Frank helped me on a neck collar repair the other day. I was impressed by his ability to multi-task with other customers in the shop. He showed me how to do it and had a collar in stock. I took the PADI open water scuba course here, it was great! Our instructor Chris was top notch, thorough but to the point. It's an incredible amount of information and tasks to complete in the time that we had, and he kept us to the schedule and got it done. More than just getting it done, he took the time to give each student one on one time, and addressed all questions and concerns. There was lots of additional help that was there for safety and for basic instruction as well. Kevin, other Chris to name a couple were awesome and very helpful. If you tend to be a bit on the cold side, definitely recommend a thick wetsuit for the pool because it can be a little chilly in there. Overall the class was a blast, and so much fun to do with friends as well. 10/10 would recommend! I can't wait to do my open water! read more

Today I went to get my gear for my beginner SCUBA diving class. James, the associate who helped me, was incredibly knowledgable about all the gear he showed me. We discussed what kind of diving I wanted to be doing and he helped me pick out the gear that was best suited for my goals. It was really laid-back and stress free. The shop is doing a good job of following Covid best safety practices. The thing that REALLY impressed me was that I was able to get a PRESCRIPTION diving mask on-site that I was able to take home with my same day. I was SO HAPPY about that. I am a novice, and I came here to learn about snorkeling gear and support a local business. I had a good experience on my first visit, but the salesman failed to point out that there are no returns--a complete departure from most establishments. That afternoon, I decided that the gear they sold me was too high-end for my needs. The next day that they were open, I went back as I wanted to return the untouched, unopened, expensive equipment. It was at this point that I saw on the receipt that they will only make exchanges--but a receipt is too late to communicate a policy like this! When I returned to the store, I was given a very hard time by the man who identified himself as the owner, and I felt intimidated into accepting his "compromise" of a gift card. I was never warned that I would not be able to return the items, and I missed the small posted sign because the salesman was engaging and attentive. Beware of their return policy! read more

As a fat, and out-of-shape, old crazy woman who was WAY over her head (literally and figuratively) I was pretty nervous about taking my first scuba class. I knew I wanted to do it, but I was pretty worried about IF I could do it. This team was amazing. They were SO patient, kind, and fun to learn from. I really struggled with several of the tasks, but each instructor was more than patient and helped me develop skills I didn't even know I had (or could have). They stepped me through many things I was less than sure of. Everyone was encouraging and kind, and the class was exhausting for me but a ton of fun. I am excited about getting certified, and then about future classes with them as I become more skilled and grow into this hobby. I am even more excited about the fact they organize trips for people with different skill levels. I will be on as many of those as I can fit into my schedule (and budget). I can't understand the "1 star" review because I myself have never had any kind of negative experience with any staff at Huron Scuba. Everyone has been fantastic to deal with! In addition to me getting open water certified and 2 Discover Scuba classes, I found the shop setup to be top notch. Their prices are very reasonable and they keep up on any product recalls to insure their customers have the safest working equipment. If you plan to get open water certified this IS THE PLACE. The instructors are amazing! They will take the time to make you that you didn't just complete a certain skill, but that you are comfortable with it before you proceed on. Anyone new to it can ready themselves with a dive ticket for when the snow does melt...or resource up for destinations tropical. I'm an avid paddler, swimmer, and snorkeler and love being in, on, and around any kind of water. I've wanted to get certified in scuba since I was a kid, but for whatever reason never got around to it. This year I decided to finally get my Open Water certification. After doing a bit of online research, I found that Huron Scuba was THE place to get certified. I had been in the shop before to purchase some snorkeling gear and was always given great advice and friendly customer service, so I knew I would get the same treatment during the course. Brian, the shop owner, taught my course along with an assistant instructor Eric. Both were fantastic. Brian clearly cares a lot about diving, and about making sure that his students get the best possible instruction. As with any class, some students are going to pick up on the skills more easily than others, and Brian always made sure that those students who needed another attempt or a little bit of a pep-talk to get through the course got the attention they required. He's also a fountain of knowledge about all things diving, and was able to give me clear answers to all of my questions (and, as an eager student, many of them were of the hair-splitting variety). I peppered him with gear questions throughout my weekend course, and he gave me great advice every single time. As if everything above wasn't enough, Brian only stocks his shop with top-quality gear, and uses that same quality gear in his rentals and his classes. Learning new skills with good gear helps a lot. If you are considering getting certified in scuba, I couldn't recommend a better place to do it than Huron Scuba. The shop is well-stocked, and the employees are wonderful. The owner, however, is difficult to work with. I signed up for a weekend course, got through the Friday evening and Sat. morning coursework, and the Sat. afternoon pool work. I woke up Sunday and could barely move (turns out there were easier ways of getting out of the pool with all that heavy equipment, but no-one told me). Since I missed that Sunday's class, I wanted to make it up another time, but Brian wanted another $100. I tried to explain that I hadn't taken the class, but he decided that I was asking to take it again. At this point I cut my losses and stopped working with Huron Scuba. I walked out of the store due to the attitude of the person behind the counter. He definitely didn't like dealing with people on the particular Saturday that I came in. He suggested that I go to "Sea The World" in Farmington Hills to get my tank filled. I did and I am sorry that I even considered trying any other dive job. Jerry, Chris and Craig trained my wife and I and it was really great to see them again. Craig even did a visual inspection for me, even though I got to the shop 15 minutes before closing. If the person working the day that I came in is typical of the staff at Huron Scuba, I can not recommend this shop to anyone looking for decent customer service. read more

I looked everywhere to find the perfect wetsuit for my swim across the Straits next summer. I didn't want to go online, as fit is everything in a cold, long distance swim. Huron Scuba had a great selection to choose from in a wide variety of sizes. They made sure the fit was correct, and that it suited my needs. All for a VERY reasonable price. Online, I couldn't find a suit for less than 600 bucks. I bought the perfect wetsuit for about 150 at Huron Scuba. Great, friendly, knowledgeable people, too. My wife and I have been diving off and on for 9 years with sometimes 2-3 years of non-diving. We recently made the commitment and after booking a dive to Grand Cayman, we went an bought most of the equipment there (BCDs, wetsuits, regulators, madks, fins, etc....). Brian and his staff were incredibly helpful inselecting the right pieces for each. We did a refrsher course where our instructor was fantastic. This was also through Huron Scuba. We have a trip fast approaching to the Galapagos Islands which includes several days of snorkeling. My wife called and spoke with Missy (owner's wife?) and asked about instruction. We were not available for the next class and the window of opportunity was limited. Within a couple of hours, she called my wife back - she had arranged for an instructor for us in two days. We met at the shop where (another) Missy was extremely helpful getting us fitted with wetsuits, fins and masks, then we were off to a local public indoor pool with instructor, Bart for as long as we needed. From the first call my wife made to the shop, through the fitting and explanations at the shop to the snorkeling training, we could not be more pleased. Every person who worked with us was patient and explained everything in understandable ways with not a single sense of condescension. The whole idea was a bit daunting to us, neither in great shape, neither with any meaningful snorkeling experience and yet, we came away feeling comfortable, competent and not intimidated in the least. Bart was phenomenal - he is a great teacher, patient and always ready with good explanations as to why certain practices are followed, tips for our trip, questions we should be asking, etc. I will say categorically that everyone we encountered from Huron was positive and patient - this isn't a coincidence and to be this consistent, it has to be a tone and expectations set by the owners. This review is about the quality, skill and dedication of Huron Scuba in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This Dive Shop, while rated as one of the best in North America, has some unique qualities I would like to share with you. I have been diving for only 3 years and recently had to opportunity to have Dave Kasper, the owner of Huron Scuba, be my buddy on trip to Indonesia. The diving I experienced with Dave Kasper, was equal to a lifetime of diving under normal diving at best. Dave was using a very expensive underwater camera and 8 of us and 2 divemasters had just barrel rolled into the water. At first everything was OK, and then, at approximately 30 feet, all hell began to break loose. My air was not turned all the way on. I began to have trouble with my primary and thought I would try my backup because my regulator was new for this trip. I had signaled Dave that my air was out and he immediately sprang into action throwing his camera away. Another diver saw the action and grabbed the camera. Dave handed me his primary and instantly everything calmed down. He checked my air and wrote on my slate that my 'your air was off'. I had not checked my air valve before entering the water. I had let a helper on the boat check it. That won't happen again. The most important part of this experience, was Dave Kasper's knowledge and immediate positive reaction to this potential life threatening event. Words alone cannot express the gratitude of having a diver with Dave's experience available in that moment of no air at 37 feet.
