We stayed at the Relais for five nights on our second trip to Paris. We knew about the hotel because of the restaurants below it - we'd seen L'Avant Comptoir on an episode of Anthony Bourdain's show, and on our first trip to Paris three years ago, we ate possibly the best meal of our entire lives at L'Avant Comptoir de la Mer. So what could be better than staying in the hotel right above that restaurant? For the uninitiated, this hotel sits atop three restaurants that are all under the Comptoir banner. La Mer focuses on seafood, La Ter is things from the ground and then the Comptoir is just a regular restaurant. When we ate here the last time, all three restaurants and the hotel were connected businesses. And we thought they still were. So we were shocked to learn upon check in that the La Mer and Ter restaurants had been sold and were no longer a part of the family. (It's honestly also a little disingenuous because there is NOTHING anywhere on their website or in the businesses that indicates this...) At any rate, we were totally disappointed upon arrival to learn this but at that point it was just go with it. So, the good news is the Relais is on a prime intersection of what is arguably the foodiest neighborhood in Paris. We LOVE St. Germain. It is truly french foodie paradise. I eat croissants, foie gras, macaroons, chocolates and everything else I can stuff in my face when we're there. So this hotel is basically at the epicenter. It's truly an epic location. As others have said, it's a boutique and very old hotel. It has all the charm of an old boutique hotel as well as many quirks because of the age of the building. If you want to feel like you're an American living in Paris and you want to sing love songs out your open window, this is the place to stay. If you want a modern hotel with modern amenities, this is not the place to stay. Pros: -Breakfast is included in the Comptoir restaurant each day. Breakfast is comprised of a bread and croissant basket, assorted jams and jellies, ham and cheese, yogurt, fresh fruit, juice and coffee. You can also have eggs soft boiled or a handful of other ways. It was good, but I do have to say that after five days the same breakfast every day got a little old. -As a hotel guest, you also get priority for dinner reservations in the restaurant. -You can order room service from the award-winning restaurant below and the menu is exactly the same. -The staff is very friendly and I want to give an honorable mention to Anna, who was very kind and accommodating in every single way. -The rooms are practically idyllic, with windows that open (a novelty for us Americans) and have pretty flower boxes in them as you overlook the intersection. Cons: -The stairwell is narrow, uneven and old. While we were there, they were replacing the stairwell carpeting. It took the craftsman four days and it was painstaking work. -The elevator/lift is also old and is roughly the size of a phone booth. My husband and I could barely squeeze in. -The rooms are short on storage space. We were absolutely dying for more drawers or a better way to stow all of our stuff. In the end we wound up actually shipping some stuff home just to clear it out of our way. -You had to just kind of figure out the room. At one point we had to move the writing table because there was no outlet close enough that we could sit at the table and work on a computer and plug that computer in. -You have to just watch your step a lot. Like I said, the stairs were uneven. There was a 2 inch step down as you walked into our room and you had to remember it was there. My husband absolutely ate it one night coming into the room. There was a little marble lip between the hallway and the bathroom and I kept tripping there too. It was just a difficult room to navigate and tight quarters. -And there are just not a lot of amenities you get used to in modern hotels. The bathroom was small without a lot of counter space. No USB plugs and not enough outlets in general. It was always cold. But the big tradeoff was the ambiance and the beautiful Parisien-ness of it all. Loved this hotel. We were upgraded to a suprrme room from a deluxe. CAUTION FOR US VISITORS: Their rooms are small. Must be a French/European thing. Please do not expect a room with much room. Our upgraded room had a better view and I think It might have had a bigger bathroom. The staff were super nice. The staff made our stay very easy. They ordered cabs for us when needed. They will willing to do anything to make us feel like at home. One of the staff members gave me advise on my food poisoning I had (got it from the LAX). They have a connected restaurant with great food. Our breakfast was included. Please be prepared to turn in your key when leaving the room. The staff also remembers faces and rooms which I found safe and secure. read more

The Hotel Relais Saint Germaine is charming and feels very Parisian. Our room, Marcel Proust, had a romantic view. It's quiet with the windows closed and AC on, except for one morning when there was noisy street construction. The staff considers this room to be on the 3rd floor. By USA standards it would be called the 4th floor. Because of street construction in July, the area was closed to traffic during our visit. Marcel Proust is a spacious room by Paris standards, with a king bed, a pretty table which makes in-room dining feel luxurious, and a seating area. The King bed was a little hard for me, but I got used to it. The AC works very well and has a control in the room. The AC fan has low or high speed. The shower had a half door, but no water leaked on the floor since we were careful. The shower head can be held in your hand or secured on the fixture. The tiny elevator holds 2 people but it's fine. There was always mint water in the lobby, and a very professional and cordial staff member to help us with directions or with making dinner reservations. Natalia sent someone to obtain our Paris Museum Passes! The complimentary breakfast can be enjoyed in your room at no extra charge! Or you can have it downstairs in their excellent restaurant. Although we enjoyed the breakfast, it was exactly the same every morning, and we stayed for a week in July. Breakfast included ham, cheese, a fresh croissant and a slice of dark bread, a baguette, yogurt and preserves, small portions of the same fruit every day (prunes and orange slices), coffee or espresso, and if you ask, a soft-boiled egg is included. Two metro stops are a short walk from this hotel, which is very convenient. Hotel guests get priority in the restaurant, which is a great deal, since the restaurant always had a long wait, and serves good food in a cafe-like setting. Parisian Experience On Steroids..... Pros: Charming Building. Central location. Top-notch manager. Cons: Several odd and ends. Suggestion: Book well in advance by e-mail. They are very responsive. Ratings: - Overall: 5 - Room Quality: 4 - Housekeeping: 4 - Interior of the Building: 5 - Breakfast: 4 - Location: 5 - Commotion: 3 - Outside Appearance: 5 - Service: 5 - Value: 5 The question everyone asks about Paris ( at least the people who need a place to stay ) is "which hotel to choose"? After a ton of research, my wife and I agreed on the Hotel Relais Saint Germain. It was an excellent choice. Location: One half block south of Blvd St Germain, a bustling street cutting east-west through the northern part of the Left Bank. Many major attractions, such as the Louvre, D'Orsay museum, Notre Dame, the Sorbonne and Latin Quarter are 1/2 to 1 mile away...easy walking distance. The Marais and Montparnasse neighborhoods are about a mile while the Eiffel Tower is 2 miles away. All very manageable for those without mobility issues. And of course, for anyone...watch those cobblestone streets! The flip side of being in the middle of things is BEING IN THE MIDDLE OF THINGS. Relais St Germain faces an intersection of at least 3 streets...and 5 if you make a small allowance. Restaurants and cafes stretch along each corner with a steady hum and occasional screech from the cars and carousers. The noise reaches a fever pitch between 8 PM and midnight, but revelers were heard as late as 3 AM. It's best to get a room above the 3rd floor (we were on the 5th of 6 stories), but our friends were on the 2nd and simply closed their windows. Exterior: Bright, French and beautiful. Pictures on the website do it justice. Interior: Charming. The reception area is small, but it's a small hotel. Left of the lobby is a gathering spot for several people...and left of that is the adjoining restaurant, Le Comptoir du Relais. A complimentary continental breakfast is served each morning from 7 - 10 AM for the guests. Food was the same each day of our week-long stay - A basket of breads, 4 choices of jam, small cup of orange slices, small cup of fresh prunes, glass of juice, one egg and coffee or tea. While the quantity was on the limited side, quality was high and service more prompt and friendly than in other Paris venues. One other noteworthy item. There is an elevator, but the size is rather....compact. A notice on the wall states capacity is 3 people, but that's probably with one person on the shoulders of another. It's tight, though serviceable. The alternative is a narrow, winding staircase which I'd only recommend for the most nimble of foot. Room: More charm. Our room, #52, had a king size bed, sitting area, separate bathroom and a front row seat facing a very French street scene. Essentially everything we needed for a week-long stay. The mattress was comfortable, TV workable (though only 4 of 40+ channels were in English) and shower pressure sufficient. However, controls for getting it started were among the most confounding ever seen. When we asked the hotel staff for assistance, we got a personal tutorial and the comment "almost everyone says the same thing". There were a few other downsides. The safe "broke" on the next to last day. Requested number of towels were not always present. Sofa cushions were a bit threadbare. The internet connection was inconsistent and speed rather slow. Housekeeping: Good and unobtrusive. However, if you appreciate a good vacuuming of the carpets each day, there may be disappointment. Maybe it was done with eyes closed? Service: Admirable. Marie, the manager, was angelic. Always with a smile. Always inquiring if something had to be done. Always lending a helping hand. She is what every business needs. Marie's staff was very capable and generally followed in her footsteps. Reservations in restaurants, requests for additional towels and answers to questions about neighborhood resources all went smoothly. When I mentioned to Marie an issue with one of her employees, she listened intently. Next time we dealt with that person, there was a definite change in attitude. Cost and Value: Worth it. We paid 319 Euros per night for our 7 night stay. Would we stay here again? If in the Left Bank...yes. However, we'll probably try another part of town next time. read more

When it came time to pick a perfect hotel for my weekend getaway to Paris, I had my heart set on a 17th-century, adorable, rustic hotel with exposed wood beams in the perfect location. I searched for awhile and then I remembered Hotel Le Relais Saint Germain! After having dined at the famed Comptoir during a previous trip, it seemed only natural that I'd go for a hotel owned by a chef. Parfait! We stayed in the Proust room, room number 32. Which has a queen bed, sitting area, dining area and a view over Carrefour Odeon. Room rates never change and there aren't ever any deals. I'm OK with that for the luxury offered by this hotel. Every single detail is flawless. Gorgeous art work, exceptional staff, finely appointed rooms and preferential access to Le Comptoir. The absolute best part of the Hotel Relais is the staff. They are able to book any show, confirm restaurant reservations and they even sent me flowers on my last night! But a very close second to the staff is the breakfast (included in rate). Like I said, a hotel owned by a chef! Le petit dejeuner consists of Gerard Mulot pastries, Iberian ham, yogurt, fruit, 18 month comte, a soft boiled egg, fresh-squeezed orange juice and coffee. And you have the option of dining en suite or being the exclusive guest for breakfast in Le Comptoir. D'accord, I will admit that I did enjoy having the place to myself after seeing the line that can form for lunch and dinner. Oh right, did I mention preferential access to Le Comptoir? I quickly got over the awkwardness of cutting to the front of a 3 hour wait line. 6 month wait for the Menu Gastronomique? Pas de probleme! They will gladly squeeze you in if you so desire. The next time I travel to Paris, I'm not even going to check other hotel availability. Hotel Le Relais will be at the top of my list. read more

We have stayed at this hotel twice in the past year, and it is a perfect spot in Paris. The staff is simply superb; as the hotel is small, they know every guest and are extremely polite and accommodating. The price is on the moderate end by Paris standards, but include a daily breakfast, with fresh bread/croissants, ham, cheese, butter/jams, soft boiled eggs, fruit, and good strong coffee. I have previously reviewed the restaurant next door, with the same owners, and it is as good as ever. Also to note, we received a room upgrade on our latest trip and it was deeply appreciated. Even the mini bar in the room offers very good wines, and there's a coffee maker with awesome coffee. My only warning would be to those with physical disabilities-- there are lots of steps and lots of levels. While there are elevators, there are some room that still require a fair number of steps. The tubs are steep. The hairdryer, at least in our room, looked like something out of the 1970's. The place is just quirky and lovely, but maybe not for everyone if you are looking for really modern amenities. read more

This is my favorite hotel in Paris. It is a boutique hotel that just oozes all of the charm & sophistication that I dream of Paris being. We arrived after a complete nightmare of an overnight train from Venice & were so relieved to relax in the beautiful hotel lobby. Luckily our room was ready early so we were able to get in and take a much needed shower. It was the biggest room we stayed in on our European trip. We opted to book a flight back to Milan rather than risk another shaky overnight train & lucked out that the hotel had an opening for us to stay one more night. We upgraded to a suite for that night & didn't want to leave such a beautiful room so we popped open a bottle of champagne that we picked up in Reims & lounged with our macarons while soaking in the sounds & sights of Paris from our large windows. The food is another asset of staying here. We were able to get reservations at their unbelievably good restaurant. Each course was better than the last. Breakfast was also so good. We did one morning in the restaurant and other mornings enjoying it from the lounge area in our room overlooking the square (triangle, really). The other restaurants in the Odeon triangle were also good, but nothing beat the one at the hotel. Staff was lovely & helpful in calling taxis, setting up reservations, moving our bags, and making recommendations. I couldn't have asked for better. The one note is that the elevator is one of the smallest that I have ever seen. My claustrophobia got the better of me, so I enjoyed burning off those macarons by taking the stairs each time. We are heading back to Paris next month & I hope to stay here again! read more

My husband and I visited Paris for New Years Eve and decided to spend a little bit more on a comfortable hotel in a nice area of the city. Hotel Le Relais was a very good choice. Located in the heart of Saint Germain, we were around the corner from restaurants, theatres, shops, and even the Seine. Although I love the Metro, we didn't even need to take it this time since we walked everywhere instead. The hotel itself is lovely. Very luxe Parisian decor. The concierges were very pleasant and helpful. In fact, the woman who was probably the manager gave us a slight upgrade to our room when we arrived. Our bathroom was beautiful and had the best shower my husband says he's ever taken. They also offer free high-speed wifi, which I thought didn't exist in Paris. It's pretty great to be able to use your iPhone for free in another country! One of the best parts of the hotel was the free breakfast each morning downstairs in the Comptoir du Relais. Although we slept through it a few times since it only went until 10am, it was delicious! A basket of croissants and baguettes, cheese, coffee, oranges, orange juice, and ham sliced directly off a pig's leg on display at the bar. Wow! I would definitely book here for my next trip to Paris. read more

We just stayed in Suite #34 and it was fantastic. The beds were very comfortable, the decor gorgeous and the view a slice of heaven. I've been to Paris five times and this is my favorite hotel, by far. The location is excellent, close to everything and easy to get a cab. There are TONS of great restaurants and shops within a 5-10 minute walk. The front desk staff is very nice. The attached restaurant is one of the best in the city! This hotel is a great place to stay! If you're looking for a chance to experience Paris and it's beautiful features, this place is nicely located, clean and very secure. The quaint rooms are just what you need to rest up in between adventures and where they may lack in size by some, the large community areas on the main level more than make up for it with a cozy fireplace, comfy furniture, and a nicely equipped open bar! As for the staff, hands down they are all super attentive and hospitable around the clock! One of many examples of such service was when my wife and I were checking out, the front desk staff packed us a little care package for the road with waters and a tasty snack. Hotel was very charming, small, comfortable and had delicious food. And very pet friendly. Upon arriving the staff and even the guests were very polite and accommodating. We brought a cat and they were very pet friendly here. They even went to find a blanket and a silver water bowl for her. Room styles were refreshingly different from conservative to more modern appeal (had 3 rooms). View of street nice and then the street intersection was closed for construction so it was quiet. Close to Jardin Luxembourg. Restaurant served a gorgeous simple French breakfast with yummy croissants, yogurt, fresh juice , fresh eggs and freshly sliced jambon. And of course cafe. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner...but I enjoyed the breakfast more. Lunch and dinner menus are good. Everything was good but the tar tar was so so. read more

Our last leg of the trip was back to Paris for another few days, and we decided to stay in the St Germain area of Paris, which is our favorite by far. We chose this hotel so we could dine at Le Comptoir, and let me tell ya, our duplex suite was fabulous! We had the only suite with a balcony, on the top floor, that overlooked the busy Paris streets, and we spent many a nights just drinking wine, sitting out on our balcony! read more

We stayed at Hotel Relais Saint-Germain for 1 week. The front desk staff went out of their way to fulfill our requests. Dinner reservations were re-confirmed in a timely manner and followed up with a written note. Impossible to get reservations materialized. Le Comptoire is my favorite lunch spot. Chef Camdeborde and his wife are lovely. Next door is Avant Comptoire which is a lively stand-up bar overflowing every night with lively conversation, wonderful wine and food. Perfect choice if you are alone and want to have dinner without leaving the hotel. I highly recommend this hotel for your next stay. We are booking our room for next year. read more

We stayed in the Deluxe room (the upgraded suite). It was EVERYTHING I dreamed of a hotel stay in Paris would be. Our room had 3 windows that looked out onto the street (noisy but AWESOME!!!) The room is divided into 3 distinct areas. Bathroom was perfect! Big, clean, and modern. Wow. This place, and everything about it, is perfect...location, amenities, size, and service. We also stayed at Hotel Le 6..both are 4-Stars, but this place was unbelievably better. It's $100 more a night, but worth every penny. I will return here every time I'm in Paris! Beautiful hotel. My wife and I. have been staying at the Hotel Relais St. Germain for approximately 20 Years. Indeed,we have been there 3 times in the past 20 months. The core staff of Philipe, Ana, Stana and Maria are impeccable and gracious in every way, so much so that we always look forward to seeing them again. So it is with considerable disappointment and dismay that compels me to post a serious incident which occurred during our most recent stay. Cash, at least 750 euros, was taken from our room safe, which I can assure you was always locked when we left the room. On the first night, I noticed that something had been moved around in the safe. Whereas I thought it odd, I dismissed it as just that. However, after six days it became clearly apparent that someone was using this safe as their very own ATM machine and it was then that I sat down with management and conveyed this situation to them. It's their reputation. Now I know that these things can happen and that a thief is a thief and often beyond managements control. However, what is in management's control is the response taken when such an incident occurs. Again, we have been guests at this hotel for 20 years. At no time did the owner,Yves Candebord, the on premise owner of the hotel and celebrated chef at the adjacent restaurant, Comptoir convey to us a personal apology. Not ever was there even a token of regret I.e. Bottle of wine or a cheese plate sent up to our room. What I can assure you is that I am home, they are there and there is a thief in the hotel. There is one highly sought after exception and when my favorite chef from Mistral Kitchen in Seattle told me he was leaving for a vacay in Paris to try a new restaurant and hotel I HAD to know more. With a bright red, sleek façade and a little art nouveau feel, the restaurant is tightly packed with the Parisian who's who. Run by legendary bistro chef Yves Camdeborde, this tiny Art Deco hotel restaurant is booked up months in advance for the single dinner sitting that comprises a five-course. But if you stay in the hotel you're in. Simply amazing food and when you have stuffed yourselves to the gills with homard canadien, stuffed venison and oven baked eggs, you can roll upstairs to crash.
