This review is based on the care I have received and continue to receive by both my therapist and nurse practitioner (med management) at Huron Valley. I moved to MI in November and had a v difficult time finding a new mental health team due to waitlists and the overall struggles that come with starting over in that department. For context, my background/history: I have had therapy on and off since 2007, diagnosed bipolar 1 in 2018, also struggle with PTSD and anxiety. I'm a recovering alcoholic (4 yrs sober). I have been on medication consistently since my diagnosis in 2018. So, I have plenty to compare them to... I was on multiple waitlists after my move and HV was the first to have a NP available, which was a relief because I was already on several medications. I had low expectations based on reviews and my experience with NPs over the years. The first time I met with the NP assigned to me, Taneesha, it was virtual. This was November. I have *never* felt as heard and cared for by a NP. She did not rush me or immediately start trying to change things. I ended up having an emergency shortly after that and she was immediately and effectively helpful. It meant a lot to me, especially since it was the week of Christmas. I want to point out that most places I've had experience with would have sent me to the ER or charged a massive fee for the inconvenience to them. HV did not charge me anything for this. I have met with her only a couple times since and the one time she made a change to my meds, she took a day to consider options and consult with a Dr before making any suggestions. The thought and care she has shown me is rare in this field and I'm extremely grateful to have her. I trust her. As for therapy - that waitlist was longer. :( I originally wanted a female therapist, but compromised to get in with someone faster. I had planned on eventually switching to a female; but after seeing Adam for a couple months, I've decided he's a keeper. Much like Taneesha, he doesn't treat me like just another appointment. His efforts/attention are intentional and thoughtful - I am very appreciative of that. He is also flexible with me appointment-wise and that means a lot to me because of who I am. IYKYK My experience with their administrative staff has been minimal, mostly just billing and appointment setting. I will say they seem disorganized right now and their offices still aren't open for in-person service. But I've never experienced rudeness, etc. Ultimately, my time with HV has been unmatched and I have experienced two involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations, one very expensive four-month-long outpatient hospitalization, and dozens of therapists/NP/psychiatrists over the years. I've been a patient for several years now and have been very happy with the quality of care provided through my therapy both individually and in group sessions. My individual sessions are remote over video call by choice, and bill handling is via an online system that I would rate as 'adequate'. My needs for HVCC's services may be simple, but if you just need a good therapist to help you work through your struggles I can definitely recommend HVCC. read more

The definition of insanity (they say) is repeating the same thing and expecting different results. So I must be crazy. Or rather, Huron Valley Consultation Center has driven me crazy. Which is kind of circular, because said condition led me to seek help from HVCC in the first place. I have been trying to resolve what should have been a minor issue for over 6 months now. This review is my final surrender. Well played, HVCC. The saga began when my original psychiatrist neglected to send in a supplementary prescription to counter-balance an undesired side-effect. He had written it on a post-it note, at the end of what turned out to be my final session with him. I even called attention to the oddity of that method, asking if he'd really remember to call in the post-it-note prescription. He did not. Nor, it turned out, did he even remember what he had written after being indirectly reminded. I then spent months trying to get him to follow up on that commitment, without ever being allowed to talk to him directly, always made to go through staff. The head honcho of said staff acted like I was ruining her life by asking her to please do her job. At one point I was told he was unreachable, because he had pissed off on a multi-week hiking vision quest. What kind of psychiatrist would abandon patients to the wilderness for weeks without any fill-in? Oh yeah, _that guy_, who seemed so empathetic while he was being paid (by our corrupt health insurance system) for his time. His beard (so ridiculously long it puts Freud to shame) is a nice prop for displays of sympathy, when gently and sincerely stroked demonstratively. I do hope he reads this, because he should really be ashamed of his conduct. While it would be best not to name names, it may shed light on his subsequent behavior that his surname is a particularly foul part of the tail end of the digestive tract. (Though, like Dr. Spaceman on 30 Rock, he spells but doesn't pronounce it that way.) One might diagnose his pathological over-defensiveness on the basis of the trauma of those presumed childhood taunts. A few months after this all began, without ever again speaking directly, he literally _fired_ me as his patient for my persistence, by certified mail. "Dr. Spaceman" (as we'll call him here) informed me of the necessity to "terminate our professional relationship" because I had been "inappropriate" to his staff.  Persistence is inappropriateness, I guess? He went on to make several verifiably false statements about trying to contact me and other matters, all clearly meant to cover his ass. No doubt he believed he could lie about anything, because who'd believe a mental patient, right? So here's a psychiatrist, bound by Hippocratic oath, abandoning a patient who came to see him for depression in part related to feelings of abandonment. Subsequently I involved the office manager, who at first seemed understanding and even sympathetic. He made a lot of credible promises to help resolve what I inexplicably still felt was a legitimate misunderstanding. But then he dropped the ball repeatedly, too. I suspect he was terrorized by Dr. Spaceman into thinking if they admitted anything, I might sue them for malpractice. Since we were now into the era of the plague, I cut him some more slack, for well over a month, before following up again. (Luckily I still had refills for my depression meds and could get some more from my primary.) At one point, about a month ago, he asked if I wanted to see another provider at HVCC. I agreed, even though he'd made it clear (by declining to refer to it any more) that he would cowardly pretend the original issue out of existence. Then again radio silence. A week ago, I followed up yet again. This time said office manager asked if I would be willing to accept a telehealth visit. I agreed. The next day, he informed me that a nurse practitioner had availability, and that he'd "be in touch" later that day. Nothing. Now, Wednesday afternoon, one week later: still a big nothing. Contacting him again would be crazy, right? As other reviewers have noted, there are few - if any other - psychiatric clinics in the Ann Arbor area which will accept insurance and also allow you to have your own outside therapist. So you get what you pay for, which is to say, nothing at all, or maybe that $5 co-pay. If there are other places I can sing this gospel, please let me know. This place should be shut down. Edit: Just over a week after submitting this review, HVCC has called me to set up an appointment, twice! And left voice mail! In 6 months, virtually nothing, now all of a sudden? Not fooled that easily, HVCC. You missed your chance. read more

I have been a patient with HVCC for 4 or 5 years. I have read the negative reviews here and want to write my experience. Expectations are everything. This place is not like going to a private psychologist in a fancy building with a private waiting room. One place I previously went to even had a separate door to leave by, so you wouldn't come face to face with the next client. I don't need that type of place and can't afford it if I did want it. When I aged out of my private insurance and into Medicare, I had a difficult time finding a practitioner I could afford. I tried 2 others before I got to Huron Valley Consultation Center. I feel the practitioner listens and understands my issues. I feel the medications she prescribes have been helpful. Since Covid, we have telephone visits and that suits me just fine. The office staff has always been helpful with me. I recommend HVCC to my friends that are looking for a psychiatric provider. read more

Agree with post below that the running of the office needs a complete overhaul. There is a busy waiting room and the receptionists always ask your name. You can say "I have an appointment at 2:30 with John Schmidt" but they still need you to say your name or give them a paper with it written down. I don't always have something written down so I just tell them. Goodbye privacy. They should have the schedules of the therapists right there. Google calendars, specific software, there are many methods with which to accomplish this Secondly, the front desk, after taking payment, will not notify your therapist that you are there. They need a system to let the therapists know someone is there. It seems very disorganized. They can take a copy of the insurance card, but two weeks later the receptionists computer will still show your old insurance. That being said, I think my therapist is great! Update: June 2019 I was looking at my old reviews and realized this one needed an update. I am switching from 3 to 4 stars (would be 5, but there are still organizational things that could be implemented by management) The receptionist (she may have other duties as well) is fabulous! She has been there for at least 6 months I would say. I honestly don't remember when she got there, but she is pure sunshine and serenity. She always remembers my name and does a great job! Still, there should be a method by which after signing in, the therapist is notified of the client's arrival. So many ways this could be done discretely with a simple red light on the therapists phone or a text...and a plethora of other options. read more

I have been a patient at this office for 5+ years and have had continuous issues with keeping my prescriptions filled. They do not return voicemails or phone calls left with staff. Their main MD refused to call patients back. The rest are residents who have you go through your entire medical history at each appt and insist that you come in every three months. All I want to do is stay on my prescribed medications (which I have been taking for almost a decade) and the office makes it so difficult to do so that I dread every refill. I have been calling for the past two weeks trying to get my most recent refill! What if I was not so vocal an advocate for my own health? What if I was in crisis and could not maintain the vigilance that it takes to get this office to simply DO THEIR JOB? The only reason I still deal with them is 1.) I am limited by my health insurance/job schedule, and 2.) my talk therapist works there and she is amazing. read more

Unless you are really desperate, I would say pass on this group of people. The Psychiatrist I was seeing was ok and I have heard some good things about some other people working there as well, but the secretaries are complete disasters. It has been a nightmare this last week attempting to refill my prescription. I initially talked to one of the staff in person under good faith and got nothing from them after a few days. Then I refilled it on my own through the phone, but I was in the middle of my day so I didn't conveniently have the exact phone number of my pharmacy on them. I did tell them what one and it would of been easy for them to figure out the rest by pulling out a phone or a laptop, but they couldn't bother to take a minute to do that despite my request and sent my prescription to somewhere I lived a while back and will not likely get to anytime this week. I have been off my medication for almost a week due to this. They have just lost a client and I am going back to the U of M Depression Center. read more

Sadly can confirm the dangers of seeking care with this practice, both financially and health-wise. I'm trying to find out how to report what's going on here. Luckily I'm ok but what I've witnessed is dangerous and irresponsible. In my opinion if you are on a medication that could be dangerous to stop suddenly or if you depend on your provider working with insurance in a timely manner then watch out. This practice, notably Meriam Sam, CNP, may leave you without medication, without notice, and or unexpectedly financially responsible because they failed to complete necessary tasks they had taken responsibility for. Is it worth it to you to risk all that? Are you ok with appointments suddenly being cancelled without notice or explanation with no one to reach for answers? Are you haply to pay for medications that should have been covered by insurance when the provider fails to do their job? If so, go ahead, and hope that you're never in a situation requiring professionalism on their part. read more

The administrative help and the doctors are almost 100% unreachable. You cannot get scripts refilled or make appointments without a lot of trouble. Do not go here. read more

Very hard to get good help. My prescriber does what she can but is only in a few days a week. Unless she is there to tell me to make an appointment it is almost impossible to get in. Staff is very rude and does not accommodate. bare minimum effort is out in here. read more
