I went to Hyderabad cafe when they first opened and have to be honest that the service and food had potential but wasn't there yet. Over the past year, wow. The food is delicious, looks great and tastes fantastic. Each dish has its unique flavor and is a joy to eat. The service is still simple with a counter where you order, but they spend time to tell you about the dish, answer questions and make suggestions. We just had a party for 30 guests that they prepared the entire meal for. Lamb biryani, tikki masala chicken, raita, naan, sauces for the pakora and more. Delicious. We had many first time Indian food eaters and they were all praise and came back for seconds and thirds. If you tried Hyderabad cafe early on and weren't impressed. Give them another shot. I was craving Indian food, and because this place has gold reviews, I thought I'd stop in for dinner. I was greet with a friendly "hello" and smile. Ordering was simple and after my order was placed, I could see the cooks getting straight to cooking. My food was brought to the table without a long wait. The serving size was enough for two. With a name like Hyderabad Cafe, I figured ordering a South Indian staple like masala dosa would be a safe bet. Sadly, it wasn't. The dosa wasn't crispy, parts were pale and soft, and the potato filling didn't taste fresh. Oddly enough, they added cumin seeds to the batter!! You don't do that!! The sambar was an odd, almost neon orange and SO oily! My husband tried the North Indian route with chicken tikka masala, rice, and naan. The tikka masala leaned more "mystery korma" than anything remotely traditional, and the naan was rubbery and clearly not fresh. And yes, we waited almost 40 minutes for all this. All in all, it was a miss. With so many great Indian spots around, this one's easy to skip. Go to Himalayan Taste instead! Cannot wait for Charminar Express to open up nearby! read more

Tonight was our first time dining at Hyderabad Cafe. We are fairly new to Indian food, and were looking to try someplace different. We arrived around 7:30pm and it did not appear very busy. It smelled amazing inside, so we were excited to sit down and eat. This is a fairly small, casual establishment, with a few small tables and a counter where you order and pick up your food. It was very clean inside. Once we sat down, we noticed people were constantly coming in to pick up or order takeout orders. Unfortunately, this resulted in our order taking quite a while to be ready. We probably waited about 20 minutes for our food. I had the tandoori chicken with rice and garlic naan bread. One bite of the rice, and I knew my meal was going to be good. The rice was light and fluffy. The garlic naan was the right amount of crispy and chewy. My spice tolerance is pretty low, and when I ordered I asked if the chicken was spicy. I was told that they would make it mild. It could've been mild for someone else, but it was just a little bit too spicy for my liking. On a scale of 1-5 for spice I would say it was probably a 3.5 when I would've preferred a 2, but everyone's tolerance is different and I don't think this was their fault. I should've asked for no spice at all. In spite of this, the chicken was delicious! It was so flavorful and moist, and everything together was great! Everyone enjoyed their meal here, and we will definitely be back, only next time I will ask for less spice. read more

SO SATISFYING! We literally could not stop talking about how full and satisfied we were after our first time here. After a day of wine tasting, we wanted something really hearty to soak it all up. And this spot does that in spades! We got the Vijayawada biryani and the telengana chicken curry, both of which are not on standard Indian menus. (With naan of course, though your curry does come with rice) And we were blown away. The food is (good) spicy and the flavors are ridiculously authentic. Honestly this place was as good as some places in India. Also the portions are generous. We ended up coming the next day for the tandoori chicken. And that was amazing as well. We wanted Indian food that had custom spice levels and Hyderabad has that option when you order online. The flavors are amazing and everything was hot and fresh. We ordered vegetable korma, saag paneer, and channa masala. All three were so oily it was really off putting to see and eat. The saag paneer was the most oily; there was a thick layer at the top to where every time it settled, I could pour the oil off the top. I'm wondering if they increase the spice levels with some type of chili oil and since we wanted the dishes spicy maybe that's why? Either way, we ate the food and immediately regretted it. It tasted so good but the oil made us feel heavy and bloated. Still lingering this morning (& it's not the spice, we have spicy foods very often). The menu is filled with options and they are willing to modify or customize meals as needed. We placed a carryout order for Egg Biriyani, Chicken Lollipop, Chana ( Chickpeas) and 3 orders of Naan bread. The portions were generous especially with the biriyani which had enough rice for three people. Just really great Indian food here. I don't know many Indian spots in SoCal, but I am very picky about my Indian food, and this place just hits the spot. Here's what we got: Vegetable pakoras. They were good. Just generic fried shit, totally what I wanted. Butter chicken. Not the best I've ever had but totally solid. Chicken Vindaloo. Pretty interesting one here. Had more flavor and additional spices compared to what I'm used to. Maybe the best vindaloo I've ever had? Hard to know for sure since I was hung over Saag paneer. Just great. So creamy and flavorful. Oddly, a little bit spicy in terms of heat. Not used to that from this dish. Mango Lassi and chai were good too. I'm not really familiar with the Hyderabad region, but it looks pretty centralized on a map of India. Thus, that's probably why this restaurant has quite an extensive menu of both South Indian (vegetarian options, dosas, etc.) and North Indian staples. This place used to be Indian Masala Grill and while I love Indian food, I did not particularly enjoy the food here. With that said, I honestly was a little biased and was expecting Hyderabad Cafe to be of the same level as the prior establishment. Boy, was I way off base! Hyderabad is nothing like IMG. I visited a mere two weeks after they opened and tried a couple of dishes. Note, the menu on the website is not accurate as they have a "limited" menu in-store. This wasn't a problem as the in-store menu had a decent selection of offerings. I tried the Telangana chicken, butter chicken, hot and sour soup, and the chicken 65. The flavors were on point with the star being the Telangana having a flavor profile I've never experienced before. It was quite fragrant almost like I had a bouquet in my mouth. The main thing to note with this and any other place that serves traditionally spicy food is how they gauge their spice level. Unlike most Americanized Thai/Indian places you can actually place an order for food that is at the traditional heat level that is still "on the scale" and not some ridiculous number. In fact, Hyderabad's heat level can go over authentic levels (level 9 & 10) and I can attest to the accuracy of their scale. An 8 is definitely "Indian" spicy while if you're daring level 10 will challenge most people's spice tolerance. The service is quick and friendly. The food is tasty. The heat is adjustable. Absolutely horrible. We used to come here on a weekly basis. Came tonight after being out of country for a month and we couldn't believe what we were given. Management changed, something changed. They used leftover tandoori chicken that they couldn't sell in the chicken 65 (yes, you can't fool someone that knows desi food even though you can try), yellow food coloring in the biryani and black chunks floating around in the mango lassi. I mean, lassi, really? That's not hard to mess up. After eating, I strained it to find that the chunks are herbs and spices that I'm assuming are from the used blender they didn't wash to make the lassi. Disgusting!! My husband and I were visiting Temecula and it just happened that we ran into Vijay at a Hilton who told us about this restaurant. After a day of shopping and winery visits, we decided to check it out. Honestly. Hands down one of the best places we've tried. My parents owned restaurants for about 30 years and we're from Hyderabad. I've been missing an authentic Hyderabadi restaurant and this place filled that hole. I really wish they were closer to OC. If you've never had Indian food or are used to a standardized Indian place that has food prepped in bulk, please be patient. Fresh cooked food takes timed especially when cooked to order. The tandoor can be finicky, sometimes the kitchen gets backed up. We tried a bunch of stuff to get an idea and everything was delicious. The mango lassi is on the thicker side, and is sweet and delicious. For spicy recommendations: dammunna chicken and mamsam ghee roast. Do yourself a favor and ask for spicy. Raju Gari Kodi Pulao. I'll be honest, I'm usually apprehensive of ordering dum biryani outside of a legit dum biryani place, because a lot of places just mix rice and curry. But the owner recommended this pulao and I'm actually glad we went with this one. I highly recommend it, it's only available on the weekends, so plan accordingly. It's a good mix of spicy meat with fluffy rice. We also got the tandoori roti and bullet naan. If you're going with a curry, please order bullet naan.
