Very responsive to our inquiry. Dan came out on a Sunday morning and did a great job repairing the gate in our fence. Recommended!

It is hard to find a handy man (or woman) who knows what they are doing and does it well at a…read morereasonable cost. Paul and his crew at PNW Home Improvements are that person. Here are just a few of the tasks that PNW Home Improvements completed for me at my home last week: Paint rusty roof vent. Replace hinges on door. Clean sills on windows. Move dirt in contact with wood siding outside. Add latches to casement windows. Replace closet rods. Clean bathtub caulk line and recaulk grout. Install kickplate on screen door. Replace pergola cover. Clean up garage. Remove trash to dump. Fix faucet on laundry tub. Paul picked up the phone on Saturday night and the next day he came to my house and ran through the list of my projects. He took a picture of each task and later that day sent me a quote with a punch list of items and a link to the pictures. The next week he came by with an assistant to start work and they kept working until they were done. As each task was completed Paul took pictures and added them to the online notebook. What I liked about Paul: *He responds promptly to my texts and calls. *He is honest and provides careful estimates of projects and sticks to them. *He knows what he is doing and does his work quickly and carefully. I trust Paul and his PNW Home Improvements team to do a good job.

I was trying to get away with yet another summer in my 1960's apartment + original windows without an AC unit. With our impending heat wave of almost a week of 99+ degrees I needed this project done ASAP. I contacted him on Tuesday night and we scheduled for Friday for an initial scope out. Saturday the job was done, and under his estimated costs. I was happy to pay his weekend rates for this project but will book him out further for other jobs. Thank you Paul, you were fantastic.

Our home was in need of difficult prep work, experience in correctly working with the potentiality of lead paint, undoing and repairing the previously shoddy workmanship, and taking the necessary time, patience, and care to give our home the love it deserved to look like always wanted it to. Comparing PPR with other painting contractors we worked with is night and day. It was immediately apparent that PPR was better trained and more accustomed to working on older Portland homes than anyone else. The amount of care and craft they put into the prep needed for our house was exactly the attention to detail you'd want to see in a project like this. And the end result has left us so happy. We have delighted in watching both neighbors and strangers walk by and take pictures of our new paint job, and have loved chatting with them about the exceptional work that was done. Recommending Portland Painting & Restoration has been a no-brainer. All have agreed their work looks outstanding. PPR's communication, transparency, deep knowledge, craftsmanship, skill, *pride in their work*--everything top to bottom--has been top notch. These are the professionals you are looking for. No question about it.

They also communicated every step of the way! Alex was the lead project manager, both times, and is friendly and professional. Zsolt was the lead painter and did a phenomenal job with my space; going above and beyond with attention to detail and making the wall repairs look as though they never needed repairing. Forrest completed some handy work for me, adding the finishing touches to my freshly painted project and allowing for me to love the final product even more! I may have found a lifelong partnership with this paint and carpentry business. Thank you, PP&R, for your consistency, professionalism, and dedication to keeping pricing affordable for the quality of work produced. Until next time.

Tortoise Construction - Interior remodeling

Southeast Portland

We are very new to the process of doing renovations - for a long time we lived with what had been…read moredone to our house before we moved in - partly because it was in good shape, and partly because we had heard horror stories about the way things could go wrong with contractors. Finally arriving at a place in our lives to be able to do some things we've always wanted to do, I collected estimates for a bathroom remodel. Mike was the only one to come out to the house and look over the entire picture when he heard that there were some unknown plumbing issues. Another estimate was from a firm with many good reviews, but which was more of a cookie cutter approach to remodels - limited selections and clear limits on the work that they would do, versus requiring us to get other contractor assistance to complete. A third was not in a competitive position, although again, they had strong reviews. After our initial discussions, I asked for a confirmation / update to their original estimates, using a sort of modified set of use cases - describing our intended uses for the bathroom and what constituted a successful remodel from that viewpoint. Two of the three responded there - one hopeful that they would be able to meet our criteria - and Mike, who not only responded how he would deal with the specifics, but also updated the estimate to reflect the additional work to ensure our success. His flexibility and speed of answering both convinced us to go with Tortoise. We're very glad we did. For one thing, our house is almost 100 years old - lath and plaster walls and everything that goes with that. It requires a contractor with experience working with these places, and Mike has that. Mike was confident we could get what we were looking for done, and he and his team came through in a big way. Also, realizing he was dealing with newbies, he was good about providing reminders once we were on the schedule about finding our materials and getting them ordered to coincide with the scheduled start date of our project. Ultimately we got help from a designer Mike recommended - Galen - who was invaluable both as a consultant on the materials and as a translator between the timing requirements Mike and his team had, and the decisions we needed to make. We ended up adding a few small finishing touches that weren't part of the original estimate, including a significantly upgraded lighting set up, fan control and medicine cabinet, molding around the ceiling - small things that made a big difference in how the finished product looks. The holes that had to be made to address the plumbing issue were also cleaned up and we were still able to keep to the estimate, as some of the materials we chose represented savings over the original estimate. Adam was our primary lead, was consistently positive and upbeat and kept us well informed of what was going on and what to expect - and while we met Anthony, Tyler, Cam and Nate, we never had to know who was doing what or when. Everything was managed smoothly. We have other projects planned in the future - and we will be working with Tortoise again.

He took the time to listen as to what my concerns and requests were regarding the work and provided a reasonable quote. Would definitely recommend them for consideration for future work.

TGR General Construction - Custom Patio Cover & Paver Patio

TGR General Construction

This is a mixed review since there is good and bad to mention. I contracted with this company to…read morereplace my siding and double decks. This wasn't the lowest priced bid, yet it also wasn't the outrageously high quotes I received from other companies. I was very excited to finally get this work done. At the same time I was working with TGR, I was also contracted with a roofing company, a painter, and a gate company. In the end, the only company I had problems with was TGR Construction Co. There are things I wasn't prepared for in this process, such as my pictures falling off the walls during the siding tear off or the cracks in the ceiling and walls created with the tear off, of which they tried to tell me all these NEW cracks (I live in this home) are due to normal settling of my home and said all houses settle with time and this is normal and not due to the siding job. I know it's not a coincidence these new and sudden 'settling' cracks appeared with the siding work. They broke through the ceiling upstairs and they did own up to this, maybe because it's hard to justify 'normal' settling with sudden stucco all over the floor. There were structural issues that arose during the project, at nobody's fault, that ended up costing me $11K more than my contract. Then I was also charged $4900 more to remove windows and have them reset. Btw, three other companies included the window removal and reset in their contract. It was considered standard for other companies. After the siding and decks were done, I was left with HVAC refrigerant lines on the ground and blocking doors and windows for my tenants, wires dangling under the deck staircase, the Radon remediation system wasn't reattached correctly and sparked scaring a HVAC technician and me, a deck rail was reset too low, refrigerant line covers were accidentally thrown out, and my daughter and I each did double sweeps for nails left behind when work was done. It took almost two months of asking for them to resolve these unresolved issues before some things were finally done. Jan 20th, three months after the crew left, I finally had the last unresolved issue handled. As a consumer, when I contract with a company, I expect to have the job done right without unnecessary stress. That did not happen here. On the POSITIVE, the crew is hardworking and really nice guys. The siding and double decks look great now. My home underwent a metamorphosis and is now beautiful and I receive compliments. I had crappy, rotting decks replaced with sturdy decks. This is the only reason I give a 2 rating instead of lower. All the mishaps, repair delays, and stood up appointments made this extremely frustrating and stressful. Could I have achieved my desired results without the frustration? I'm sure I could have with a different company. Buyer beware! Educate yourself on all steps that need to be in your contract. Make sure the removal of your windows for proper flashing is in the contract. I know A LOT of people and all my other contractors received more jobs through my recommendations. I know currently four people who are looking for a recommendation for siding, yet I can't recommend TGR Construction.
