I hate I don't have better things to say about this spot that we were really excited to try. I will…read moresay that upon arrival, everything seemed to be going fine. The owner greeted us at the door, it was fairly empty so there was no wait and we were seated right away. The ambiance is nice. It does look like you've stepped into the VIP area of a restaurant, so it was cute -- not fancy, but cute. The owner then told us about the restaurant being inspired by his mother, they've been around for 10 years, explained the menu etc., it was nice. He also told us that he hadn't been to Jamaica since a kid and that raised an eyebrow -- but we let it go because he wasn't the cook. MIND YOU, I brought my cousin here (who is Jamaican) after seeing decent reviews about it. He brought over our first round of drinks and they were really good. We really enjoyed them. They weren't strong at all, tasted like juice. So I would recommend just getting juice instead of the +$5 to add rum. As we began to order and look at the menu, the prices were really HIGH, but I guess he was going for upscale cuisine -- so we said OK, let's see what this entails. We all ordered the Taste of the Island plater that gave an oxtail, curry goat and jerk chicken, rice and peas, plaintains and a tiny side salad. I wasn't mad at the portions given, but the flavor didn't hit the mark at all. NOW LETS GET INTO THE FOOD The Jerk Chicken was OVERLY spicy; we couldn't even enjoy the flavor. The oxtails were fatty, sweet and BLACK. Not enjoyable at all. The goat was OK, but not very flavorful in my opinion. The beef patties were good, but probably out of a box. The Roti was good and the oxtail dipping sauce was good. The Honey BBQ Wings were pretty good and cooked well. The Mac'n'Cheese -- DO NOT GET THIS. It literally has NO taste and reminded me of the cup mac'n'cheese that you put the powder cheese in. It took so long to bring it out, I guess he kept forgetting about it (they said everything is made to order) -- which, IDK how you make mac'n'cheese to order. Real cooks know, Mac n cheese is NOT a 5-minute made to order meal. He also didn't ask how we enjoyed the meal -- which I felt like he knew what we knew when he saw that not only did the other table leave a plate full of food (the meats) but our plates resembled the same -- he still collected his coin. There is a 20% gratuity that is added on at the end that is ridiculous considering the prices are already so expensive -- MIND YOU, it is not "Elevate Cuisine", its basic Jamaican dishes on Ikea plates. No special plating, no unique sauces or display, no chef's plating or anything. Just a plate of food. Everyone's bill came in over $100. The table nearby us order the same thing and inquired whether or not we liked our food, but we'd just gotten our food and hadn't tried it yet -- we did warn them about the chicken being spicy, but not everything else. They came after us and left before us and left everything on the plate except the rice and peas. I love black owned businesses and I wish this much more success, but I would NOT recommend it to anyone that is looking for authentic Jamaican food.

Thankfully, I went a few hours after they opened so they were fully stocked with patties. I ordered one of each - curry chicken, spinach, veggie, and beef. I placed an order for a large oxtail dinner, large jerk chicken, and medium brown stew chicken meal. Each meal comes with rice and peas, cabbage, and plantains. I also asked for extra gravy on the rice. I waited for about 10 minutes and received my hefty order. My dad had the oxtails, and said he wish he had more oxtails in the dinner as there was only 4 or 5. However they were on the larger size in comparison to other Jamaican spots. My mom loved the spice on the Jerk chicken as did I. It had that kick you expect and needed. My brown stew chicken was very good. The chicken was tender and the browning sauce was really good especially with the rice and peas. We did all say we wish there was more peas within the rice. The patties were fresh and I had both the spinach and curry chicken. The curry had a kick and was very savory. It made me want to order their curry chicken meal the next time I stop in. Also, did I mention they give you ALOT of food, so you will have plenty of leftovers.

I got brown stew tofu with steamed cabbage, rice and peas, and plantains. My brother got brown stew chicken with Mac and cheese and rice and peas. I also got passion fruit and ginger juice. We both enjoyed our meals, and I had enough to take home as a snack for later. I liked that the tofu had a sear on it, but did not have a thick coating or anything. This made it a good texture for reheating to eat later. This is a casual spot, I would meet friends here or take food to go.

Mehhh!!! Considering that home (Southern California) has plenty of good Caribbean/Jamaican food…read moreplaces to choose from, this place did not hit! My honey found this place online while visiting Tampa. Eight of us got there to find out it is take-out only. How disappointing! We walked into the small hole in the wall, only to be treated like 2nd class citizens by the guy taking orders. He was NOT friendly at all! No greeting, no explanation of menu items, nothing. We should've taken that as a clue and bounced. As for food, plates are plentiful. My curry chicken was tender with lots of gravy. I wished it had potatoes and carrots as I like at home so that sucked. Rice and peas were soft. Cabbage was well seasoned, but the portion was small. When I asked the guy what side options I could choose from, he told me the plate included macaroni and cheese (super nasty attitude). After that unpleasantry, they had the audacity to leave the mac & cheese off of my plate. Additional cabbage would've been nice, at least! Others enjoyed the oxtails, jerk chicken, and wings. Everyone's mac & cheese looked stale and hard and all of them said it was awful. The plates included cornbread which I do not eat. Another bummer: no plantain or festival bread, my 2 fav's. I don't know what time of Jamaican food is in Tampa, but it is hands down subpar compared to what I'm used to at home. This place also needs a full gut job b:c it looks like the health dept will shut it down at any moment. lol

Pivoted to the whole fried snapper. Was told about 8 minutes on the snapper. 15 minutes later, Im still waiting. They fix all your sides and then wait on the protein if it's not something that's pre-cooked. So my sides (mac & cheese/collards) were sitting for about 20 minutes before my snapper was cooked. The young lady at the register reassured me that the food is kept under a warmer in the kitchen while waiting on a protein. The warmer must be broken because it was lukewarm. As anticipated after sitting for 20+ minutes. A young lady that ordered about 4-5 people behind me got fried whole catfish. They were able to fry her catfish before my snapper. As someone that cooks Im not quite sure on the difference in cook/prep but here we are. She's out the door with her catfish. And Im STILL waiting on my snapper. 25 minutes and counting. And my sides are still sitting. Got my snapper and it was overcooked; dry, not flaky/moist as fish should be when cooked correctly. It seems the people of Tampa are desperate for soul food. Cause this ain't it.
