Love getting Hungry Harvest every week. I used to do a CSA but I switched to this so I could customize what comes in my box!

I have been a Philly foodworks customer for over three years now and it was the best decision I…read morehave ever made. I was in the market for local produce, non gmo and organic. The quality is unmatched and when I say you can taste the difference I mean. I had never tasted carrots as fresh or potato's with so much flavor. Things you don't realize when you are used to big box store imported low quality produce. It's also a huge relief to not have to worry every time there is a new listeria recall on items. This was huge for me during the cucumber and tomato's recalls two summers ago as I was pregnant and would only eat produce from Phillyfoodworks. I also appreciate the variety of other options they provide. The fresh pasta is delicious and Im a huge fan of the chicken sausages. The customer service is also great and very responsive. It's also nice to know you are supporting the community and with it receiving top notch quality items. Lastly they deliver! It is super convenient and just makes life easier.

I really enjoyed getting my produce from Philly Foodworks while living in Philadelphia. I went for…read morethe subscription box and it was almost always full of a variety of perfectly ripe fruits and veggies. Once in a while I would get something that was not as fresh, but it was very rare. Philly Foodworks is unique among csa-type distributors because they have a full online grocery store you can shop from, whether you're getting a produce box or not. I was able to get almost all of my groceries each week from Philly Foodworks with their numerous options. If you shop around, you can find really affordable items as well. Subscriptions for eggs, dairy, and meat offer further discounts. In general, I ended up spending as much, or a tad less, than I would for the same items from an actual grocery store. I only ever shopped online, but I believe they also have a store front you can go to if that option is better for you. They deliver right to your doorstep for a small fee and the actual process of getting groceries/subscriptions was always a breeze. The quality of the food cannot be overstated. Once you go direct from the farm, it's hard to go back to the tasteless big-box grocery store produce. The eggs and milk were also amazing, as was the beef. Last but not least, they're a great organization with increasing access, sustainability, and regenerative farming practices at the root of everything they do.

This is our second year of purchasing a share from Pennypack's CSA and we have yet to be…read moredisappointed. The quality of the produce is excellent and the thought and care put into the farm is unmatched. While they are not certified organic, they practice natural, practical, and ecologically sound and sustainable farming. They have a lot of signage posted throughout the farm (as part of their education program) that explains how and why things are they way they are at the farm. They also have a boatload of dedicated volunteers and workers who keep everything running efficiently. They are happy to answer questions about the farm, the food, and often have ideas about what to do with everything. We purchased the small share and that entitles us to 6 items chosen by us from the options available that day. Last night we chose a pound of carrots, a head of lettuce, two pounds of summer squash, beets, swiss chard, and two pounds of cucumbers. Other items available include kale, bok choy, scallions, and broccoli as well as pick your own string beans and raspberries. They have an extensive herb garden where you can pick your own herbs for cooking that week. Finally, you can cut a bunch of flowers to take with you each week as a part of your share as well. This year we split our share with another family, so we go every other week for our pick up -- as a family of just two, this works out well for us! While the benefits are many (supporting local agriculture, eating local, sustainable food, health, getting outside in a garden), the CSA is a little bit of work. Each share requires a few hours of volunteer work be completed at the farm. Furthermore, when you get home with your pile of veggies, you need to clean and prep them as well as figure out recipes. They leave the vegetables generally intact with the greens and such on top. It turns out you can and should use those parts of the vegetables as well, but if you're a novice (like us) it takes some research and planning to figure out what to do with things like carrot tops and beet and turnip greens. Even though it's a lot of work, it's a fun learning experience and would definitely be a worthwhile activity to get the kids involved with. Check out their website early in the new year for information about signing up for a share -- they go fast!

Usually I end up with a bunch of veggies I can't use, but at Pennypack, I get to choose what we take home. There are also many "freebies" each week because the farm is so prolific! Living Hope CSA is great because they have a close drop off location to my house, and I like supporting local farms which provide us weekly fresh organic produce free of fertilizers and pesticides. The vegetables (and fruit such as tomatoes) are DELICIOUS, but I think other CSAs give more produce each week. (We compared what we got to what our friends get from other CSAs that also do 6 items for a small share.) At one point during the summer, Living Hope CSA did email all its members to say sorry about the quality of vegetables since the weather has been hot, but I think it would have been nice if they offered credit back or a discount for future farm shares. One thing I like about this CSA is that you can pick from a list of what you will be receiving each week. (The other CSA I am comparing to does not let you pick each week.) Unfortunately, by giving the option of choice, sometimes they run out of the popular items and you get a random item instead. That's okay, but sometimes you will receive out of season vegetables. For example, I received potatoes in the middle of summer (tiny potatoes in a tiny portion). I did order potatoes later in the fall though, and they were great. Save the cool season vegetables for the cool season!

The property is…read moreabsolutely beautiful, with plenty of friendly farm animals to see -- perfect for kids or just a relaxing day out. There was a long line for ice cream, but it moved quickly, so the wait wasn't bad at all. You can't see the ice cream behind the counter, so you have to go by the menu board (and samples). I tried the cookies and cream, chocolate, and chocolate with peanut butter cups -- all were incredibly creamy and full of flavor. It's 10x better than anything store-bought! There's also plenty of seating both inside and out on the porch, which made it easy to sit back and enjoy the treat. Can't wait to come back and try more flavors!

They were out of the tiramisu by the time it was our turn in line - warning: lines are long on weekends, especially when it's nice out, so it'll take a while. I tried the rose flavor, peanut butter fudge, and harvest cheesecake. I wasn't actually a huge fan of the cheesecake but did really like the other two. The actual pumpkin patch is nice and we got to pick several pumpkins of our own. If you're not interested in picking them yourself, there are plenty already plucked off the vine and lining the path there, as well as on display, that you could buy instead. Small Pumpkins were $3, medium were $5, and there were two more sizes after that. The tiny ones are $1 each and on a display when you enter. There is apple cider and honey for sale as well. The corn maze is meant more for kids and was a quick walk through for us.
