This review is for the Hy-Vee Corporate Headquarters, and specifically for the Hy-Vee online ordering and grocery delivery only. This is my third year signing up for the Hy-Vee membership and it's NOT worth it! Hy-Vee jacks the prices up on their app and the overall app experience has been awful. I only get the Hy-Vee membership because I like to order my groceries online and have them delivered, and every time I order food through their app, I have a bad experience. Literally EVERY TIME. The app is out-dated, SLOW, and poorly maintained (other than adding the latest deals). Each time I use the app, it gets worse. First of all, I get error messages at least five times EVERY TIME I use the app. It takes me at least three times to login EVERY TIME (and my login and pw is saved on my phone and auto-signs me in... using the same login credentials each time). Lately, when I navigate to a page while shopping, I select an item, and the page refreshes and takes me back to the home screen, so I have to scroll to find where I left off just to keep shopping. A third of the food I put in the cart and purchase is not even available at the store. It's 2026... all inventory should be tracked. On the shelves, when it's purchased at the register, and on the app! Why don't these businesses invest in these no-brainer quality processes? If the item is out of stock at the store, it should not be available to buy on the app. Please let me fix your app and help you streamline this process Hy-Vee! I guarantee your revenue would go UP from your online customer sales. So, next comes the check out... I always select 'no substitutions' and 'contactless delivery', but what's the point? Hy-Vee uses third-party delivery services so the shopper doesn't know I selected those options. Every shopper asks me what I want for substitutions. The communication between the shopper and buyer is not great and really needs to be improved. All the systems used are not connected correctly or streamlined. It's not the shoppers fault, it's Hy-Vee's fault. These shoppers are trying to make extra money and the way the app is setup is absolutely loosing Hy-Vee money and the shopper. I also think there should be some standards set when a shopper is hired so the expectation is clear on all fronts. Shoppers need to learn how to pick out produce! FOR THE LOVE! It never fails that every time I order produce, I get something rotten or past its prime. And Hy-Vee does not have anything on their app to make this right. I've probably spent over $100 in the last three years buying rotten produce that someone getting paid picked out for me. I ordered groceries today and again, not a good experience. All the messages I received from the shopper came to me via text (not through the app, not from the phone number that sends me notifications from Hy-Vee, but from a new random number). The shopper kept tell me that certain foods were not in stock and 'here are the substitution options'... while trying to send me pictures of the food... but the pictures didn't come through. There was not a link to the pictures, no link back to the app to show the pictures... nothing. As the shopper was picking the items, I did receive five of the same yet separate text messages, providing me a link to 'track the status of my order'. The link took me to yet another third-party provider that told me the shopper was 'shopping'. However, I did not get a notification that said the shopper was on his way to deliver the groceries... not helpful. I'd love to know who the architect, developers and QA testers are on this app because it's one of the worst I have ever used. To end this lovely experience I had today, I received a text message while my grocery was being delivered that said "Randy is approaching with your order from UnknownClient: ####. Your driver will hand the order to you." I guess this is their 'contactless delivery' message? Quite the personalization too, I guess I'm the Unknown Client? lol! To top off this review, two and half hours after my order was delivered, I received the text messages of *the pictures* the shopper was trying to send me while shopping. I mean, come on. I'm embarrassed for you Hy-Vee. Is this the best you can do? I have spent thousands of dollars at Hy-Vee since I moved to this area and I am constantly so disappointed. My advice is - either drop the online app and delivery service all together because it's awful...or... fix your piece of crap app that could really make Hy-Vee a lot more money in online sales. read more

Sebastian was the cashier that rang me up this evening and he is WONDERFUL!! I had some questions about an item because I couldn't belive it was the actual price, so he double checked it for me. It changed the entire shopping list that I thought I needed, so it made everything SO much easier!! When it actually WAS the right price, I got a little giddy, and he was so happy that I was happy. He made sure that I bought the amount I was able to, and he made sure I had my perks entered and he was just an absolute delight! It's just a grocery store/deli/pharmacy that also sells alcohol, and if you were a person that just coming through town visiting or as a layover, it becomes a bit of an ideal situation. It's a really big space and it seems to have lots to offer including a Starbucks if that turns you on. If you're in the downtown area of Des Moines this a smart stop if you need it. read more

This grocery store was within walking distance of our hotel (Hotel Fort Des Moines). It has everything you would need here including Starbucks. They have a great frozen food section as well as a wonderful bakery and meat/fish areas. We were able to get 24 waters for $2.99 which was fabulous. I was able to pick up some snacks for my kids as well as healthy items for myself. All the employees are friendly and helpful. You could basically find anything here you would need- sushi, wine, liquor area, hibachi and more. Also, you don't need to be a special member to enjoy the discounts some items might have! read more

Back in back in 2024 the boss told me we'll keep you on but only for four hours a week for five days and then I realized I had enough. And then customers saw me and was asking what was going on while I was not there and I told them never to shop there again and it just became a trickle down effect and so now they're losing business and I'm not sorry for it read more

Nothing against the employees here, but this location is a total waste of space. They make it such a hassle to get basic groceries by making you navigate a maze, price gauging, closing all the entrances, and constantly shortening the hours of operation so they're never open when you need them to be. Just take it out already and put in a Trader Joe's. read more

So I'm from out of town on business but this place is amazing, and was near my hotel. They have everything quality under the sun...wish i had one of these in my town. Visited the 420 Court Ave HyVee in Des Moines 03/18/24 on my lunch break. Expected to get Hy Chi, but the food in the warmer looked very old, instead i got a burger from under the heat lamp, and a pair of pumpkin bars from the bakery section. The burger was ok, but seemed more processed then burgers from some of there fast and fresh locations, and the pumpkin bars where ice cold and I discovered mold on one of the bars. Alarmed by the quality of the food at this location. Might be a health hazard and quality control should be evaluated at this location. read more

My friends and I are always down for HyVee. Most importantly, the Chinese food within it! Nothing hit the spot more than the $6.99 entree. I had sesame chicken, veggie beef and rice, which summed up to be amazing. The plate was full and so was my stomach. There wasn't a line for food, and my friends and I had time to sit and chat before heading to our next event for the night. A thing I enjoyed was that throughout my night of going out, I didnt experience any digestion issues or struggles and I wasn't weighed down by my food. This is a great little grocery store with the friendliest employees! Prepared food to go, Starbucks and Wahl Burgers too! Wahl Burgers has a full bar. Excellent bakery and meat/seafood counters. La Quercia has its own section! Excellent beer, wine, spirits selection. I am here on business, working the holiday , staying at the Hilton. My review has to be mixed. True- the staff is both friendly and knowledgeable. Really friendly - sincere. They put the trainees by the Starbuck's door which can be inconvenient if you want to get out fast but what the hell, everyone needs to learn . If this review was about staff, 5 stars would not be enough for sure! BUT the prices are much too high. Compared with Euclid or another location ( even MLK) , the prices are ultra. However, there is hope. I bought some Raisin Bran for a real low price the other day and there are serious "price declines " around the store. Hey management! I get it that it is a downtown store, you haven't been open very long and you have to get in the black. BUT-all downtown residents are not yuppies! Please work on those prices and make this Hy Vee on a par with g the others. If not, I am gonna travel to another location. I really need to add to the fabulousness of the staff! I don't know if all Hy-Vee locations are like this (not very familiar with the chain) but this is an AWESOME grocery store in my opinion. The staff were really nice and helpful, although I WAS there at an off-peak time. The self-checkout was pretty easy to use and they have almost everything you can think of and everything I wanted/needed, from a hair clip to a 3-way-dimmer lightbulb to nondairy milk alternatives. In addition, they have a Starbucks inside as well as a restaurant/bar and a well-stocked food court area with hibachi grill, sushi, bakery, and more. Most impressive to me was their beer, wine, and liquor selection and I would've spent much more time perusing the aisles if I could have. Highly recommend. read more

This location always sells food that is near its expiration date. It happens a lot but Wednesday I forgot and I just brought bread home and found out it was expired the day before. It's like they purposely let the area empty out so they can sell what they have. Smh read more

I really like all the different stations like the smoothie, cheese and bread areas. Feels like a marketplace. Their "international foods" section is fun to explore. This Hy-Vee is just a bit of a disaster. As someone with a service dog for a medical condition, I am always afraid to go here, because this Hy-Vee just turns their head when people bring their untrained pets in here. It puts myself and my service dog in danger. I have on multiple occasions brought this up with management and they said "It's our policy just not to ask or say anything" which to me says, "It's our policy not to protect individuals with disabilities." When these untrained dogs bark and lunge at my working service animal she can lose focus for even a moment and that can put me in danger. I am really disappointed at this Hy-Vee's willingness to turn the other cheek because people want to bring their pets in. They need to be prioritizing the needs of individuals with life altering disabilities who need a service dog to maintain a normal life. They need to follow the law. In relation to their products, the lack the normal grocery store staples and the prices are higher than the normal Hy-Vee's. read more

Pretty typical for a Hy-Vee. I actually stopped in for dinner but did browse a little and was pleased to see Kombucha on tap and the usual good selection at Hy-Vee. The food on the hot bar was a little lacking. The veggies were very soggy. Hint, try roasting them instead. They are delicious that way. The baked chicken though was very good. Hy-Vee isn't the best but is a good option for sure. The store is always clean. read more

My favorite Hy-Vee location! This store is the closest one near my apartment. The staff members are very friendly & helpful. All of their departments are great! The seafood department is amazing, I've had the huge crab legs that are half my arm size and they're the best i've had in Iowa. I also love how their deli department has charcuterie boards to choose from. They have a book for you with plenty of selection. The sushi is fresh & tasty as well. I love the rainbow spring roll! WOW Im so amazed by the new Hy-Vee downtown! I used to live downtown and was frequent shopper the bodega! Mostly for chips and beer but I always wanted a grocery store downtown! Let's just say if this Hy-Vee was here when I lived downtown, I would probably be super broke! They have it all! An amazing looking beer selection (including growler station), Juice/smoothie shop, a Starbucks, sushi, hibachi grill, deli, bulk section, bakery, pharmacy and bar! Including a beautifully designed store, where every end cap looked like a work of art! I was so amazed at my first visit, and I can't imagine this store being here while I lived downtown. I've become a regular at the Market Grille happy hour. It's almost embarrassing but then again the half off beer and apps keep me coming back! And the service has yet to fail me as well, this last time I cam Adam was my server and he was phenomenal. Right on the main strip down town is now a local Hyvee. Built on an old parking lot had a few us grumpy. Since the parking garage across the street is also being shut down they are just stealing all the parking for us to be able to come down town and enjoy it. I recently go to take my brother in the store. He was taken a back. He used to live downtown across from Java Joes. He really wished that this was here when he had lived there. He said it would have helped him out so many nights. So for anyone living downtown this is a bonus and helpful location for them to have. He mentioned it looked like a Whole Foods but commented that it was more Hyvee prices with the the health idea on the mind for this store. I showed him the craft brews, the sushi bar, the bakery, the coffee shop, but then turn around and buy Java Joes beans in the same store with a juice bar. This place kind of has little islands of everything. They did a rather good job putting this location together. I only get down here for the farmers market, but I can see they are going to do just fine. read more

This is a review for the Market Grille. Came here for an early dinner on a Saturday, which they did have happy hour specials on this Saturday. The place is nice with a good view of Court Ave. First off they started us with some buttery crescent pastry buns, pretty good in my opinion. We ordered a couple appetizers, bacon jalapeño wantons, good, and pepperoni pinwheels, really good. Pizza dipping sauce could have been better. The apps didn't come out at the same time, they did apologize for this, but it didn't bother our group. Since we were there during happy hour the apps were half price! Now for the best part of my meal. I ordered the Mac and Cheese Burger and this was simply amazing! The mac and cheese was delicious by itself but with the burger it put it over the top. Ate it with a fork, kind of messy, but worth it. The fries were good too. Also got a regular cheeseburger, was good too. One of group members ordered the crab rangoon pizza, which came quite a bit after our food, and when it did come they brought a flatbread instead. The server was upset that the Italian kitchen people messed this up, so they didn't charge us for the pizza and got to keep the flatbread and they made another pizza for us too. Overall there was some service issues here with the food and timing of things, but the food was good and hot and the people working here nice and felt bad for the mishaps. read more

LOVE this Hy-Vee! If I lived in Des Moines, I would be here every day. And I'm not just saying that because there's nothing else to do in Iowa. The store is set up like Eataly or any other food hall with various deli and prepared foods sections ranging from Chinese to sushi to sandwiches and more. I picked up my lunch from the Chinese section which was orange chicken and rice in a wonton bowl. I have never seen anything like it! It's like a tostada bowl and you get a side of crab Rangoon dip. Can anyone explain to me Iowa's obsession with crab Rangoon?? It's EVERYWHERE! When we were leaving I spotted a sign for the best blueberry streusel donuts so of course we had to get one of those too. It was delicious and I think only $1 or $1.50. I was a little reluctant when I heard that they would be putting a hyvee downtown Des Moines. Parking is already limited and they had plans to put this hyvee in one of the biggest lots we had downtown. Let me start by saying that this really hasnt been as big of an issue as we thought it would be. They included a nice size parking lot that can be used by the public in the back which is free fot the first 2 hours. My first time coming to this hyvee, i noticed for how small it is there is still pretty much everything you need and then some. I was amazing at all they had to offer be it the incredible bakery, home made bath bombs, herbs spices and oils section as well as other necessities. They also have tap beers that can fill up growlers for you to take home. One thing that is great is that they are open late. I realize that a 24 hour downtown hyvee is not practical, but seeing as they are open till 11pm, I still have quite a bit of time after work to get my groceries. Havent been the their market grill yet, but am planning on it soon. read more

If you appreciate the downtown Hy-Vee for what it is - a Downtown grocery store, not an all-encompassing one stop shop - the you'll appreciate how great it is. It's one of the best groceries around town if you're only grabbing a handful of things. There's every section you could ever want, just scaled down. More food options than your typical Hy-Vee, a Starbucks with good seating, nice market grill, bakery, smoothie bar, convenient parking (an attached garage), etc etc. There aren't really traditional shopping carts there, just small ones and baskets and that's the point. This is a place to pass through for a meal or pickup light groceries. The isles aren't lined with a ton of gluten free or vegan options (still have some) and you won't find 8 different types of milk. There is a fairly robust alcohol selection and more floral than I would have guessed would fit. Wow this is truly a Hy-Vee like no other!! The grocery area is not large as it is in other Hy-Vee locations but the choice of food stations is amazing!!! From their fresh sushi station, to salads, to a giant bakery selection of gourmet pastries, cakes, and cupcakes, to the Italian station. I am in awe of their large selection of bulk items, especially the spices, teas, and coffee's. They have a huge selection of wine and beer! With a large cooler area for chilled liquor. An amazing seafood and meat department including dry aged meat. Everything looked fantastic and was laid out very well! There is also a Starbucks or if you are in the mood for soda, there is a soda station with make your own flavors. I loved the white peach with basil and my husband got an orange cream that tasted like a melted orange Popsicle! it was delicious!! Staff was friendly and super helpful just like all of the other locations around the metro!! And parking was surprisingly easy considering the busy location! This is definitely a Hy-Vee unlike any other, and we will be back to try some of the food stations!! read more

I was in DSM for a birthday this last weekend and when Hessen House was full we called ahead to Hy-Vee to make a reservation for 15. After the 45 minute wait we were promptly seated and I, personally, was excited to see this new beautiful store that had just opened. Our waitress came over and took our drink order, which we were confused why we were given an iPad to order from...when you cant actually order from it. After ~25-30 minutes our drinks finally came out (keep in mind out of 15 people maybe 3 ordered a cocktail that would need to be made). Half of the beers that came out were wrong, some didn't even get their drinks for another 15 minutes. Unacceptable. We finally got our order taken and we we're all starving at this point. We watched as the booths around us were seated, ordered and ate and left multiple times before anyone had even come to check on us. We pulled the waitress aside several times to ask when our food would be coming and the answer was always "shortly". We eventually talked to the manager who was very helpful and said he would make it a priority to have our food out as soon as possible. After about an hour and forty-five minutes our dishes started to come out. Those who ordered appetizers never got them. The plates were burning hot and the food was lukewarm at best, so they had just been back there sitting under the heaters. Two people never even got their food. I ordered the Sicilian flatbread pizza and a side salad. The star of the meal was the side salad, and that's just sad. I had high expectations coming to the market grill, I am a huge Hy-Vee fan and have never had poor service at any of their other locations. Thankfully, the manager saw how underwhelmed we were with the experience and the food was comp'd for us - Sadly, I will never be back. read more
