The Price Chopper moved into this store location some years ago, replacing the neighborhood Dahl's operation. While I lamented the loss of Dahl's at the time, Price Chopper has won me over with their variety of products, span of price points, and good service. Aside from goods-in-aisle, The Chopper has a nice deli, bakery (love their apple fritters), and pharmacy. Things to know: * There is a can return room onsite, but it is not open during all business hours. * As of this review, there is no ATM machine. read more

Hostile atmosphere due to the bald manager, the customer service counter supervisor and one cashier. Meat is bad quality, frozen pizzas taste freezer burnt and there are rarely deals. Why would anyone shop here. People complain about prices in Hen House and HyVee, I see no difference. I needed some creamer,stopped at the one in OP, found the creamer on sale, $1.00 off and only 7.99 a bottle. So I left and went to WM where it has been 3.95 for the last 6 months. I find most of their products to be about 33% more expensive. And nothing to justify the increased prices, just greed. read more

Really tough to compete with HY VEE when it comes to Local Grocery stores, but I will say.. Price Chopper has some of the nicest folks I have ever met working for them! They always are very sweet and try to talk and make you feel at home! Price Chopper has also expanded some of it's vegan options on fake meat, meals and other things.. Which I dig. They have also expanded their booze dept. since they opened. They have a nice seating area, with free WiFi too. Big parking lot, and a nice pharmacy that never seems to busy to ask a question! A surprising amount of higher quality items including organic and a good variety of just fresh vegetables in general at this Ingersoll store. A rather large liquor and beer store which is part of the grocery store itself. a nice little flower shop if you need to get a quick bouquet. The meats are alright they do have some great deals for families if you are needing to cook for a large amount of people. The staff try to be as helpful as they can and provide you with whatever assistance they can. In general that will have the same can goods that you'll find it most other grocery stores it has some ethnic foods been really not very many but that's not it's specialty. read more

Price Chopper is within walking distance from our home, and we tend to shop there for quick runs to the store. They have a surprisingly great "health foods" freezer section, where I can usually find my GF breads and dairy-free items. Their meat is really cheap, same with their produce. They've also got a pretty substantial alcohol section. Prices are always fair, sometimes cheaper than other local chains. The store hasn't been updated much after moving in the old Dahl's, and they could absolutely benefit from some new lighting, flooring, and checkout lanes. Inside is a bank (Collins Credit Union), a pharmacy, and a customer service counter with all of the normal services that a grocery store might offer. Staff is always very friendly and ready to help, but the checkout process here always takes 5 times longer than any other store. Most of the time though, it's because they remember their regular shoppers and take the time for conversation and to maintain those relationships. Always a silver lining. Their hot foods and bakery section always seem to be pretty clean and stocked here. They also have a very large, comfortable seating area where you can eat or even take a break while shopping, and it does have outside seating. In the warm months, they do grill outs, have live music, and offer a lot of seasonal deals on produce. If you're looking for a place to shop that isn't Hy-Vee, definitely give Price Chopper a look. read more

So disappointed in their bakery. I ordered a birthday cake in-person on Friday afternoon for pick up at 4p on Monday. They called and left a VM on Saturday saying they couldn't do the design I wanted. When I called back, I talked to the manager, and we agreed to do just words. Then I called on Monday AM to check on it and was told they wouldn't have any cake for me at all - as no yellow cake was available that day and the decorator was on vacation. Unfortunately found myself with a wicked cold and had to get something for that and another prescription filled. The people working at the Ingersoll pharmacy were super nice and friendly, I had to wait 10 mins so got to wander the store and pick up some random stuff like cat food,tissues, soup, avacados,etc. When I got back to the pharmacy counter there was some sort of mix up with my prescription card-It was expired and they haven't sent a new one yet and they couldnt get anyone on the phone from my insurance, ughh. I was expecting a big ordeal and and a long wait but they were able to hook me up with my scrips for a very good price without using my insurance card! $20 in all for what usually costs me at least $50 for just one! I come here all the time! Their cafe area has a fireplace and comfy chairs and free wifi. The service counter will take care of all domestic shipping needs. Staff is generally really nice, prices reasonable. Good alcohol section, too! In general: HUGE improvement over the previous Inger-dhals. Cons: the seal on some olives I bought was broken. I didn't realize until I got home and it was gross. I had to throw them out. Also, no one would serve me at the meat counter. A woman cutting a tortilla roll cheerfully said hi to me but never stopped what she was doing. I waited and watched as another wearing headphones also made eye contact and kept going. So, I gave up didn't buy any deli meat. Pros: the lighting and layout is lovely. The produce seems fresh, high, quality, and competitively priced. Also, it was an above average floral department. Better than the hyvee options in the area. The employees would not sell my 15 year old son Cock N Bull, the extra ginger soft drink, claiming he needed to be 21. I called for explanation and the Asst Manager Mike blamed it on Corporate, apparently unable to read the box that stated it was a SOFT DRINK. This was after he waited in line 15 minutes to purchase two items I sent him into the store for. The Asst Manager them tried to compare a soft drink ( sofa, pop, etc) to near beer. Wth apparently being able to read is not a required job skill nor is customer Service, as he just wanted to tell me why he was right or it wasn't his fault. This was a really great visit today. I stopped about 3pm and all the employees were friendly. I was able to get everything I needed. Really great deals on fresh produce, meat, liquor, and pantry staples! I've tried a lot of their own branded groceries and they're quality (especially canned food). Check the liquor aisle on weekends. A lot of times they have percentages off including sale items (makes stocking up on wine easy). Favorite stops: discounted cheeses in the deli, the $1 aisle, and fresh and beautiful flowers. read more

I drove almost 20 minutes each way to pick up subs they had on sale from from 11 am till 4 pm. Once I got there i could not find them so I went back to the deli and asked them. The lady said we are out of them. I told her that the sale was till 4pm and it was only 2pm.. She told me that she didn't know what to tell me and walked off.. I then went to the check out and had to wait almost 15 minutes.. I think i'll drive my normal 5 minutes to Hy-vee for my grocery shopping. read more

However, when I had to throw out several mandarin oranges because they were green with mold I am not so sure just how great the prices are. It's great to see some supermarket competition in Des Moines. When you walk into Price Chopper on Ingersoll Avenue you're immediately struck by the murals on the walls, projecting an illusion that you've just walked onto a produce farm. But that's where the illusion ends. I'm tearing lettuce for BLTs from the head I bought here last night and am disgusted by how brown and slimy it is. It's in such poor condition it would not surprise me to learn it had been rotting in crates for days before stocking. The vine tomatoes I also bought there last night are so ripe and soft that my stack of slices is more like a glob of lumpy red sludge. It ought to be a crime to say "fresh" when describing this produce. Plus I was alarmed at the amount of crud and grime stuck in the bowl of the scale I was tempted to use to weigh bananas. My experience with the meat department has been no better. I had to return crab salad that had been neglected on the shelf days past the sell-by date. Now that I know to pay attention, I notice the meat seems to be routinely put out days after it's been packaged, and brown oxidation often shows. It's my growing suspicion that this store receives passed-over or unsold stock from elsewhere ... days old, maybe weeks. Not exactly the pinnacle of Kansas City pride. If I had to describe the meat & produce departments at Price Chopper on Ingersoll Avenue in a word it would have to be "gross." I cannot recommend it. read more

This is a horrible store! It's in my immediate neighborhood on INGERSOLL so I visit there in dire emergencies only. Everything I find is expired - from milk to meat. Since Dahl's filed bankruptcy and took all of it's employee's retirement with it and it became Price Chopper As a lifelong customer wanted to give Price Chopper the benefit of the doubt but the quality took a nose dive, the deli food is just gross and over and over again I have gotten meat, produce and expired items. Several occasions I have bought hamburger that looks fine and gotten it home and in the middle it was grey or green and smelled foul, 1st time gross, 2nd time what the ???, 3, 4, 5....it looked to me like good meat was wrapped around meat that wasn't as fresh or possibly even rotten. Produce you get it home and it does't make it a day and if I am paying $7 for grapes, I expect not to have to throw over half of them away because they are rotten. Numerous times with dry and canned goods I get them home and product is expired. Who has the time to run a can of expired corn back up to the store right? Thats exactly what they count on. They have had numerous inspection violations and the store managers are rude and arrogant and talk down to and are rude employees and customers in the store. read more

I shop here often and also eat in the cafe. The café has a breakfast buffet on the weekends and a regular buffet during the week. The food is very good here and not too pricey. Groceries here are a little over priced but if you catch a sale it is worth it. read more

No thanks Price Chopper. You can go now. It's been a while now since Price Chopper opened in Des Moines. The transition got a lot of publicity in local news. The big draw for me is I live closer to Price Chopper than Hyvee in Beaverdale. I thought a larger company could give better prices than Dahls. At first, the loss leaders and new name encouraged people to check out Price Chopper. Unfortunately, within a few weeks, the prices went back up and the loss leaders are items no one wants. Let's talk Deli. Under Dahls, the deli was fantastic in my local point of view. When Dahls hiked up prices on grocery items, I stopped buying from them. But, I always patronized Dahls deli. When Price chopper took over, they took a great deli and just massacred it. In talking with locals, everyone hates the Price Chopper deli. The signature "chicken and noodles" were gone. They have returned but they are so watery, it's not even close to what they were under Dahls. All the other deli dishes might as well come from a second rate buffet in Las Vegas. The yellow shirts. The Price Chopper staff are forced wear these awful yellow button down shirts. I have to shield my eyes a little when they get close to me. There were studies done into colors. There are certain shades of yellow that make people angry. I think Price Chopper found it. For heavens' sake, let your employees wear their own clothes. To sum things up, in the last days of Dahls I only went there for the deli and a few things I needed. Now, I only go to Price Chopper if I need a few things. I predict Price Chopper will not last in the Des Moines market. The stores are more vacant of customers now than they were under Dahls. Here's a solution for Price Chopper, sell some of your locations to Whole Foods and Trader Joes, then buy some their stock. You might actually make some money with that kind of deal. read more
