Hush Hip Hop Tours is a must for any hip hop fan. We did the Birthplace of Hip Hop Tour. If you love the music and the culture, this is for you. RayZa, a rising rap star, was our tour guide. He did an outstanding job taking us through a journey of hip hop history and making stops at all the significant locations where hip hop started and has continued to grow. Out of all the things we did in NYC, this was a highlight for sure. We would definitely do it again.

*Review of "Rapper's Row" tour only* Have you ever wondered what the neighborhoods that spawned such hip hop legends as Run DMC, LL Cool J, 50 Cent, A Tribe Called Quest, Mobb Deep, and Nas look like? Well, have no fear... Hush Tours is here! (Did I just rap?) Recently created as an alternative to the wildly popular Harlem and Bronx excursion, this new day trip takes you into the heart of Queens, the capital of what is known as the "second wave" of hip hop. The Bronx might be the place where hip hop was born, but Queens is where it grew up, turning it into the multi-billion dollar juggernaut it is today. Back in the infancy stages in the Bronx, hip hop was not very mainstream, and there certainly was no money to be had for the artists. Queens changed all that. If no one were to tell you where you were, you would never know that such a nondescript, "Anytown, USA" locale could ultimately revolutionize the music industry as we know it. Queens is considered one of the more suburban parts of New York City, and the lifestyle its rappers lead is vastly different from those in the more urban Bronx. Despite its reputation to the outside world, Queens is not the slum people make it out to be. As a matter of fact, it was quite interesting to see the childhood homes of LL Cool J, Russell Simmons, and even 50 Cent featuring nicely manicured lawns on tree lined streets. It's been said that for native New York gentlemen looking for love, Queens is the place to go, with its two parent households and higher income/education levels. However, as we all know, this does not mean that Queens residents are immune from violence, as witnessed by the shootings of Jam Master Jay (RIP) and 50 Cent. Queens also does have its fair share of government housing, the largest of which is Queensbridge, original home of Nas, Mobb Deep, and NBA star Ron Artest. Our tour was MC'ed by the legendary Grandmaster Kaz alongside Mikey C. from the Fabulous 4. Both were an absolute hoot, and very informative, even though neither of them are the usual guides for Queens. The resident host, Mikey V., happened to be on vacation, but I certainly have no complaints about this replacement dynamic duo. The definite highlight of the trip was a visit to Five Pointz. Not to be confused with the Five Points in Manhattan, popularized by Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York. This Five Pointz is known around the world as the graffiti mecca of New York City. We all know that the greater New York area itself is practically the street art capital of the universe, but this place takes it to another level. It is basically a multilevel warehouse with the sole purpose of being a showcase for graffiti. Artists from many international countries all converge on this very spot to show off their God given talents. Five Pointz is guaranteed to blow your mind away. Why take my word for it? Have a look for yourself! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNyWcl2AMbM) Another memorable moment was dropping by Mr. Rooney's barber shop (http://www.yelp.com/biz/mr-rooneys-jamaica), home of the MTV reality show, "The Shop." During our stop, our the two esteemed MC's treated us all with a freestyle over beats, and even invited any of the guests to bust out with their own. There was one individual who is a rapper from Poland, and he absolutely killed it, flowing in both Polish and English. Good stuff indeed. Furthermore, the live camera crew even interviewed a few of us lucky ones, so don't be surprised to see yours truly all up on MTV, putting it down for the Bay. On our way back home to Manhattan, stuck in the midday NYC traffic, Grandmaster Kaz kept the party going with a little karaoke session. He kicked it off with some Rod Stewart and The Police to set the tone, and before long, the entire crew was singing along with glee, as if the bus had magically turned yellow on the outside. I continued the festivities with my own version of Kool and the Gang's "Celebrate," and we all ended the excursion with a rousing rendition of "Faith" by George Michael. Overall, the trip is somewhat pricey at $55 a pop, but certainly worth it for all you hip hop fans. If time allows, most definitely check out Hush's main tour into Harlem and the Bronx, However, if you must pick just one, you can't go wrong with Queens. I mean, how many people can claim they have seen the actual "McDowell's" from coming to America, and the bus stop where LL Cool J's around the way girl was sucking on a lollipop?

Hush HipHop tours was a great experience. We took the Walk this way through Harlem tour that was included in our NYC sightseeing pass. As a HipHop fan I really needed to go on this tour. Our celebrity guide was RayZa. I had previously never heard of him. His energy is amazing, he took us on a fast paced and fun tour. The tour was so great that I was surprised to see how much my even my mom enjoyed it and she wasn't even a HipHop fan. She even remembered August 11 1973 from the tour. I asked RayZa more about his music and I started listening to it, wow, he has great talent! I definitely appreciate the authenticity of this tour. Next time I visit NYC, I have to go on one of their other tours in the Bronx.

    Breakdance freeze in E. Harlem

Growing up in Cali my entire life! I was a pop locker at 12 years old, a breakdancer at 13 years old and a D.J. at 16 years old. I always wanted to go to the roots of where it ALL started. I finally did on this tour at the age 47years old. This was a bucket list for me. There would have been absolutely NO WAY I would have died BEFORE I was able to Breakdance on a piece of cardboard with a "Dynamic Rocker" in Harlem! Yes!! I finally did it. My dream came to past! I must say the van with it's P.A system couldn't have been any more 100% than they have it! (Don't change it please, it keeps the atmosphere as authentic as it can feel). Emcee "Reggie Reg" of the "Crash Crew" is the best in Hip Hop history because he is the history. He was as accurate as a sniper for the U.S. Marines and very interactive with all races, backgrounds, age and gender on the bus. Very professional Reggie! Oh.. did I mention how humble he is!! His hype man "Razor" gots that that talent and calling for this generation. Can't wait to see "Razor" crossing barriers real soon. He and Reggie are the perfect chemistry for Hush Tours! No need to think twice about this tour. Never a dull moment on the entire tour! Worth every dollar and worth every tip you should give at the end of it all. Me and my wife fell in love with this tour!!!

I first found Hush Tours on Trip Advisor where there were several more reviews... probably because their tours are famous with tourists from Europe. Even during my tour (Birthplace of Hip Hop) there were several guests from Europe and even from New Zealand. I'm so glad we went on this tour because it really was a highlight from our New York tour. Everything about it kept me out of my hangover daze from the night before's bday drinking. Our MC was none other than Grandmaster Caz from the Cold Crush Brothers. He was so funny and full of hip hop historical information. You could really tell that he loves his job and cares about where he came from and what he helped build since the 70's. Most tourists would steer away being brought through Harlem & the Bronx but every one of us felt right at home in the care of Caz. Honestly everyone we encountered on the streets and during lunch were genuine, hard working people... and that I can respect. The next time we're in NYC you bet we're going on one of the other tours. There's only so much cliche NY tourist traps you can visit but just don't forget you're in birthplace of hip hop! Highlights: breaking with Bboy Mean, historic locations of battles, clubs, homes of legends, and points of interests (too many to name) throughout the Boogie Down Bronx, several photo opportunities, soul food in Harlem, and a personalized signed Lyric book by Grandmaster Caz himself. Don't forget, no matter what you think you knew about Hip Hop is nothing until you find out about the roots from a legend himself.

Where Brooklyn at - Brooklyn Bridge

A must for anyone who loves music history and Hip Hop, or for fans of the show The Get Down. Good enough tour that Anthony Bourdain featured it on his episode about The Bronx. Inspiring! The show The Get Down was conceived by and created by Baz Luhrmann after he took this tour. This is not just a tour but an education and indoctrination into Hip Hop culture. This is among many things in NYC that I would describe as "do it while you can" because gentrification is going to remove the feel and authenticity of this at some point. Unless the city suddenly goes bankrupt again, these types of NYC experiences are for a limited time only! If you're visiting NYC it is best to book this through Gray Line sightseeing passes. Only $20 if you by a Gray Line City Pass. Normally the tour is $60. At $60 it's worth every penny so you can't go wrong either way. Link to Gray Line is below. Tours fill up fast so you need to book in advance but they will allow you to pay in cash if you call them same day and there is room available. http://www.grayline.com/things-to-do/united-states/new-york-city/ This is a celebrity guided tour hosted by various legends and pioneers of the early days of Hip Hop before it became mainstream. This is all about roots and understanding where Hip Hop came from and what came to define it. You can call in advance to see who is scheduled on what day. Artists include, Rahiem of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, Reggie Reg, Grandmaster Caz, Kurtis Blow, Kool DJ Red Alert, DJ Kool Herc and many others. Check out their webpage for a bio of each. Reggie Reg has been my favorite host on tours I have taken so far. I have a great appreciation for the song High Power Rapp thanks to that day too! https://www.hushtours.com/about-us/tour-guides-contributors/ I've done both the birthplace of hip hop tour and Where's Brooklyn at. Brooklyn was my favorite of the two. the tour meets in Brooklyn not far from the Barclay's center. It will take you down to The Brooklyn Bridge, past the original Junior's, past Jay Z's Stash spot, through Bed-Stuy, and back to the starting point. Many Instagram worthy moments, most notably Biggie's House, The Three Biggie Murals, The Old Dirty Bastard Mural, Marcy Projects (Jay-z's former residence) and Spike Lee's office. Some days Spike Lee comes out to say hello. We were not lucky enough to catch him that day, but we did get lucky and run into Nino from Jr Mafia as we were taking pictures on the stoop of Biggie's childhood home. This tour runs less frequently, and typically only on Thursday's. Birthplace of hip hop tour was a very good tour too! It meets in midtown Manhattan and takes you through Harlem to the Apollo Theatre, Sedgwick Ave (the birthplace of the first hip hop party), the Graffiti Wall of Fame, the Kool Herc Mural and past many sites which were featured in The Get Down. If they had not told me The creator of The Get Down was inspired to create the show after this tour, I would have guessed it just by the landmarks passed in The Bronx and the way they really drill you on the 5 core elements of Hip Hop which is what that show and this tour is breaking down for you in a see it and experience it manner. They are passionate about educating the public as to what Hip Hop is. They are big on participation. The hosts do a great job getting everyone to loosen up and come out of their shells. The more fun of a crowd you have on your tour, the better a time it will be. They will have volunteers come up and try on different hip hop clothing and accessories from back in the 80's, and they will also teach you some B-Boy moves and get you to dance on camera for a moment or two. At the end they will try to get someone to come up and freestyle if you like. Ignore the complaints from people who don't want to admit their issue with the tour was they struggle with shyness. It's family friendly and all positive so feel free to bring your kids. Local rapper Rayza co-hosts the tour and don't let him get out of there without freestyling for you because he is a monster when he lets loose! So good that I was searching for links to try and find music from him once the tour was over. The bus is air conditioned and comfy. You will jump on and off as you go from site to site. Lots of Classic Hip Hop songs blasting to set the mood, Empire State of Mind, DWYCK, High Power Rapp, and others. I don't do tours and Broadway shows, but I loved every moment of both of these tours and want to do some of the others they offer. I will be purchasing a Grey Line Sightseeing pass next time around just so I can do each tour that I haven't done yet, or go do some of them over and enjoy meeting the different legends of Hip Hop that host it. In the 21st century, Hip Hop is the new blues, NYC is the new Mississippi Delta, and these hip hop legends have found a way to become curators and ambassadors of one of the most important movements that ever came out of NYC. Now lets hear it for New York!!!

Sent a message to see what was recommended as far as the availability of a wait list or moving tickets from walking to bus tour would be easy. Scott himself responded, almost immediately with his recommendations. Purchased the walking tour tickets, put ourselves on the wait list for the bus tour and watched emails like a hawk for the few days before our scheduled date. The pizza tour Gods smiled on us and the wait list opened up. I called to get our tickets moved and talked to Scott who handled the whole transfer quickly for me because once the wait list opens up it opens up for everyone on it. He was very helpful in scoring those seats for us and understood the urgency. LOL. That's ALL before we even got to our first meeting place. We met the tour and Scott at Keste in the Financial District. I had read in my research that the tour stops aren't planned ahead and I was skeptical, but you could see him figuring it out as he figured out his group for the day. One of the attendees had taken the tour a year prior, they played a game of guess the spot so he didn't repeat stops for her and the very large group of family that she brought with her on this tour. There was one request for a spot in Brooklyn but he couldn't make it happen due to their hours, not that he wouldn't have moved heaven and earth if he could have. We had a smaller than usual tour group because of timing and a LI RR strike and you could just see that this opened up other options for places to go. After Keste we were able to do two stops in the Bronx, one in East Harlem. There was even an ice cream, water ice store next door to the last pizzeria. So much thought went into this route. Scott was able to take this group to places he hadn't been to in quite some time due to the distance and size of the group. Back to Keste-- what tour guide takes his entire group and takes over the kitchen, helping himself to dough balls and creating pies as he discussed pizza history?? We saw the kitchen and oven in each establishment and each shop was welcoming and friendly. Scott is a wealth of knowledge and enjoyed sharing his story and the story of all of the stops we visited. Pizza is an absolute passion project for him. Highly recommend!

Five stars for Scott's Pizza Tours, and that's only because six is not an option Yelp provides…read more Imagine a man who has taken the idea of pizza, which most people treat as a thing you fold in half on a street corner, and decided it deserves a Rosetta Stone. That man is Scott. We met him at Keste in the Financial District, and before he said much of anything, I noticed something unusual. Several of the people on our tour had done it before. They were back for more. That seemed as telling as anything else. People do not go on vacation and repeat the same bus ride unless something extraordinary is waiting for them on the other end. Scott does not work from a script. He looks at the group, he looks at the day, and then he consults the secret weather system in his head. Out came our route. Four stops, starting at our meeting point in Manhattan's Financial District and three more scattered like wayward toppings on the city map. Queens. The Bronx. Harlem. Lucky us. Scott told us that combination hardly ever happens. To him it was chance. To the rest of us it was magic. The stops themselves were like chapters in a book. At Keste we learned about the precision of Neapolitan tradition. At Patsy's in Harlem we felt the weight of history, coal ovens burning with the same stubbornness they have for generations. At Mario's on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, an owner with stories longer than the line outside the door talked to us like we were old friends. At Philomena's in Queens, Scott was so at home that he even took a customer's order when the restaurant was swamped by our presence. Every stop had its secrets revealed. Oven temperatures. Dough hydration percentages. Family feuds. Bake times. Flour suppliers. How long a pizza can sit before the soul leaks out of it. Scott called over owners, opened kitchen doors, and invited us to peer inside the fiery mouths of the ovens like pilgrims gazing at sacred relics. Scott himself is difficult to explain without sounding untrustworthy. He is a human encyclopedia with a perfectly tuned sense of joy. He has a Rolodex in his brain that seems to contain the phone number of every pizza maker on earth. I mentioned Hamilton and he talks about Papa's and DeLorenzo's as if we were neighbors. Others mentioned Seattle and Las Vegas, and he told them where to eat, who to meet, and when to go. He casually suggested lowering the water percentage from 66 to 63 for another guest's home pizza dough, as if adjusting the tides. Then he mentioned that after our tour he would be home making 16 doughs for his guides, who were planning to test a new oven. I believed him. He also radiates decency. He runs Slice Out Hunger, a nonprofit that takes the love of pizza and turns it into meals for people who need them most. It is good to know a person can devote their life to melted cheese and still be entirely serious about kindness. This tour filled us with more than pizza. It gave us a sense of belonging. Everyone, from my ten year old to a pizza shop owner who happened to be along for the ride, was entertained and educated and full. Scott's Pizza Tours is not just about pizza, although the pizza is wonderful. It is about a man who has built a community, and who invites strangers to step inside it for a few hours. If you are a casual eater, a home chef, or someone who has already built your own pizzeria, this is for you. Five stars. The highest recommendation.

On this walking tour, we will first meet in the West Village in front of the historic Village Vanguard, New York City’s oldest operating jazz club since 1935. We will give a brief history lesson about the world famous venue and its humble beginnings, where such greats as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Keith Jarret, Stan Getz, and the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra performed regularly. Next we will make a stop at one of the nearby Village coffee shops, cafes, or specialty shops. The highlight will take place during the final hour, where we will attend a live jazz concert (one 45-minute set) at one of the historic jazz clubs in Greenwich Village. The club will vary each walking tour depending on who will be performing that night; however rest assured, we will secure the best performances and spots available. Don’t be surprised if we get to see up close some of the greatest jazz musicians in the world and even occasionally the famous jazz musicians themselves. There may be a chance (no guarantees!) after the band’s set, to get a group photo-op with the band or performer, depending on the show chances can be good.  This will definitely be a truly unforgettable experience for all lovers of NYC history and jazz.

I'd recommend arriving earlier than we did (we showed up about 10 minutes before departure) because seats fill quickly, and it can be tough for groups to sit together. The pickup spot is conveniently located right in front of the M&M's Store in Times Square. Our guide, Aaron, and driver, Sergio, made the tour outstanding. Aaron shared great stories and fun facts about the city, and Sergio's driving was excellent -- smooth, safe, and timed perfectly so we could get great photos. We left feeling like we got a true taste of New York at night. Definitely worth it, especially with Aaron and Sergio leading the way!

The open top is a great way to see the buildings especially when it's your first time to the city. The recorded running commentary is informative and witty. This year we again did one day on the red route and one day the blue route. Great experience- especially Denise and Wanda!
