Upon bib pickup I learned that the rescue mission accepts donations, offers housing assistance, basic needs assistance and health services to at risk and homeless individuals and their families in Orange County. This review is specifically for the large group of board and care homes, known as The Cottages,…read morethat ALZ OC owns and operates. In early 2021, ALZ OC took over the board and care home in which my frail, medically fragile mother receives her dementia and hospice care. Unfortunately, my experience with them has been one of almost continuous frustration and disappointment. I have done absolutely everything I can to establish clear communication with the program administrators, and to accommodate their "growing pains," but after almost an entire year, it is my opinion that ALZ OC has proven to be incapable of managing this house with the safety and comfort of it's residents at the forefront, which is what families like mine pay them several thousand dollars a month to do. Because of near constant staffing shortages and inconsistencies; documentation failures and errors; poorly managed behavioral issues with other residents, and sub-standard facility maintenance, I feel a responsibility to leave a review of my terrible experience with ALZ OC so that other families, who are already overwhelmed with the daily needs of their loved one with dementia, don't make their lives more difficult by looking to the current iteration of The Alzheimer's Association in Orange County for help. I hope this review encourages the leadership of ALZ OC to overhaul the protocol and management of these homes, but it is my understanding that the organization continues to acquire new homes that they do not have the capacity to manage appropriately. It's disheartening that they would risk the reputation of a beloved charity like The Alzheimer's Association for what appears to be reckless, careless, profit driven market expansion.

Now I just make sure to keep these aside from my Salvation Army donations because I think WW's cause of helping people get back on their feet and feel confidently dressed and accessorized for their interviews is so worthy. I have dropped off boxes of jewelry sets as well. They take shoes, purses, laptop bags, brief cases along with clothing! Make sure to check out their donation hours and you can just pull up and drop off. They also have drop off times on Saturdays! They recently had to deal with a devastating fire, so they could really use your help to restock. And it's all tax deductable, ask for a receipt!

Part II of Sidney Writes About Doing Good The Roger Kiser quote completely devastated me the first time that I read it. And I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried. It crystallized for me everything I felt growing up...everything that I wanted in this life. I grew up in a broken home...never knew my Father...my mom was a struggling single mom with two kids. She worked full time, and then being a child of the 60's, partied like that was her second full time job. I knew with my son, that I had to be 100% different...that even though my relationship did not work out, he would always know the unconditional love and support that I never had. He is indeed lucky that he has two parents that love and adore him very much. It also explains why I feel so strongly that everyone needs to give back to their community. This whole nonsense of "I Built That" is just that: nonsense. So much of one's success is nothing more than an accident of birth (not that enough people get that). I always want to ask the typical OC preening peacock: What if you were born a slave? Or a Chinese peasant? Or a woman in the Dark Ages? Or in the middle of the Somalian or Congo Civil War? How magnificent would you be then? It is what I try and teach my son especially since he is growing up in the bubble of the OC with no real wants or needs unmet. He got lucky with two loving parents who adore him and who have the financial resources to take care of him. Corazon de Vida Foundation supports a dozens orphanages in Baja California. Per the website: "As some background, Mexico does not have a foster care system to support children in need due to neglect, abuse, or abandonment. There is no welfare system to help families with a single parent that is unable to provide for their children. So, the only way to support families and children in need is through a network of orphanages. At last count, there are approximately 50 orphanages in Baja California, Mexico. Most are located close to the border because most of their support comes from the US." They run several trips a month to the homes where individuals or groups can visit the children (and play and interact) or do needed service. You can also sponsor a child, donate online, host a party or make a difference in a variety of other ways. Now, many of my Yelp friends enjoy Sababa in Long Beach. I have spent time reading through the reviews for Girls of Dog Rescue, and I am honestly…read moredisappointed by the one-star reviews left by people who were denied adoption due to the rescue's clearly stated rules. Shame on anyone who tries to damage a rescue organization simply because they couldn't accept that they didn't meet the adoption requirements. These rules are in place for one reason: the safety and lifelong well-being of the dogs. Girls of Dog Rescue is strict because they care. They limit adoptions by location so they can conduct proper home visits and ensure each dog is placed in a safe, stable environment. That level of responsibility should be applauded, not criticized. People also forget that rescues are not free to operate. Vet bills, spay/neuter surgeries, medications, vaccinations, food, and rehabilitation for neglected dogs all cost money. Expecting a rescued dog to be "free" ignores the reality of what these organizations take on to save lives. I also appreciate that this rescue requires their dogs to be seen by their designated veterinarian until the dogs reach a certain age. This ensures the dogs receive proper medical care and are spayed or neutered, rather than relying on promises that may never be kept. To those leaving one-star reviews because you were denied: this isn't personal -- it's responsible rescue work. To Girls of Dog Rescue: thank you for putting the dogs first, even when it's unpopular. The glowing, five-star reviews from successful adopters clearly speak louder than the complaints from those who didn't qualify.

After recently losing my beloved Yorkie of 9 years, my husband and I decided to honor her memory by…read morerescuing rather than purchasing from a breeder. We came across an adorable Shih Tzu pair (a brother and sister) and submitted an application expressing interest in one of them. Within seconds of submitting, I received a call. The representative hadn't read my application at all. When she asked if I currently had a dog and I explained mine had just passed, there was zero acknowledgment; no condolences, nothing. She then informed me it was "unethical" to adopt just one puppy and that I'd need to take both. When I agreed to take both, she reversed course, saying the siblings would "fight" and I couldn't take them together. When I offered to adopt two unrelated dogs instead, the story changed again; apparently a doctor had just been approved for the dog I applied for, mid-conversation, and I was redirected to a one-year-old Yorkie before being abruptly dismissed. The inconsistencies were glaring, the policies shifted in real time, and the entire interaction was handled without a shred of compassion. I am a registered nurse and my husband works in the entertainment industry; we are experienced, attentive pet owners who gave our Yorkie an exceptional life. None of that was considered because my application was never actually reviewed. This experience is precisely why so many people turn to breeders and pet stores instead of rescues. When grieving applicants are met with dismissiveness, fabricated barriers, and contradictory excuses, it doesn't serve the animals; it leaves them in shelters longer. I hope the organization takes a hard look at how their team communicates with prospective adopters.
