I came across that the men's store and luxe boutique had a very red carpet grand opening party, but a bit disappointed not to receive an invitation given I was told we will be invited, felt like a fool really, knowing we are a longstanding support of this store. It does not erase years of positive experiences, but with all social media buzz, we understand things can pivot, but being remembered as a loyal customer would have meant something. Looking at the insta post, Turnabout's grand opening was full of smiling customers. I understand it's optics and you have to put out a grand opening as the consignment game is saturated, but the old timers like myself who kept the doors open all these years weren't on the list. Come on, you guys can do better. Did we feel special? Nope! Thanks guys. I don't know what customer service is this! Disappointing.

I met the owner of the shop (James) at my work and he told me to stop by his shop and I'm so glad I did! Do yourself a favour and go visit James, I promise you're in for a lovely time! :)

But something piqued my interest when I heard of Community Thrift and Vintage. I knew this one would be different then the rest. Man was I right. One part social enterprise, one part thrift store, all parts awesome, this pretty little boutique is retail-with-a-conscious to the highest order. A firm believer that the "thrift" in "thrift store" should be observed, I was beyond relieved to walk into an unpretentious, well-curated, and cheap(!!) vintage shop. Adhering to my "no uglies" policy, this not-for-profit opts for natural fibres when choosing their wares, and has a strict no polyester rule (thankthelawd). With its reclaimed wood and exposed brick walls, its well-curated wares, and its social advocacy and support of the DTES, Community Thrift could easily upsell cool to the masses. But they don't. And I love them so much more for it.

I think if you're looking for a good selection of gently used unique scarves, this is the place to check out.

Vancouver's vintage and consignment is already notoriously expensive and caters almost exclusively to a small dress size. Community, a Vintage and Consignment that is run by a non-profit Downtown Eastside housing and resource society not only engages with the neighbourhood it lives in, but also works to diversify its size range to engage with shoppers of many sizes. It hires women from the neighbourhood to work in the business and portions of the proceeds go back into the neighbourhood, which feels great while you shop! The space is small but well utilized and well decorated. Great jewelry by local designers is on display and the clothes have a very consistent and curated turnover rate. And the prices!! Compared to Vancouvers vintage scene, Community is absolutely the fairest price I've found yet. These days even Value Village is getting pricey so to go to a shop where the selection is so well picked out and find something affordable feels great. Again, I'm a plus size shopper who finds an amazing score here 90% of the time. Pieces from Community make up probably 50% of my wardrobe. See you there this weekend!
