    Emmily is the absolute best!!! Super communicative, never has you waiting, and is super sweet to talk to when you're being styled! She's also super accommodating if you have to work or if you just want to chill silently while being styled. Also, her head massage while shampooing is heavenly! Highly recommend!!!

    I got my first Deva cut here a couple weeks back by Emmily and let me tell you if you're thinking about trying this salon out, DO IT. Emmily took such good care of my curls. She listened to what I wanted, taught me styling techniques that I can actually do at home, and she is so personable and hilarious! I had the best experience, and as a person who has had my share of awful haircuts/colors, I have never loved a haircut more. Thank you again, Emmily!

    I saw Jessica Lee for the second time and wow -- she really is amazing. She has a long discussion with you about what exactly you want and what the plan is, before even getting started on your hair. She gives great home care tips for how to make your curls look their best. And she is a perfectionist in the best way, I really felt like she wanted my hair to look 100% right before walking out the door. Needless to say, I'll definitely be coming back. I got bangs which is a big commitment and I was scared, but Jessica did them beautifully!

    I've been going to Emmily since 2018 and she has never failed me! Her consultations before she starts cutting my hair is always very thorough: we make sure we both have an understanding of what I want, I show pictures, she tells me if my vision is achievable and what she'll do to achieve it. I used to hate getting my haircut because I never got what I wanted, but ever since I found Emmily, I know I can trust her to give me an amazing haircut every time. She's super easy to talk to, personable, reasonable, and overall a wonderful person! In my before pic, I was overdue for a haircut as you can see by the way the long layers were weighing down my waves, so I asked her for more layers and some curtain bangs and she delivered!! My waves are rejuvenated and the shape of my hair looks so much better! Emmily is amazing at what she does!

    Emmily knows what she's doing. I searched high and low for several months before I landed on her for a color job. She was confident she could give me what I wanted and was upfront about how many sessions it would take and the cost and let me decide. It was pricey but I went with it. She got me to what I wanted like the pro she is. This was May 3rd, 2021. Fast forward to 2022, May 24th...all I'm going to say is you can see in the photos that I didn't receive the stellar work that I should have, had Emmily been able to keep our scheduled appointment. I felt like crying after wasting all that money and time and energy. I should have just passed when Emmily recommended someone who wasn't her.

    Totally uneven haircut. Was supposed to be a single length bob.

    Let's update with a fact check: * I sent 3 short texts during business hours over 2 business days asking for a fix. I waited 5 days - with no response - before leaving a review. * Owner responded AFTER the review. Instead of working towards a solution, she left a voicemail shouting, "GO F**K YOURSELF!" and saying she doesn't check her business phone regularly & I should "respect boundaries". * She then sent me multiple messages via text/Yelp/phone saying I "have issues" and am "rude, inconsiderate, horrible, selfish, a victim, disgusting, impatient, Type A, anxious, problematic, unpleasant, nasty, and lonely". * Despite her numerous aggressive messages, I responded just once. I stood by my review and wished her well. Her insults and threats continued. * I never agreed to a new hairstyle. Halfway through my haircut she said, "I'm going to slightly round your edges so you don't look like a Christmas tree". That's quite different from what I ended up with. * No offer to fix the haircut, despite her claims. * My username is absolutely not fake. My birth certificate will back this up. * I've never hung up on her. Never even spoken to her on the phone. * I'm not "manipulating her words". I have documented everything she's said. * She was coughing a lot but assured me she wasn't sick. Two days later her entire family got COVID. She never contacted me to say she may have exposed me to COVID (which is contagious 48 hrs before a positive test). * The photo shows the quality of her work. ------------- I try to support women-owned small businesses. I know the impact a review can make, so I don't give them lightly. However, the owner has chosen not to respond to my attempts to make this right, so I feel I have no other option. I went to this salon to take 1-2 inches off my long bob and even out my bangs. The first hurdle was making an appointment. The owner no longer does appointments online, so you have to call and leave a message. Eventually, we got an appointment made, but she's not terribly quick to respond, so it took several days before we got an appointment on the books. When I got to the appointment, she seemed distracted. She was on her phone, with some kind of an issue with a lost dog. This delayed the start of my appointment somewhat, but I figured, life happens so roll with it. She then said she was having family drama, due to COVID. Again, I thought, life happens, and roll with it. While I was there, she was also worked on two other clients. At one point, I had to wait about 15-20 minutes while she worked on another person. Generally, I'm in and out of a haircut in under an hour, but at the hour mark, I was still in the chair, with a partially finished cut. I let her know that I don't use products or heat tools, and I need to have a cut that will allow me to look good knowing this. Yet she put product in my hair before drying it, which I didn't care for as it made it sticky and wet looking. Despite how she cut my bangs, they just didn't seem to be quite right. At this point, the stylist said I was done. I looked at the bangs and figured I would go home and just try to make them work. I looked at my phone and saw I been there close to 2 hours. I was about to be late for dinner with my partner and had to leave. When I got home, I looked at the sides and the back of the hair cut - this was not something that she offered to show me before I left (red flag). To my shock, the right side was shorter than the left side. The front was shorter than the back. And the underneath was longer than the front. Mind you, I had asked for an even bob, not a new or layered hairstyle. Also, my hair was 3-4 inches shorter, not the 1-2 inches I had asked for. I immediately texted the salon owner with photos to show what the issue was. She never replied. (This was the very same number we had texted on multiple times for the days leading up to the haircut, and even texted on during the time I was in the salon, so I know it's the correct number). I then texted her the next day - twice. Once in the AM and once in the PM. Again, she never replied. It has now been FIVE DAYS. And NO response. In this day and age, are you telling me you haven't looked at your phone, and haven't had 30 seconds to respond? Come on now. I've washed my hair since the cut, hoping for a miracle, but no dice. I paid $150 for literally the worst haircut of my life. Listen, I get it. People make errors. But own it and make it right. IMO, someone who owns a salon and has been in business this long should have more skill than to give a cut this poor. And if you miss the mark, have the professionalism to acknowledge your client in a timely manner, even if it's just to say "I'm in the middle of something right now, but I got your message, and we'll get this fixed ASAP". But to just completely blow me off after taking my money and delivering such a bad cut is just NOT ok. Don't believe the HYPE.

    I have been in need of a deva cut since I hadn't had one in over eight months. Emmily took awesome care of me. Make sure you book the right type of appointment and you can always message or call to clarify. I have extra long and thick hair and Emily did a great job and listened to what I wanted and delivered. Emmily gave me styling tips and ways to keep my hair healthy. It's hard to really find a stylist that can cut the density/thickness and length of hair that I have and Emily I did an awesome job. Plus all covid precautions were followed.

    Ana has some serious skills & knowledge when it comes to hair coloring. She recently had done my first balayage and I love it. She's communicative & informative in terms of knowing what to expect especially when you're going from dark brunette / black in natural hair color to an ash/beige blonde. She also introduced me to Deva hair products & recommended other techniques and products to help hydrate and restore my hair back to health to bring out my natural waves especially after having it processed through bleach and such. Highly recommended ! This salon is also super convenient for me. I've lived in the area for 8 years. Nice to see the up and up coming through this strip of MacArthur in the Laurel.

    I don't normally write Yelp reviews, but I wanted to go out of my way to express how great of an experience I had at Hype. My stylist was Joaquima and she performed miracles. My hair is thick, and a combination of curly, wavy and frizzy. When I came into the salon, I held beliefs about my hair that Joaquima helped me debunk. She taught me that with the right process and a little love, I can nurture my curls so that they shine. Take a look at the before and after if you need evidence. Cannot recommend this place enough - and particularly Joaquima.

    It was a bit pricey but This curly hair girl is pleased! Loving my haircut! Going back for my highlights with Myra S. The service was excellent, every one was welcoming and there is a great coffee place at the corner!

    I have been going to Emmily for about seven years. I first met her when she was working in Oakland. I came into the salon that she was working at and I was crying (literally) because someone had just butchered my hair. I have curly hair so it's hard for some to cut . She was very kind and comforting and suggesting me trying a Deva cut. I made an appointment with her and she sure did fix me up :) Did a lot for my self esteem and mental health as well. I was so excited when Emmily got her own salon where she could continue her excellent work! Emmily not only helped me to correct a bad hair cut but she recommended products to help repair my hair and to help it grow. I am very appreciative of Emmily all of these years. Thank you Emmily ! I will continue to refer people to you that want quality cuts and great hair care tips . Excellent at color too - always gave me the best highlights and stopped me from getting that box dye :p and wrecking my hair . Thank you for everything Emmily! Go check her out !!!! :)

    I initially thought this haircut was okay until I got back to my hotel and realized how uneven it…read moreactually is. One side is approximately an inch and a half longer than the other, and the two sides are styled and cut completely differently. One flips out and has noticeable bulk and length, while the other sits flatter and shorter. This is not a subtle difference. Even photos make it obvious, and multiple people -- including an AI image review tool -- immediately noticed the imbalance without being prompted. That says a lot. What makes this more frustrating is that I mentioned during the appointment that I live in a remote area where it's hard to get haircuts or corrections, so this isn't something easy for me to fix quickly. I'm not sure how I will fix this before I go to work on Monday. It is much worse than my self cut I requested to be fixed. When hair isn't styled before a client leaves, it can be difficult to catch major inconsistencies in the cut right away. I genuinely did not realize how uneven it was until later when I was back at my hotel and able to look at it more carefully myself. I also want to add that comments or conversations about clients as they are walking out the door can make people feel extremely uncomfortable and self-conscious, especially when they later realize there was a major problem with the service they received. I understand mistakes happen, but this haircut feels careless and inconsistent, and the unevenness absolutely should have been caught before I left the salon. And it's frustrating to pay that much you have to go pay again to get this fixed
