking was very secure. The people below us got noisy one night and the man at the desk had them quiet as mice within minutes. Was able to leave my car and bags after I checked out and sightsee a bit more before I left the city. My only wish was a fan in the room and the shampoo and conditioner weren't the best but those are trivial things. The location was perfect and I've never seen a cleaner hotel. It had great character. My husband and I stayed at St-Denis for one night. We only paid $70 so we were not expecting much but were pleasantly surprised. While the room was basic and on the smaller side, it was enough room for a king size bed and a few desks/chairs, and it was clean with a newly renovated bathroom.
