She and her team took great care of me every time I went in. Thanks to her, I have normal looking toes again! Soo happy to finally wear sandals again and not be embarrassed to go to the nail shop. My insurance company, UCLA Medicare Advantage Prestige Program identified Dr. Michael Avakian as…read morethe appropriate podiatrist to treat my feet (multiple broken toes) because I have bone cancer. He has stellar reviews. And I immediately understood why: he came himself to let me in the side gate next to the handicapped spot. He was surprised to see me with only one shoe. I explained that the pain was so severe that I could not get a shoe on my left foot and was wearing a Bomba sock instead. But from the moment I encountered the staff my " appointment " for which I had waited THREE WEEKS was a travesty. They had no record of my appointment (which had been made directly by my insurance company) nor could they find the materials I had texted to the office at their instruction 3 weeks earlier. It turns out, after a very unpleasant exchange that I had " texted " to their email address. They did, in fact, have it. Calls were made to the Medical group at UCLA (not the people who could help me) and finally I myself called the line reserved for Prestige plan patients (we pay a modest fee to the medical group to have help navigating the complex health system). Without reviewing my extensive records the representative (Brittany) could not help me immediately. I asked for a supervisor (Patricia) who for obvious reasons was apologetic but also unable to help. Since the staff had treated me like a criminal in the office--no appointment, no insurance, no right to be there (could it have been that they assumed only a homeless person would walk around with one shoe and one sock) I decided to leave and call my insurance company from home. Dr. Avakian, who had heard the entire saga from his office, followed me out to the street to apologize. He seems like a kind and competent man. But his staff is rude and careless. At home I was able to reach my regular navigator, Andrea, but my appointment in Westwood is not until January 2! By then my ties will either have healed or dropped off. This is the fault of modern healthcare not Dr. Avakian. His staff is a serious obstacle to getting appropriate treatment, but I am confident that if you can tolerate their rudeness your reward will be a capable and thoughtful podiatrist.

Anyway, the good doctor was able to remove the glass without any local anesthesia, and the pain stopped! I was in the examination room with her, and asked other questions related to podiatry and the fitness of shoes. He explained the purpose of shoes and had a nice skeletal model of the foot and how it is supposed to flex. While being flatfooted, it seems the foot has to work extra-hard and that is the reason for early pain while walking. He is a patient Doctor with a nice small practice which we both feel comfortable in. He is close to home and on Fairoaks, close to Old Town, allowing another reason to stop for breakfast or lunch, as he has mornings for patients. I would recommend this Doctor for any minor foot operations, and as always get a second opinion.

I also have to give a shout out to Rosio and Cindy who work closely with Dr. Upshaw...their compassion and professionalism also gave me hope that one day my feet would be well enough to travel. If you care about your health and well being, do not come to a place that practices mill medicine,…read morecontrary to the standard of care. Multiple rushed and poor experiences here with several physicians. Most of your face time here is with physician assistants. When a doctor experiences significant tactile resistance during an injection and openly admits a lesion isn't behaving like a typical cyst, shifting to a passive "wait-and-see" approach without looking at your historical imaging is simply a contradiction in clinical logic. Calling that out isn't about being confrontational; it is about recognizing that your intuition was right, your questions are valid. Dr. Billings operates a medical mill. I came to see Dr Billings (incidentally CEO of Pasadena Orthopedics) for a thumb lesion xrayed 5 years ago and never biopsied. She injected my thumb without so much as objectively establishing if the lesion was solid or cystic. She told me with utmost confidence that I have a cyst. She suddenly revised her diagnosis while in the midst of obviously struggling to inject the lesion with steroids. She wanted to move fast because volume means Benjamins $. I walked in with little to no pain, and walked out unable to fully flex or extend my thumb without pain. The office then gave me the run around for a simple imaging request after the pain progressively worsened and insinuated that the response to my injection in 6 weeks is "diagnostic." No rationale was offered. Billings tried to pivot with, "let's see if we get a treatment response." Truth is, she realized unnecessary needle trauma would have to be healed from forcefully trying to inject steroids (liquid) in something with the density of an eraser (before imaging could become meaningful). I offered to show them prior imaging, but they were too busy churning out patients. I came here for diagnostic clarity, not to sit around for 2 hours and be provided substandard care. The audacity of trying to pass it off as, "let's wait to see if the treatment responds" (damn well knowing it's not behaving like a cyst and forcing fluid in a solid mass in a patient's thumb). Come on now.

During the appointment, the salesperson was very friendly and spent a considerable amount of time measuring my feet and explaining how these products would improve my condition. Based on that presentation, I purchased: Classic Arch Support - $449.99 Deluxe Leather Support - $489.99 Two Super Athletic Antimicrobial Inserts - $49.98 Two Arch Activators - $39.98 Lock Laces - $9.99 Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23 shoes - $130.00 After wearing these products for two years, I can honestly say they did not provide the benefits I was led to expect. Looking back, I feel the fitting process gave the impression that the supports were custom-made or uniquely tailored to my feet. However, I later realized these appear to be standard, mass-produced arch supports rather than truly customized medical devices. Similar over-the-counter arch supports are available online for a fraction of the price. I want to be clear that my complaint is not about the salesperson. She was courteous, patient, and professional throughout the appointment. My disappointment is with the company's marketing and pricing. I feel I paid a premium for products that did not deliver results that justified the cost. If you're considering purchasing from The Good Feet Store, I encourage you to research all of your options first, including much less expensive over-the-counter arch supports. I wish I had done more comparison shopping before spending nearly $1,300. Unfortunately, I feel this was a very expensive lesson, and I would not make the same purchase again.
