I've been here a few times and was not truly converted until I tried their chocolate donut with white frosting and mini M&Ms....wow! It was so good (the best cake donut ever!) I had to put it down and write this review...I don't know the name of this donut but it's to die for! The donut was one of six I received in the Hurts A Little assorted half dozen for $13...there was a donut with pink frosting and sprinkles, one with white frosting and mini-Reese's, a very chocolate-y looking one, and two others I really have no idea, but which look and I'm sure will taste delicious. The shop is conveniently located by the Coralville public library and a theater. The first time I stopped by I picked up a dozen, including a very good apple pie donut. We ordered the Homer donut, chocolate birthday cake donut with chocolate frosting, chocolate cake donut with Andes mint, and a yeast donut with Bavarian cream. The cake donuts are soft. The Homer donut's frosting was cloyingly sweet and I could not tell what flavor it was supposed to be. Stopped in to grab some donuts for myself and family I am visiting. They have tons of donuts. But apparently this store only caters to gluten free people on the weekend. Which I have never heard of at any of these locations. They also do not carry dairy free frosting. Which I find very strange. The place was empty besides one worker who was messing on their phone. Who doesn't like a good donut! We ventured to Hurts Donuts twice while visiting Iowa. We had to have some for us to try and then more to take home for our family. I think there was just one that we didn't much care for, naturally I'm sure it was the healthier alternative. LOL Upon approaching the door there was no trash or hazards. The entrance does face the street with parking just to the left. Walking through the door was the whole smell of goodness! The room was open with several tables and chairs. There was a soda machine as well. We got a kick out of the pictures so fun! The donuts are very unique and the display is easy to view with signed that are clearly legible for reading. The full menu is clear and easy to read which offers other products as well, including, but not limited to drinks. And I have to brag about the donut boxes.... showing my age for sure but they really are so cool! They also offer Hurts Donut gear if you feel so inclined to purchase. Slightly below grocery store donut quality, with downtown Chicago type prices. Frosting is too sweet/sugary, dough tastes stale. I've tried a few times thinking I got a bad batch. They have a lot of fun flavors but the actual quality isn't that good. Wouldn't describe the donut as moist, fluffy, etc. slightly chalky almost? Better than gas station donuts but again, right around average grocery store in taste. Solid 6/10, but it's crazy a place that only sells donuts sells these. First time in since I moved here and I ordered 4 donuts- strawberry cheesecake, lemon filling, key lime, & barvarian cream. I enjoyed all but the key lime but at no fault of Hurts Donut- just a personal preference. Service was quick and friendly. The donut cases could have used a good wipe down but it appeared that there was only one person working. The incredible selection of doughnuts brought us in the store, but the doughnuts themselves won't have us coming back. Though you get a bang for your buck-- each doughnut is massive and costs only $2.50- the taste was subpar. The cake part of the doughnut was not crispy on the outside which made me feel like my food was sitting around for a while before I purchased it at 10:30 AM. I picked out the donuts for my customer and then I chose one for myself, Cookie Monster. Raised (yeast) donuts are my favorite so I had to try one. The decorations on each of the donuts couldn't be any better, each one looked so great!! Well, here is the bummer, the donut was kind of dry. I was so disappointed. The flavor was good but not great. Stopped by to pick up a few donuts for a small get together and was not disappointed. They had so many options of different donuts. I tried the six following donuts: S'mores, The Jesus, German Chocolate, Peanut Butter Cup, Oreo, and Snickers. The atmosphere was really cool with a lot of decorations related to Hurts. It was an open set up and you are able to view the employees making the donuts. All of the employees were very nice and quickly served the long line of customers. I have had Hurts Donut's before and the donuts were good... but guys... their cinnamon rolls (the strawberry cheesecake kind) is out of this world!! There was a perfect ratio or strawberry to dough to frosting. I tried to eat only 1/4 of it ... however it was too good so had to have a whole half... keep in mind this cinnamon roll was as bigger than the palm of my hand so it was ginormous!! Donut shop attempt number 2 in Iowa City, first was daylight donuts, which also was not impressive. Hurts is better than daylight as they offer a unique variety, better tasting, and host a better atmosphere. My big gripe with hurts is the price per donut. Instead the donuts are dry, flavorless and expensive. We paid $21 for five donuts and donut holes - yikes! I'm really not sure where the mediocre reviews for the spot are coming from. It brings to mind the line from the PM Dawn song where he must ask "please excuse me for the lack of love." Seriously peeps, this is another high quality addition to the area! After hearing that the prior establishment was not renewing their lease and then learning of the Hurts donut folks coming in, we've been totally stoked. They opened a few weeks ago to a huge line that has continued 4 most days since. Upon entering you're greeted by 24 hours of energetic donut selling. They have no less than 30 different kinds of donuts and these cake beasts are nothing short of amazing. An interesting concept that they employ here is charging less for a dozen that they choose. Its 12 bucks per dozen if they choose them for $15 if you do. These donuts are absolutely massive. We got a couple dozen and tried to sample most of everything that was available and there, in my opinion, was not a bad one. Interestingly, the maple bacon bar was not available with the Dozen, but must be purchased separately. A small price to pay for delicious bacon! Another fan favorite released donuts with chocolate and cereal on top. Few things are more pleasantly reminiscent of childhood than Lucky Charms marshmallows and a donut with said marshmallows delicately resting atop a light sea of chocolate glaze. I'm anxious to return and hear about some of the flavors and why they're named what they are. It just adds to the mystique of a place that is awesome enough to be able to pull off a pink donut called the Homer! Overall, this is another fantastic addition to the culinary experience that has become the Iowa City / Coralville corridor. It is certainly a little bit different than what you're used to, but absolutely in a good way! These are more of a creation style donut which you don't find everywhere, they are very different with the toppings they use. I got the basic one just to see what it was about without the toppings which is called the old fashioned, very good with a nice dough consistency and flavor to it. I then got the Jesus one, which tasted heavenly if you will. It's a cinnamon/caramel type of deal. Both were very delicious and quite filling so two was more than enough.
