I live closer to Pat's Grocery but the fact that they don't accept debit and are only open until 5 makes me take a few extra strides to Joe's Kwik-Way. Completely family owned, you'll find a member of Joe's family happy to serve you. Joe himself is quite a character, a strong silent type, but quirks like a funny grandpa. Sometimes he'll suggest to me new products he got in that I should try, and not in a "I'm sitting on 3 crates of this stuff and it's gotta go" kind of way. Granted, the store isn't too quick to refresh it's shelves, and stuff pretty much stays there until it's bought, but nothing that's totally out of control. While your in Joe's, more then likely when a customer comes in through the door, you'll hear them say "Hey Joe" (They're not quoting Hendrix) Joe is the most popular guy in my neighbourhood and he runs a good store too.

It's definitely more of a convenience store than a "grocery store" despite it's name but it does stock a lot of grocery staples like bread, snacks, condiments, dairy, and sometimes even the odd produce. The prices are your typically inflated convenience store rates but not outrageous. A full size bag of chips probably runs around $3. There are no prices listed on the shelves so if you want to know mroe you'll have to ask at the counter. The selection varies often but I've bought everything from cheese slices, to ketchup, to a can of soup, to a bag of potatoes (which I was sooo excited to find as I'd forgotten to grab this at Pete's earlier in the week). If you live in the Brunswick st/Cogswell area there aren't really any other options for grocery type food, especially after lawtons in scotia square is closed (6pm most nights). Keep this place in mind for those odds and ends you need to pick up between grocery days. They're open until 10pm every day which has been a life saver a few times.

I'm fairly certain this spot knows its target audience and brings in goodies to accommodate ultimate snackage. 2. They serve sushi. I haven't tried it... but it looks good. Not sure where its prepped... and there isn't much to this spot in terms of space. But its stocked in its own fridge and looks fresh. Let me know how it goes! 3. Friendly service. Tonight I went in looking for fragrances with specific notes and decided to ask her for suggestions... she showed me fragrances that had nothing to do with the notes I mentioned and was keen on trying to pressure me into purchasing them to make a sale on expensive product. when I then asked if I could smell a few of Ariana Grande's perfumes to see if I liked them she complained that she would have to get a key to open the cabinet and expressed not wanting to do so for me, so I left. I have never been in a store where the workers complain about doing their JOB to the customers and instead try to sell them something they don't want. I really hope she can learn from this and provide better customer service.

The old place was overpriced, dank, cramped, and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in decades. The lady that ran it was crabby and not particularly nice to kids, which, when you are located immediately across from a school is not exactly a sound marketing strategy. Although they promised the best milkshake in the city, I was always a little afraid to order one. The new place is bright, clean and friendly. It has a reasonably good selection and the prices are quite reasonable. They have expanded their selection of ice cream offerings, and at a dollar for a one scoop ice cream cone, it is very kid-friendly. They have also added coffee, and although I have not tried it myself, I have noticed alot more people stopping in for their morning cup of joe on my way to work. They have held little get-togethers during community events like the fireworks, and with sitting areas inside and out, it has become a bit of a gathering spot for people in the neighbourhood. My only complaint is their selection of whole wheat baked items is virtually non-existent and they occasionally run out of the very item I am looking for: such are the limitations of this size of operation. All in all, the new owners have done a great job, and I really hope the neighbourhood supports them and they make a go of it.
