Wow! I brought my three-year-old for her first haircut with Jessica, and it was a dream! Jessica assessed my needs and concerns before she began and was so gentle and patient with my little one! I've had my hair cut here twice -- last time by Ashaylah -- both great experiences. Super friendly folks, cute interior, and most importantly: excellent cuts and attention to detail. I'm only genetically a woman -- I fail on all other cultural standards, so it is nice to have hair stylists who can answer questions about what they are doing to my hair. Let's update with a fact check: * I sent 3 short texts during business hours over 2 business days asking for a fix. I waited 5 days - with no response - before leaving a review. * Owner responded AFTER the review. Instead of working towards a solution, she left a voicemail shouting, "GO F**K YOURSELF!" and saying she doesn't check her business phone regularly & I should "respect boundaries". * She then sent me multiple messages via text/Yelp/phone saying I "have issues" and am "rude, inconsiderate, horrible, selfish, a victim, disgusting, impatient, Type A, anxious, problematic, unpleasant, nasty, and lonely". * Despite her numerous aggressive messages, I responded just once. I stood by my review and wished her well. Her insults and threats continued. * I never agreed to a new hairstyle. Halfway through my haircut she said, "I'm going to slightly round your edges so you don't look like a Christmas tree". That's quite different from what I ended up with. * No offer to fix the haircut, despite her claims. * My username is absolutely not fake. My birth certificate will back this up. * I've never hung up on her. Never even spoken to her on the phone. * I'm not "manipulating her words". I have documented everything she's said. * She was coughing a lot but assured me she wasn't sick. Two days later her entire family got COVID. She never contacted me to say she may have exposed me to COVID (which is contagious 48 hrs before a positive test). * The photo shows the quality of her work. ------------- I try to support women-owned small businesses. I know the impact a review can make, so I don't give them lightly. However, the owner has chosen not to respond to my attempts to make this right, so I feel I have no other option. I went to this salon to take 1-2 inches off my long bob and even out my bangs. The first hurdle was making an appointment. The owner no longer does appointments online, so you have to call and leave a message. Eventually, we got an appointment made, but she's not terribly quick to respond, so it took several days before we got an appointment on the books. When I got to the appointment, she seemed distracted. She was on her phone, with some kind of an issue with a lost dog. This delayed the start of my appointment somewhat, but I figured, life happens so roll with it. She then said she was having family drama, due to COVID. Again, I thought, life happens, and roll with it. While I was there, she was also worked on two other clients. At one point, I had to wait about 15-20 minutes while she worked on another person. Generally, I'm in and out of a haircut in under an hour, but at the hour mark, I was still in the chair, with a partially finished cut. I let her know that I don't use products or heat tools, and I need to have a cut that will allow me to look good knowing this. Yet she put product in my hair before drying it, which I didn't care for as it made it sticky and wet looking. Despite how she cut my bangs, they just didn't seem to be quite right. At this point, the stylist said I was done. I looked at the bangs and figured I would go home and just try to make them work. I looked at my phone and saw I been there close to 2 hours. I was about to be late for dinner with my partner and had to leave. When I got home, I looked at the sides and the back of the hair cut - this was not something that she offered to show me before I left (red flag). To my shock, the right side was shorter than the left side. The front was shorter than the back. And the underneath was longer than the front. Mind you, I had asked for an even bob, not a new or layered hairstyle. Also, my hair was 3-4 inches shorter, not the 1-2 inches I had asked for. I immediately texted the salon owner with photos to show what the issue was. She never replied. (This was the very same number we had texted on multiple times for the days leading up to the haircut, and even texted on during the time I was in the salon, so I know it's the correct number). I then texted her the next day - twice. Once in the AM and once in the PM. Again, she never replied. It has now been FIVE DAYS. And NO response. In this day and age, are you telling me you haven't looked at your phone, and haven't had 30 seconds to respond? Come on now. I've washed my hair since the cut, hoping for a miracle, but no dice. I paid $150 for literally the worst haircut of my life. Listen, I get it. People make errors. But own it and make it right. IMO, someone who owns a salon and has been in business this long should have more skill than to give a cut this poor. And if you miss the mark, have the professionalism to acknowledge your client in a timely manner, even if it's just to say "I'm in the middle of something right now, but I got your message, and we'll get this fixed ASAP". But to just completely blow me off after taking my money and delivering such a bad cut is just NOT ok. Don't believe the HYPE. read more

I came into the salon that she was working at and I was crying (literally) because someone had just butchered my hair. I have curly hair so it's hard for some to cut . I had never received a devacut before, however, I decided I was in dire need of one after a different salon completely killed and messed up my hair. I came here to see ASHAYLA and she was absolutely amazing!!! She's super down to earth and sweet and she just took the absolute best care of me. I 100/10 recommend her. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was I did not feel other stylists were very welcoming and friendly. I am unfortunately still dealing with the aftermath of the dye job I received here earlier this year. I was excited to try Hype after reading the stellar reviews on this page - I am naturally a medium to dark brunette and wanted to just deepen it a bit and cover my few grays. To my shock, somehow my hair ended up 2 different shades of brown! My roots didn't remotely match my ends in tone or shade of brunette. They were very nice initially and offered to fix it, but even after the re-do, my hair still didn't match or look even in color or tone. They acknowledged this, but instead of apologizing or offering a discount/refund, they suggested I purchase Pantene Pro V shampoo to strip my hair of the color (which I found very odd). Fast forward 6 months later and 2 visits to another salon to color correct, the undertone of my hair is still completely off. :( I am so disheartened by the experience, and wanted to share in case it might be helpful to others. read more

I got my hair cut about a week and a half ago and I was happy with my results. I'm still adjusting to my new length or rather how short it is since this is the shortest I've had my hair. Although I initially went in with only wanting an inch off, it became clear I needed to take more off to get rid of split ends and other breakage for my 3b/3c curls to be healthy. There was plenty! Myra took great care of my hair and I through this process. She introduced me to Devacurl products, asked what my routine was, provided tips and even finger combed through my hair during the post cut wash and condition! I'm not accustomed to Deva cuts but after that, I will be back once it's grown in more. All in all I was pleased with my cut and friendly service. Go see Myra ladies! UPDATE: My hair has been growing pretty well. Ive updated my review to reflect my appreciation for the care I received. I initially wasn't a fan of blowdrying my hair after a cut (since I don't ever blow dry after washing, I didn't think it would reflect how my style would look) but understand it is a part of the Devacurl process to help stylist see where they may need to finalize a cut, etc. After another recent hair experience, I realize I received top notch care. 5 stars all the way! read more

Worst ever. My hair is f'ed. Like I need a wig!! I had beautiful hair and with one simple badly done rushed Deva cut it will take at least a year to grow back. My confidence is blown. I'm legit depressed. I'd post a before and after, but I'm too sad. I've been in tears since yesterday. Asked for a dusting and at least two inches on healthy curly hair is GONE!! Wanted color the way I wanted: no time because fathers fay. Cool. Was willing to come back even though I should have been given a head's up. I was ultra accommodating!! Even was cool leaving with forehead stains from a roots touch up which wound up jet blue black (weird since, while the most important thing for me was to cover some gray, I did express my goal was caramelizing) FRFR: I was that cool. But now that I've the worst most horrible make me look like an old cow cut: I'm seriously angry. It's an uneven mess, looks awful with my face, and will have to wear it bun'ed/pony tailed for at least a year!! Omg. And there's no way to fix it without taking more of what * was* my beautiful hair! Because I'm not an ass nor malicious I won't call it a specific stylist, but feel free to DM me. Look at my other posts! I'm not even an angry yelper unless it's egregious and this is! I mostly post positive reviews and this may be my only 1 star... so so mad! I had to "break up" with my former stylist of over a decade with my move to Oakland and was so very grateful to land an appointment with Ana. Ana is a fabulous colorist, moving her practice from top SF salons to East Oakland! Her technique and ability to make color corrections, build and play on someone else's color work and blending is fantastic. She helped me achieve a lower maintenance color blend as I become a new mom and will have longer gaps between services. She also is helping me grow and style my hair to play up on my natural waves. I hadn't gotten a hair cut in SIX YEARS. Because of past TERRIBLE experiences. Jasmine was so amazing. She was extremely knowledgeable, positive and gave me hair advice based off of what I wanted to see from my hair. She honored how much I was comfortable cutting off and explained all the best practice for my hair as she used them on me in the salon. I had a consultation then a deva cut a week or so later with Myra who has awesome reviews on here. Which kills me because my cut was not awesome. The problem started after she washed and "set"my curls. My hair so dry and frizzy. No curls or ringlets, which is what I expect after a devacut. Another stylist determined she had used the wrong product, we went back to the sink to reapply product. After that, they offered to let me sit under the dryer for a few, but by this time it was after closing and I ended up leaving with soaking wet hair. Now that my hair is dry, the cut is just okay, it really looks the same as what I came in with just half an inch shorter. Ana the other stylist said I can come in later once my hair is dry for any adjustments--I'm still debating if I should or stick to my gut feeling and not come back. read more

This is my second time at Hype Salon but my first time with Jessica Lee cutting my hair and she did an incredibly wonderful job. I have very thick long hair yet Jessica handled it such care and with a very close attention to detail. I appreciate her attention to detail because I am the exact same way especially when it concerns my hair. AS MYRA GOES, SO GOES MY NATION. She took the utmost care of me and my rude AF fine/puffy/curly hair through a (poorly scheduled) hangover haircut. Let me tell y'all something... I have been looking for THEE person to do a Devacut on me who cares as much about my hair as me if not MORE... and I found her. But, promise you won't fill up her schedule too much? Ok here it goes. Joaquima aka Quima... she's the answer. I came in for my morning cut. I was low key nervous because the last individual who did a Deva on me wasn't really innnn it with me, if that makes sense. I'm super particular with my hair. I've gone through phases, trials & errors etc. The one thing that hurts my soul is when someone who claims to know curly hair, and proceeds to use shampoo & rinse in some hot a** water. Quima though? She's a damn gem. We talked and laughed (genuinely laughed not that fake laugh you use to not feel awkward or ruin the moment) scrubbed my scalp hella good. Used her fingers to detangle like...
