After the move from Ankeny to Urbandale, we have settled on this Hy-Vee as our usual grocer of choice. There is always a nice selection and great produce. Typically I can find everything I need on my shopping list in this one store. While I love the Waukee store, I do miss having a Starbucks inside, but it makes sense because there is a free-standing store across the street. I loved the Prairie Trail store in Ankeny because it seemed to be larger, but I could be wrong. The only thing I find disappointing is how Hy-Vee like so many other retailers seems to be pushing to the self-check lanes. How can I find a "Friendly Smile in every aisle" if I am dealing with a machine? No thanks. read more

There is a Market Grill inside. Overall bakery selection is relatively fresh and have a good variety. Downside no coffee shops inside like the other Hy-Vees. There is a liquor area attached. Overall clean and friendly staff. There are bathrooms located near guest services. There is even a nursing room too. read more

Just recently Hy-Vee Market Grille launched a delivery service. After a long day at work, I wasn't about to cook for my girlfriend and I so I thought I'd give this service a whirl. It was GREAT! We order a mac and cheese burger with an side of mac and cheese ($12), side of tater tots ($2) and a kids burger meal which came with sweet potato fries, sprite, and an ice cream sundae for only $5! The kids meal was on-point, the mac and cheese burger was decent, but my girlfriend thought the burger was slightly overdone. Delivery was FREE and the driver was extremely friendly and personable! Overall, great experience and we'll definitely order delivery again from HMG! read more

If I could give this Hy-Vee a 0/10 I would. They have the worst customer service. Their pharmacy is a living hell. Each time I've come to their pharmacy, they've made me wait a minimum of 45 minutes - and that's after I've received the notifications that my meds are ready. They somehow lose my insurance information every time. They have crappy excuses for their negligence. They have a line of 15+ people, with no one up front helping people. Its like they enjoy wasting customers time. Their baggers are teenage kids who throw your groceries around. Their parking lot is a nightmare. And the food in their market grille is worse than hospital food. The location is great, if only the service could be too. read more

If you're not from Iowa the idea of having dinner in a restaurant, that's in a grocery store, is a little foreign. My wife told me when we moved here if I ever tried to take her out for dinner (like on a date) here it would not be a wise decision. So I haven't, but we've been here countless times, as a convenient place that's quick, a step above fast food, and not in a bar (although they do have a bar here and good beer and wine menu). It's kind of a "I don't feel like dressing up" type of place where you can go in jeans and a t-shirt and feel comfortable. We heard they tried to model it after Granite City, a similar restaurant nearby (that's not in a grocery store). It a pretty good copy. There are several booths, tables, and seats at the bar. They have TV's around and there are usually big tables with families. The menu is actually quite extensive and the food generally pretty good. They have a lot of specials and send out great coupons regularly, and a good wine and craft beer selection. They recently hooked up with the Wahlberg boys and serve their hamburgers, but actually the HyVee burgers they serve are just as good. Serving sizes of everything are Iowa huge. The food isn always perfectly prepared but is generally ok. You'll spend less here for a comparable dinner than any nearby bar-type restaurant even without specials. The service though... They employ high school kids as servers, which is admirable, but often without the poise or experience of an adult server. Most don't know the menu well so asking questions usually results in them going somewhere else to find the answer. Not a showstopper though. But they're too young to serve alcohol. So if you order an adult beverage it takes forever to get because someone of age has to bring it (and there don't appear to be many of those). Both problems are solved if you sit at the bar. So on those nights you don't feel like cooking, don't want to dress up, and want to avoid the bar/fast-food scene this is a good choice. This place actually has very decent food but something that drives me crazy is when I order eggs poached or over easy and they come out cooked in the center. If you don't know how to make breakfast, don't serve breakfast. Time after time after time I order Eggs Benedict here because their hollandaise sauce is really good, and the eggs always come out over hard which is very disappointing. Eggs Benedict is always over easy poached egg, period. If not, it's not an Eggs Benedict. The one time my eggs were actually over easy on my benedict, the egg wasn't poached but merely an over easy fried egg which is also very disappointing. Don't advertise a poached egg and serve me an over easy egg. Off my egg rant, sorry. Their steak and eggs is very tasty and usually cooked right. Oatmeal is great, as are their breakfast skillets. Kids menu is great but sometimes my son's burger looks half-hazardously put together. Perhaps they just need to slow down and check quality before serving. We live in the area and I order the salmon (on the regular menu) about once a week. They have now changed it and u literally get 1/3 the size of a piece of salmon than previously. At first I thought maybe it was just a fluke, but I have ordered several times now. Des Moines golf or Granite City will give you twice the salmon for the money. Major disappointment! Also, the delivery trucks are right next to the outdoor patio - very loud and obnoxious Update - Dec 2016. Restaurant is actually getting worse. Today they had to redo a mimosa twice - neither tasted like anything but orange juice. However, the problem is each mimosa had something floating in it, like food. I ordered a pasta dish and it came cold, the cheese was not even melted. The noodles were actually colder than room temperature. Manager came out and explained how they made it, unsure how it could be cold. I explained that I've been ordering the dish since that hyvee opened. I don't care how it's made - it was cold. This morning was the second time my husband and I have come for brunch. We arrived around 9:30ish. The time combined with the inclement weather left us with the place pretty much to ourselves. When we came previously, it was later around 11:30 and the place was packed. We did the same drill as last time- bellied up to the bar, got our champagne from Emily, our waitress/bartender, put in our order and went to the mimosa/Bloody Mary bar for juice. They have a nice spread for Blood Mary's and three juices to pick from for Mimosas: Orange, Mango Orange, and Pineapple. I ordered the the French toast again with scrambled eggs and bacon. YUM. My husband got a breakfast sandwich with hash browns and bacon. Food and drink included came to about $33. They do have a breakfast buffet that looks pretty delicious, but I can never eat enough to justify eating at a buffet. I've done the brunch at Americana and although very good, it seems I'm paying a lot for what I can actually consume especially when I'm filling up on bubbles also. I like coming here for brunch because it's close to our house, they have booze, it's a reasonable price, and the service is good. Last time, the service wasn't super timely however, given how busy they were, we understood and didn't really care because we had nowhere to be. Today a few others came in after us and sat at the bar. Based off the communication exchange between them and the bartender, they had been in before also. Been here 3-4 times for weekend breakfast since the store opened. Staff is all smiles and incredibly friendly. Just how you would want a neighborhood restaurant. They seem wonderful. Problem is the lack of organization. See a lot if young employees running around with very little organization. Typically have to wait for the drink order, wait for the food order, wait for the food, wait for the ticket. It takes 60-90 minutes for a quick breakfast. Food is good when it comes but it typically takes a long time, 30 minutes today and they were not very busy. We want them to get better, like the Idea of breakfast and shopping together on Saturday just don't have that much time. read more

Where is the receipt? The last two times you didn't give me one. Now I have to come back again for it because I have to take a photo of it for the Ibotta and Fetch cashback. It's not worth 2 trips every time I use Aisles online. Plus tell your kids do not grab and pull down the hatch on self-closing SUV's it strips the gears and you will be buying new struts. Always a more than pleasant experience! One of our favorite breakfast spots since we just moved to Waukee from another part of the metro. My brunch staple is always eggs Benedict, which they do perfectly here! Perfectly poached eggs with an amazingly rich hollandaise. We will continue to come back here again and again. On a recent trip for grocery I thought to myself, why night have a full meal before I shop! Hyvee market grill; though disorganized; presents a pleasant dining experience. There was a bit of a wait for one, but surprisingly short as it was the day before Valentine's Day. Once seated my wait to be greeted was considerable. Hyvee Market grill have trained their answers to be hands on and attentive. A nearby manager was apologetic and offers to take my order. My waitress Jennifer, came by shortly and was kind and attentive as well. My soup of the day was lukewarm at best and lacked flavor. the firecracker shrimp was piping hot and aesthetically pleasing! I was a bit taken back when my bill was dropped off 5 min before my meal arrived, I can't imagine this is standard protocol, but it should be noted this made me want to order my meal to so the table could turn. The loaded Mac and Cheese with sausage was amazing! Served hot, full of flavor and rich in cheese. Over all a good experience. The servers seem a bit unprepared for a busy night. Many looked overwhelmed with few tables. It's my opinion with the right training these servers could put Hyvee in the front running a for best restaurants based on food and customer service read more

Tried walking around to get stuff and no help despite people walking by... so went to Market Grille instead. Mac and cheese came out cold, so I sent it back, then it came out almost hot to lukewarm. To be fair the server asked if I wanted to send it back, and I needed to run. the manager came over and also took notes. if you work in customer service be prepared for people to send food back that we pay for and when you see someone asking questions about where something is, dont avoid them. read more

We have tried the Market Grill three times now, and our experience has been similar to Steve G.'s every time. We're asked to wait for a table when the dining room is full of available tables. When you finally obtain one of these tables, it is next to impossible to get service. On our last visit, the server clearly forgot to order one of the meals we ordered, and tried to cover it up. It is clear the issue here is poor management. We've left wondering if they've retained their usual Hy-Vee staff instead of finding someone with experience managing a restaurant now that they're dabbling in that field? On that topic: the new restaurant atmosphere instead of their old cafeteria-style set up is a terrible idea. You don't go to Hy-Vee because the food is awesome and you want a fancy dining experience. You go when you need somewhere cheap and quick. You can still access the self-serve food--the Italian express, Chinese, etc., but you have to walk it all of the way back into the restaurant area and use their servers (who don't provide service). The food itself is not that much cheaper than any other casual dining place, and now with servers, you have to tip. And yet, the food is still terrible!!! So now there's no trade off. Why would I come here for horrible food, horrible service and about the same prices and tip requirements as any other restaurant?? read more

Once again trying the Market Grill for breakfast and after waiting 30 minutes between ordering drinks that took 20 minutes to get and ordering food. We started playing how many times the waiter can walk by and not make eye contact. I don't understand with average food and poor service how this place is so busy. The only think I can think is the people that eat here regularly have nothing better to do except sit around a drink coffee and watch TV with no sound turned on. read more

If you happen to catch this place when it's not even remotely busy, you'll be fine. Great product selection, logical layout, etc. However, they use the same logic I think Wal-Mart does when it comes to opening additional lines to move people through (IE no logic). I've left a full cart of groceries at the front twice now and taken my business elsewhere because even with two lines extending well beyond the checkout, they all just stand around staring at each other wondering what to do. I had high hopes for a restaurant in Hy-Vee, considering it's my fave grocery store. Well, I was sorely disappointed. We got an appetizer of chips and 3 dips- we chose salsa, guacamole, and queso. The queso came out with a skin on top, so clearly it's been sitting awhile. I also ordered a margarita on the rocks that had a fly in it. I sent it back and took forever to get a new one. Then they had the audacity to charge me for it. I eventually got it taken off, but I'll never go back! So gross! Service is nice, but verrrry slow. This is more so a review for the market grille then the Hyvee grocery store. Been to the market grille twice now and it's been hit and miss. Brunch on a Sunday w bottomless mimosas was delicious and pretty fairly priced, but lunch on a Saturday was extremely disappointing. I ordered the steak and the lovely ladies I was with got burgers. The steak was atrocious, it tasted like they went in their freezer and grabbed the cheapest steak then didn't even bother to season it before putting it on the grill and serving it. The burgers were pretty good but didn't live up to the price point and the fries were average at best. The service was great both times. Steak- Negative 2 stars (avoid getting a steak here at all costs they are terrible) Burgers 3.5 stars Brunch- 5 stars Service- 5 Stars Overall- 2 stars. read more
