I'm not one of their traditional students but I found that they had a small judo program there and was interested in that. I couldn't find much more information on it so I called and left a message. Master Nunan called me back and asked why I was interested in judo; the club isn't competition oriented but a way for folks to still practice without a lot of the high-impact. Since I was looking for a supplement to other stuff it was a good fit. I was welcomed right away and allowed to practice for months, MONTHS without paying a single dime. I gained a lot of confidence with my throws and it wasn't until my first belt promotion that I started paying dues so that I could be officially recognized. The he majority of students here practice Tang Soo Do so the judo contingent is smaller and tight knit. I definitely enjoy seeing the same faces week in, week out. We even have annual Christmas gathering just to sit and chat off the mats. When I've had to stop practicing due to health reasons, pausing was simple and was told even though I won't be able to practice I can come in an observe anytime. Truly one of my highlights since moving to Austin.

The Round Rock TaeKwondo is affiliated with the Tiger Rock program. They have several locations in the Austin area and membership to one allows you to take classes at any of their locations. This is location is owned by Mr. Toohey and run by his wife, both are super friendly. Mr. Toohey is very good with kids. He is firm, yet nurturing. He has their respect and they look forward to coming to class everyday. I have never seen my boys so excited to go anywhere. They are even cleaning their rooms and practicing piano just so they can go to TaeKwondo. The new location is much larger, with large viewing windows and a separate room for their after school care. The family membership is a great deal so my husband and I are going to try their Jiu Jitsu program. Having been taught never to lay a hand on someone, especially girls, let alone pushing and grabbing, along with tumbling is still a learning process, but mostly positive. Its most difficult because he doesnt know what the martial arts is about. I even dont. Its not anout a knock out or hurting. He learns a move a day and may be repetitive the following day. But its not like karate where you might learn a move, repeat that quick motion, and move on. It had to be learned and almost instinctual. There are steps to follow for the move to be purposeful. Its difficult for my kid amongst others to comprehend and learn and that I (and theirs) need to pay attention from the narrow seating area to recreate at home to get the most of the teaching. Overall a good experience. Waiting to experience the Texas heat in the small space with large attendance. Btw, if you want "Brazilian" Jiu Jitsu, you'll get the emersive accent and light language barrier if you can handle it. Quite authentic culturally in this small local business. They seem to be very people loving, relaxed, yet strict with their dojo behavior as expected. I would actually appreciate more obedience and respect training like original japanese jiu jitsu.

We placed great importance on our petite 6-year-old granddaughter learning to protect her own space and herself when necessary. She's been at it now for 9 months and loves it. After attending a buddy-day class, her 8-year-old brother decided to join her, with the goal of earning a first-degree black belt by the age of 11. Master Kim, Mrs. Master Kim, and the instructors put a lot of effort into teaching the kids, especially those who attend religiously, with all they need to progress and learn their forms, their kicks, blocks, and sparring. And the kids get a good workout also. We've found the Kims and all the instructors to be the utmost of caring and respectful.
