I was in DSM for a birthday this last weekend and when Hessen House was full we called ahead to Hy-Vee to make a reservation for 15. After the 45 minute wait we were promptly seated and I, personally, was excited to see this new beautiful store that had just opened. Our waitress came over and took our drink order, which we were confused why we were given an iPad to order from...when you cant actually order from it. After ~25-30 minutes our drinks finally came out (keep in mind out of 15 people maybe 3 ordered a cocktail that would need to be made). Half of the beers that came out were wrong, some didn't even get their drinks for another 15 minutes. Unacceptable. We finally got our order taken and we we're all starving at this point. We watched as the booths around us were seated, ordered and ate and left multiple times before anyone had even come to check on us. We pulled the waitress aside several times to ask when our food would be coming and the answer was always "shortly". We eventually talked to the manager who was very helpful and said he would make it a priority to have our food out as soon as possible. After about an hour and forty-five minutes our dishes started to come out. Those who ordered appetizers never got them. The plates were burning hot and the food was lukewarm at best, so they had just been back there sitting under the heaters. Two people never even got their food. I ordered the Sicilian flatbread pizza and a side salad. The star of the meal was the side salad, and that's just sad. I had high expectations coming to the market grill, I am a huge Hy-Vee fan and have never had poor service at any of their other locations. Thankfully, the manager saw how underwhelmed we were with the experience and the food was comp'd for us - Sadly, I will never be back. read more

What's interesting about the Hy-Vee's Market Grille is that they have a bit of everything in the menu - Mexican, pizza, pasta, burgers, sushi - but as a hungry patron, would you rather to go Market Grille, or would you rather sample the original and specialty locales all over Court and the East Village? For example, the crab rangoon flatbread. It was doughy, cold, and $9. Just go to Fong's and get a slice of crispy, warm, and cheesy crab rangoon pizza. Some of the pricing is just kind of ridiculous for a grocery store competing with well-established local bites that have earned that $12-$15 price sticker on their quality sushi or are actually able to cook a $30 filet to medium-rare perfection. The design of the restaurant itself is very sterile. The bar's atmosphere looks more appropriate with the big cold room of different wines, but the dining room just tells me "Yep, you're in a grocery store aisle." What's cool is the outdoor seating as it overlooks Court Avenue, but it's very compact and I feel bad for the servers having to shuffle in and out of the one entrance and then squeeze behind the tables. The burgers are redeemable, and I heard that Hy-Vee is going to be involved in Mark Wahlberg's Wahlburgers restaurants - so why not do one thing magnificently instead of ten things badly? Focus on them burgs, Hy-Vee! The store itself is pretty fantastic to have in downtown Des Moines. The design is sleek and industrial. They have a wonderful beer and liquor selection and their bakery always looks fantastic. They have great cupcakes. Their cakes look fantastic. They have pies, lemon bars, blondies, brownies, truffles, donuts, and I'm sure a lot of other stuff I'm missing. Although I dig the grocery store, I don't particularly like corporations masquerading as "hip and urban" stealing the deserved business of well-established local restaurants with watered down imitations of their dishes. The exterior of the store also falls into that odd "this isn't a box, we swear! Look at the funky colors we have all over this building!" kind of architecture. They do have an AMAZING amount of specials they employ to even get people in the restaurant, so, if anything, go that route. read more

I need to review my rating after months of visiting this store. The Mexican food....still not a fan. The oriental food cooked in front of you-good. The other foods cooked in your face-not a fan. The cool brew tasting and take home-cool if you need to have a beer match your purse guy's...you know who you are..... This is supposed to be a high end shop-not a grocery store.....but their produce sucks compared to what you can get in the farmers market right in front of their store.Their produce buyer needs to have their but kicked.They should know better......green onions that are small and pale....bell peppers that are showing signs of being in a dumpster with wrinkled skin!Crooked neck yellow squash badly showing brown damage skin.Small cucumbers sold by the piece..... The meat case is not full of good meat at fair value.They chocked it full of these so called value added meats....smaller cuts of meat dredged in one concoction or another as some cook says to do that -you could do yourself for half the price.If you want good meat-take the time and go to any Fareway...really. Their bakery looks fantastic.People are always stopping to take photos.But I purchased a cake their for an after reception dinner and the bride brought it back complaining it was not what the box said it was-AND it tasted like dried out crap!She took the time to bring it back,it was that bad......most of the stuff is OK....but WAY overpriced for the quality.I do so like their glazed donuts...but way overpriced :-).... The location is very nice. This review would be a 1-star review of the restaurant (Market Grill) based on my experience there today, but I do think the store itself deserves at least 3-4 stars. I went to the restaurant at the suggestion of my friends, who accompanied me there. We were seated promptly in a nice booth, given menus, and our drink order was taken. That is about where the positive experiences end. After being told about the (quite attractive) specials, we decided on our orders. I ordered the Chef's Special sushi plate under the condition that it not include salmon, and the Crab Dip appetizer. The appetizer came out first, and was fairly tasty. My only real complaint is that the pita chips were very, very hard, almost stale-tasting. The dip itself was relatively good. The server returned twice to ask what I would like instead of salmon. She did not give a reply to a question about what my options were, but I asked for eel, and she said they had eel. She returned a couple of minutes later saying they did not have eel, so I asked for crab. She returned a minute later saying that the only options were tuna and shrimp, so I got the tuna. When the sushi came, it had three of a very orange fish and shrimp. Naturally, I assumed that this was salmon. The server insisted that it was tuna, so I took a bite and it was, in fact, tuna. I'm not sure why tuna would be bright orange, which is one area of concern. Another is that the seaweed salad was not good at all (I love seaweed salad). It was rather dry. After this, I was feeling gluttonous, and as both of my friends were getting a free cheesecake slice with their burgers, I decided to order a slice of the special (Tuxedo Mousse, or something similar). When the cheesecakes arrived, both mine and my friend's cheesecake slices were still frozen. The server never returned after this to refill our drinks, coming back only to take the check. Another aspect of the experience we were slightly bothered by was that we thanked the server on multiple occasions without once getting any kind of acknowledgement. She was fairly attentive to drink refills, only once bringing a refill to one person when the entire table needed refills and correcting this shortly afterwards, but this changed toward the end of the meal when my drink remained empty from about the time we received the cheesecakes until we left about twenty minutes later. I was disappointed by this experience because I fairly enjoy Hy-Vee Market Grill generally. Having spent quite a bit of money for this establishment, I really do not feel like I got anything near my value invested. Unless there are changes made, I will not be returning, and I will not recommend the restaurant to my friends. The store itself, however, is very nice, and I recommend shopping there. read more

I work downtown and found this hyvee to be an unexpected... great addition! I was originally worried that it would cause alot of traffic when im working - but it didnt. I dont go there for groceries because im only in the area during work hours. There are items here that you wont find at other locations. Its tempting to buy everything i see! I like the food counters and prepared food. Some of it is a better price than eating in a restaurant downtown during lunch. In the begining i found some great wraps on the shelf but when i returned on another day they didnt have it anymore. read more

Best food court/ hot bar/cafeteria I have ever seen!!! This is not grocery store hot bar eats this is freaking great restaurant quality eats! The brisket sandwich I got could have fed 2-3 people and the quality... damn! Would have been easily 20$ and upwards a plate brisket in a restaurant. I did not know the store opened a self serve check out. Terrible customer service at checkout this noon hour. Placed the store basket on the counter. There is no conveyer belt at the check out. The clerk requested , I remove the items from the basket. She also requested, I return the basket to the entrance . I was amazed, she did not ask me to scan the items and run the register, too. -Thank you, Hy-Vee! We needed you downtown! I've loved living in downtown Des Moines at various times off-and-on during its growth in the last decade. For me, this store erases the last negative of living in downtown Des Moines. -Being a typical midwestern town, we do "need"our vehicles, but this store is truly a step in the right direction. It is so nice to see more focus on green, bike-friendly, and especially pedestrian-friendly communities. -Having just moved back from DC, I have grown accustomed to the benefits of a good mass transit system and walk-able neighborhoods. I think Des Moines is ready to embrace some of those same ideals. -That being said, it has been tried here before with various levels of success. We needed a strong, resilient company to support this location. Hy-Vee has answered that call very well. The store does have a smaller footprint (good!), but it is well-organized and very well-stocked. It may not have big-box-store quantities, but the variety and selections are amazing. Every time I go there, I find something new to try or something delicious and unique. But what makes me return to a store is the staff. The employees here are friendly, happy, and helpful. -Oh, I almost forgot! The Market Grill here is one of the better ones I've tried. Check out their specials. Went to location downtown 9/1 after storm closed Farmers' Market early, about 8:30 am. I went into the store for some quick shopping ($7.00 for a small bag of pork rinds? Pass and Fuck you) and met my boyfriend at the bar. We received he worst service we have received in recent memory. Our check said Tiffany was our server. She was slow, neglectful, and unapologetic. After returning from the store I sat at the bar (it was just me and my boyfriend) and was totally ignored. Tiffany walked past me wiping bottles but never once looked at me or acknowledged me. A second couple sat at the bar and Tiffany immediately served them. She came over to where I was sitting to make their drinks and still did not acknowledge me. I finally asked if I could order a drink after sitting for about 5 minutes. When my boyfriend and I were ready for a second round we both ordered but Tiffany only made my boyfriend's drink and then left the bar to take an order for a table of 6-7. Again, totally ignoring me. Again, I had to ask for a drink. Bummer experience. We won't be back to this location if we see Tiffany bartending. This location is way overpriced with shitty service. No thanks. read more

Combining a seemingly classy grocery store in a shitty city in an even shittier state with homeless people puking and hoarding "insulin" needles gives you this glorious downtown establishment. My dumb, slutty, whore wife likes to feel bougie perusing $3 wine and block cheese, but here we are. With a sophisticated look and overpriced booze, this place is out of my comfort zone but it keeps the wildebeest happy. I love this Hyvee and I know it's taken a ton of business from downtown restaurants, but if you're on jury duty, this place is a stone's throw away from the courthouse on lunch break. I was on a trial for seven days and this was the absolute handiest spot to grab coffee and lunches. For the first several days, I had the humongous turkey sandwich from their sandwich station. Delicious and it comes with homemade potato chips. I also tried the salad bar, which is a bit underwhelming but great for a quick healthy option. I stayed away from the cake station, featuring slabs and mini-slabs of what looked like phenomenal selection of various desserts. read more

Changing my review to one star. I wouldn't keep going here if there were more options for lunch by my work. Today, I almost broke my teeth eating a "pitted" olive on my salad, and twice I've had soup (two different kinds) that has what only what I can describe as small pieces of hard hay or some kind of small hard stalks in in it. Super gross. When I first saw this place I loved it. Then when I went a few times (I work a block away), I realized the prices are insanely high and the quality is not very good. This review is for the Market Grille in Hy-Vee. Went there on a Friday afternoon around 1pm. Busy, not overly so. It took at least 15-20 minutes from the time we sat down to the time we even saw a waitress, then another 10-15 minutes to get our drinks, then we didn't even see our waitress for another 25-30 minutes! Finally had to ask where our food was and suddenly it came right out. Asked for extra Ketchup 3 times before we got it. Food was decent but the service was the worst I've experienced in a long time downtown! Not impressed and probably not going back! read more

Interesting place. Not quite a grocery store, not quite a food court. Something unique between the two. Fine for grabbing a quick lunch. The times I've tried it the options were plenty, but the food was nothing overly special, with some of it being basic lunch counter type food in warming trays. Also a bit over priced for what you get. The grocery store portion has limited options since it is a smaller grocery area. Not a place I would search out on my own for dining, but would go with friends. Grocery would stop there if I was nearby and needed something quick, but wouldn't use it as a normally grocery stop. read more

What is the deal!???? All self-check out yet NOT ONE employee is prepared to help, ready to help, or wants to help. The worst attitudes I have ever seen! No signage, you just stand there at the self check out hoping one of the store employees to notice you are struggling with the antiquated systems. Then when you finally get someone to notice you, and do ask for assistance, it is such a problem. The eye rolls start and the attitude sucks. I HATE that I have to shop at this store. I recently moved to the East Village and I have to drive to the Fareway or ANYPLACE else but this awful, poorly managed and extremely expensive HyVee grocery store. Hyvee management and ownership (locally owned???), get it together! Hire a store manager that is effective, and employees that are appropriate for the role, are willing to work and fit into the needs of this community. Very disappointing and super high prices. Living in Los Angeles I'm of the opinion we have the best grocery stores on earth, and we probably do... However today I stopped at the Hy-Vee in DT Des Moines and I was totally impressed. Perhaps they don't have the same selection of fruits and veggies as we do at home but they did have a half way decent salad bar and hot bar, store was meticoeulasley clean, well organized, employees are undeniable friendly and polite, butchered meat selection is off the hook, and what impressed me the most was the hot sandwich deli which has the best hot Pastrami I've ever eaten in my life, no joke. When in DTDM I'll definitely come back to Hy-Vee. read more

Living downtown, I'm excited to have a grocery store within walking distance. The store is usually well-stocked, the produce is usually fresh, and overall very clean store. This is not your typical HyVee, so doing normal family grocery shopping here is not recommended. For example, they do not have full-size shopping carts. It took awhile for me to get used to, but now I love this store. I have learned what they carry and what they do not. The selection maybe smaller for some items, but you can usually find what you need. This is a great store for to-go meals, smoothies, meat, and deli items. I've had a few issues with items ringing up at the wrong price, not getting fuel saver points, and difficulties with coupons, but in every case customer service has been quick to fix the mistakes. read more

I came here during the first week of operation. Happily, I found free parking and it was quite available. The store is laid out differently than any other one you may have encountered. It is really part supermarket, part restaurant. It reminded me of a "poor man's" Marianos from the Chicago area. My big gripe comes from their using automated cashiers at check out. I'm not opposed to automated tellers, but Hy Vee wasn't ready for prime time because I had 2 errors in my check out. I then had to go to customer service and wait for them to get their head in the game. All told, it took an extra 5-7 minutes to get the price adjustments corrected. So much for saving time using an automated teller! read more

The store itself is kind of a food-court-grocery-store hybrid, and I've had mixed encounters with the staff. I just want to say that I love coming to the Starbucks at that Hy-Vee. Its so close to my job the workers there always greet me right when I walk in they now what I want and even sometimes offer me to try new drinks. The Starbucks workers are very nice and always upbeat. I have been working in customer service for 18 years and every time I get coffee or strawberry refresher I always learn something new on how to be a better customer service representative. What planned on being a FriDATE turned into a Friday the 13th nightmare. The chef special looked good, but boy was I wrong. Over cooked shrimp and butter noodles combined to be a bland and unimpressive meal. The saving grace was the service, which apologized for the meal and was genuinely interested in feedback. A+ for your catering team! I had an event on Saturday, Sept 30th, and the other company I was going to use didn't work out, so with little time to accommodate my request, I went to Hy-Vee downtown. I met with Laken -- even though it was her day of! -- and she addressed all of my concerns about the event, providing a unique menu, tailored to our needs, with cocktail sandwiches, fruit, salad, cookies and all! We ended up needing to increase the amounts the day before, and she was able to easily accommodate. She was a delight to work with. She arrived in a timely fashion and helped set things up. I can't imagine the catered portion of our event going any more smoothly, and I'm very grateful for Laken and her staff. read more

I work downtown and come in for lunch and dinner and the staff is always slow and doesn't acknowledge you until you say something, I finally asked if anyone was working while I stood around for 3 minutes and everyone walked by me and didn't acknowledge me. Don't believe the hype, if you like cheap food at a high price, then this is your place. Plus it wasn't cooked correct, -- Take it from a single guy who lives on court and eat every where downtown. This was my 3rd time here and they still fuck up again! you are better off just buying the over price groceries and going home making it how you like it. read more

The Easter buffet at the Market Grille was AMAZING -- the food to the custumer service, everything. From the shrimp, sushi, salmon, lamb, prime rib, made to order omelets to fresh fruit, triple chocolate Godiva cheesecake, baklava, french macaroons - and every breakfast/dinner/desert item inbetween! We had a larger group and right off they turned the TV to cartoons for the kids - what a win! The servers were on top of all our needs and great on every level. What a wonderful experience. We toured the grocery store when we were done and I wished I worked downtown to frequent this HyVee - exceptional on every level! read more

The Hy Vee store on 4th and Court in Des Moines, Ia is the ruddist store that I have ever been in. I am in a wheelchair and it is hard enough to get through but to have all the as I call it common people products on the top shelf is silly. Then trying to get someone to help get it down for you can be a job in its self. I was checking out when the cleck ask about some donuts that I had and proceeded to tell me that they had the wrong number on the bag, and started looking at what I had, I told her to call the manager because she had no business going through my bags. The manager came over put the number in that was on the bag and left. No apology, no we are sorry no nothing and the clerk kept telling me that I was in the wrong. I suggeted that she get a job that is not in customer service because she was rude and one day she is going to bump up against someone that will handle it in a totally different way and she really won't like that. As a person in a wheelchair this store deserve less that 1 star but that is as low as I can go. I have started going back to Walmart and Sam's club to do my shopping. I will go to the Hy vee if I need 1 or 2 items only. read more

Most of the food on the shelfs is out of date and the people who work there are about as dumb as a box of rocks. Horrible place after looking so forward to having a grocery store downtown. And don't even think about going to the bathrooms as the homeless have taken up residence in there. Ugh! read more
